Build 3

I know it has been a while since I posted well I now have some progress to report.

I served my time worshipping at the alter of the prince of darkness (Joseph Lucas) when I had an old ES2 Norton and the Ducati I owned was an electrical nightmare as well but that is nothing compared to trying to work out a modern wiring Loom , especially when you need to remove some circuits for redundant systems ,like air-conditioning, power steering ,Wipers or heater fans ect.

To avoid having to have a slip ring and contact for a horn push in the centre of the steering wheel I have taken the wiper switch from the Lite Ace which had a nice pushbutton on the end intended to work the washer. It is now a perfect horn button that is adjustable into four positions. This replaces the Nissan wiper control, redundant as I am not going to have a screen and need neither wipers or washers .having settled on the position of the instrument pannel I took the plunge and cut a suitable hole in the alloy dash panel carefully shaping the edges you will also notice that another opening is marked below which will allow fitment of ,the hazard flasher switch , the instrument dimmer switch and the cigerette lighter , not that I am a smoker but it will be handy as an accessory power outlet. The fuel Tank is now finished It is fashioned from a piece of 150mm ally tube and although It won’t hold a huge amount of fuel (13 litres) it will still give me a range of at least 200 km and there will be room to carry an extra fuel can in the boot .Any way as nice as I think my seats are they will not be lounge chairs so I somehow think that the range will not be an issue.

One important tip for anyone contemplating working on any of the electrical systems in your car and that is to solder all joints I have long believed that the crimp connectors are in league with The prince of darkness (Joe Lucas) to ensure that we end up stranded with a mysterious electrical problem……
Any way I think I have a handle on the whole thing now apart from the start circuit not working and engine oil and coolant lights that are on all of the time. The start problem seems to have a great deal to do with the fact that the cut out switch which is essential to prevent the car from being started in gear was on the transmission itself rather than the gear selector. so once I work out which are the correct wires one of two particular multipin plugs I can connect them to the switch on my trimatic . And then Vroom Vroom noises should be the result.

I have had a few distractions of late and as a consequence I have not spent as much time working on the car . But in the last few days I have managed to get some things done . I still have not been able to make any progress with actually waking up the engine or finding out why the dash lights are on all of the time. Firstly I have finally sorted out the fuel line plumbing and what a nightmare it is compared to an old car .A feed, return and a vapour line are bundled trough the transmission tunnel and Of course I had not marked which was what. Connecting my battery tyre pump sorted that then I had to extend the vapour line from the manifold to the charcoal canister a piece of brake line salvaged from my engine donor did the trick there . While I was at it I made a hard vacuum line to connect from the vacuum kick down on the transmission to the manifold .Fortunately there is a, now redundant vacuum line that was connected to the power steering that will now serve the transmission actuator. One thing that I am counting as a success is the boot lid that I have made .Using my favourite material, aluminium check plate, I have a workable lid which uses some piano hinge and two covers for each side. I plan to use the same sort of over centre catches that most people use for their bonnets to hold this down and I’m watching a pair on Ebay UK at present . A floor is one thing but as yet I still have not made a for the boot but I don’t think that that is something that is not a top priority part of the project, in fact it can wait until I have the car finished

My middle brake light has come together very well and uses the original lens from the Nissan.I was going to use the whole light assembly but now I think that I shall just use the bulb holder and the lens which should satisfy the ADR s .
IT”S ALIVE !!!!!I have finally got my car going, but it cost a lot of money and quite bit of heart ache but at this point in time I just do not care I am just so happy to be able to go to the car turn the key and hear VROOM VROOM ….Bye for now the workshop beckons
