Derek Wilmott (since 2024)

Derek is a recent transยญplant from Clemson, South Carolina to the Toledo area. He moved to Toledo in fall 2021 to work as the Acquisition & Collection Management Librarian at the University of Toledo Libraries. Derek grew up along the southยญern borยญder of New Mexico. He gradยญuยญatยญed from New Mexico State University in the earยญly 1990s, douยญble majorยญing in Criminal Justice and Psychology. He then moved to South Carolina, marยญried, gradยญuยญatยญed with a Master of Library & Information Science, and then worked for many more years as a proยญfesยญsor in libraries at both the University of South Carolina and Clemson University before evenยญtuยญalยญly comยญing north to his present home in Toledo.
He was nurยญtured in a famยญiยญly that valยญued intelยญlecยญtuยญal curiosยญiยญty, free thought, and a healthy dose of skepยญtiยญcism. His father was raised as Southern Baptist and latยญer became an atheยญist while servยญing a tour durยญing the Vietnam War in the late 1960s (thereยญby disยญprovยญing the myth that there are โno atheยญists in a foxยญhole,โ and his mothยญer, who raised Derek and his brothยญers in the Roman Catholic traยญdiยญtion. During Derekโs high school years, he began to quesยญtion much of the Catholic dogยญma and over time he evenยญtuยญalยญly abanยญdoned any reliยญgious beliefs whatยญsoยญevยญer. Through many years of methodยญiยญcal inquiries, he evenยญtuยญalยญly disยญcovยญered the philosoยญphies and prinยญciยญples of Atheism and Secular Humanism to best repยญreยญsent his world views. He evenยญtuยญalยญly became a memยญber of the American Humanist Association. Derek joined his local chapยญter of AHA, the Secular Humanist Foothills of South Carolina in the mid-2010s, and then evenยญtuยญalยญly moved to Toledo where he found a vibrant comยญmuยญniยญty and home with the Secular Humanists of Western Lake Erie. He curยญrentยญly serves as a memยญber of the Board for 2024โ2025.
His research interยญests include how to develยญop library colยญlecยญtions that empowยญer and uplift underยญrepยญreยญsentยญed voicยญes in the acquiยญsiยญtion and retenยญtion of library resources; and researchยญing pathยญways to recruit and menยญtor a genยญerยญaยญtion of BIPOC librarยญiยญans into the proยญfesยญsion to mirยญror the comยญmuยญniยญties they serve. In his off time, he likes to play boardgames, lisยญten to Classical and Rock music, visยญit museยญums and parks, and read hisยญtoยญry, polยญiยญtics, and curยญrent events.
Anne Epstein (since 2024)

I joined the Secular Humanists of Western Lake Erie in an effort to find like-minded indiยญvidยญuยญals who believed in helpยญing felยญlow human beings withยญout the need for reliยญgious docยญtrine and poliยญcies. Having grown up in a houseยญhold where orgaยญnized reliยญgion was eschewed, I despair at seeยญing the growยญing influยญence and weaponizaยญtion of reliยญgion in sociยญety today. Increasingly restricยญtive poliยญcies based on reliยญgion have creยญatยญed a sysยญtem where diviยญsion becomes furยญther entrenched rather than everyยญone being treatยญed with digยญniยญty and respect. Since I joined, I have had an opporยญtuยญniยญty to learn about the many difยญfiยญculยญties affectยญing sociยญety includยญing polยญluยญtion, curยญtailยญing of reproยญducยญtive and civยญil rights, harm reducยญtion and poverยญty. I have also been introยญduced to the orgaยญniยญzaยญtions which address these issues and the serยญvices they proยญvide. As a SHoWLE memยญber, I hope to conยญtinยญue learnยญing about the strugยญgles humanยญiยญty faces and the remeยญdies offered through volยญunยญteer work.
Since I was in colยญlege, I have been interยญestยญed in the issues facยญing women includยญing lack of access to eduยญcaยญtion, healthยญcare and employยญment opporยญtuยญniยญties. A recent online course I took offered by Stanford, examยญined these issues as well as the comยญmon plights of gender-based vioยญlence, sex-trafficking and poverยญty in old age. Due to this interยญest, I hope to one day take coursยญes in human rights offered by the City University of New York. As an American, I feel I have an obligยญaยญtion to learn about those less forยญtuยญnate across the globe and offer my serยญvices either in the form of volยญunยญteer work or charยญiยญtaยญble donaยญtions. I believe SHoWLE, on a local levยญel, will be benยญeยญfiยญcial to furยญtherยญing this goal.
Aside from the usuยญal colยญlecยญtion of dead-end retail jobs in colยญlege, I have twenยญty yearsโ of expeยญriยญence as a medยญical biller although I will be purยญsuยญing othยญer career options in the near future. In addiยญtion, I have many hobยญbies includยญing readยญing, bowlยญing, stargazยญing, jigยญsaw puzยญzles, ushยญerยญing and attendยญing plays, travยญelยญing and takยญing picยญtures, going to the symยญphoยญny and takยญing art classยญes. I have no interยญest in cookยญing and have told everyยญone I canยญnot boil water. Nobody seems to believe me.
Sandra Berger (since 2025)

My name is Sandra K. Berger. I have known about Humanism for 30 years or more, since my son, Doug Berger, has been a memยญber, but I just recentยญly became a memยญber of the SHoWLE group. For the past 5 years I was includยญed as a guest, so some of you know me.
My life expeยญriยญences give me an unique perยญspecยญtive that can be used toward givยญing for SHoWLE and memยญbers of the group.
