In Retrospect of 2011 (Part 2)
Continuing my 2011 retrospect in photos..
(3) The 13th Tour of the Fireflies
Since Team CB is known for engaging FUN in everything we do, we decided to join this one-of-a-kind annual-bike-for-a-cause, also being true to our motto that “we RUN and everything else we CAN!”. I was fortunate to be part of this very unique event, because for one, I don’t even own a bike so I’m very thankful that my team mate, Enrico, allowed me to use his bike and experience this different kind of adrenaline rush. A full marathon distance except that we bike instead of running from Tiendesitas going to CCP and back to Tiendesitas. Hopefully I get to join this fun event again this 2012.
(4) Holy Weekend, The Runner’s Way
A sort-of semi-regular activity for me during Holy Week is going to different churches not only here in Metro Manila but nearby provinces as well. Holy Week in 2011 is a different experience for me, well, I was invited to join the Snail Runners Alabang’s Visita Iglesia Run last Maundy Thursday. A first for me since what I’ve done in the past years was do it the conventional way, with transportation or by commuting, but this time, we visited each church by running. Started 12 midnight of Holy Wednesday from Alabang Town Center then stopped at Mendiola around 9 in the morning which was approximately around 40 kms. Then the same Maundy Thursday night, I joined Team CB in our 21 km ‘alay lakad’ from Tiendesitas to Antipolo Cathedral.

I know it’s kinda late to do a year-end post for the past year, imagine it’s been 19 days over and now is the only time I got for such thing. Well, I’m doing this because I want to have a reminder how the past 365 days shaped me as a person. If I could categorize the 5 past years of my life it would be this: “2007 was a self-discovery year, an 11-month sojourn somewhere in the Middle East where I tried to find myself as an individual; 2008 was a homecoming year of sorts, going back to my native land and returning to the second family I belonged to before going into self-discovery mode; 2009 was a banner year for local traveling, the year I got serious into the active lifestyle called running; 2010 was a banner year for adventurism where fun runs became half marathons and local traveling became international.”
For 2011, I can call it as a “pushing the limits” year. It may seem that my whole year just revolved around running and traveling, two things which I’m very passionate about in my life now.
So here are the events which I think made my 2011 memorable and significant, mostly shown in pictures:
(1) 1st Mayon 360 50-Miler Race
My first attempt on running an ultra marathon distance (distances over a full marathon), what better way to do it but run around the scenic Mayon volcano on foot. This was the first time that an event of such was held, coinciding with the Magayon Festival in the province of Albay last April 2011. Quite a very tall order as I was leaping from running the usual 42.195 kms to an 81-km foot race. I couldn’t have imagine myself circumnavigating Mount Mayon on foot. Proud to have been part of the first batch of runners who circumnavigated Mt. Mayon on foot with a finish time of 12 hours and 54 minutes and finisher # 35. If I could have the chance to run this race again, I would. Hopefully next time, I get to run and complete the entire course faster.
(2) 1st Bataan Death March 160 Ultra Marathon
Nope, I did not run that, and until now I haven’t even have to guts to think of running that race. It was a significant event for me because I was part of the support crew of the first ever longest foot race in the country, a 160-km road race just so you know. And what made it more special is the fact that the runner I was supporting for became the first champion of this race. Driving from km 0 in Mariveles, Bataan until the finish line in Capas, Tarlac, thus the title I called myself from thereon, “the ultra driver”. It was Feb 26-27, a date when Wilnar Iglesia etched his name in history as the first champion of BDM 160. Come January 28-29 (next weekend) new BDM 160 warriors will be having their date with history as the 2nd BDM 160 Ultra Marathon happens.
