Typography I - Fall 2006
Sorry the images are a little dark! This was an assignment where we had to pick an event, create a quote of our own and then illustrate it with text in a way that the reader is able to know what event it is referring to.... can you guess it correctly?

Typography I - Fall 2006
We had to take a word and illustrate it visually using text. Typography I is not done on the computer - everythins is hand rendered. PAINSTAKINGLY hand rendered for hours and hours and hours and hours....

Drawing 1

Okay, WAIT! Don't be impressed yet... let me explain. The pieces that represent silverware on this drawing were part transfer and part me. There's this SO cool marker type thing that you can use to transfer a photocopied image onto anything. I added detail and dimension to the transfers. Okay, with that cleared up I can say proudly that the two circles are completely Guy. That's all original sketch and shading. Go ahead, be impressed now. :) This piece was up in the hall and someone wanted to buy it!! They made an offer, it was little bit low so I countered after seeking advice from instructors. The person who was interested in it said they couldn't pay more than what they offered. How cool that someone wanted to purchase some Guy art!

Drawing 1 (sort of)

I took Drawing 1 last summer but they combined the D1 class with the Drawing 2 class. I was the only Drawing 1 student so I basically advanced to Drawing 2. Of course, I'll still have to take Drawing 2 since I only got credit for D1. I'm glad it worked out that way because the instructor ROCKED. This was an abstract drawing.... there was a pile of stuff in the center of the room (manequin - how do you spell that?, plastic fruit, vase, etc... ).

2D Design

We were working on grayscale. I painted this from a self-portrait photo I took of myself in Black and White Photography. I am now using the same photo for a project in my Computer Lab... well, we were suppossed to start it today but class was cancelled. Next week.... Anyway, I started out studying Chuck Close and then came up with my own method of painting this portrait loosely based on his style.

2D Design

These are images that we had to create that represented certain words. You could only use four black squares on a white background. Can you match the words with the image? They are: Increase, Tension, Playful, Congestion, Order, Bold.

Black & White Photo 1

I came up with a concept, took photographs, developed the film and prints, and even made the book!!! I'm talking cut the board, covered it with material, drilled holes (with some help from the fantastic Beth in the photolab) and put this together for my Black & White Photo I Class. (There are more pages to the book, these are just some samples.)

Pointillism

Other than our final project, this was the only assignment we were allowed a little bit of freedom on. I decided to try and duplicate a photograph I took in Maine. She thought my pointillism technique was a little too sloppy.

The Bezold Effect

The only difference in these two paintings is the background color. The rest of the colors are exactly the same. The Bezold Effect is when colors appear different because of the color they are associated with. That's the simple way to explain it. The computer image doesn't really pick up the full impact of the change. You'll have to check it out in person some time. It's kinda wild.

Value, Hue & Intensity Contrast

Color Fundamentals - First Assignment
These were done with paper and each little piece was glued down.... lots of fun (sarcasm). The rest of the semester we worked with paint.

Quality
The originals of the work below weren't scanned into the computer but photographed by a digital camera on the living room floor. So, they don't look very crisp.... sorry! They're a little better in person.
