100 DAYS:
June 8 marked 100 days since we rescued and adopted our new girl Trinity. We had originally thought of changing her name but our two little girls, ages 4 and 2, decided they wanted to keep the name so we did. It’s hard to remember what it was like before her. We are now a family of five, me (Tom and dad), Kyle (Mom), Bella (4), Sophie (2) and Trinity.

Things happened very fast with her adoption and I think before we realized it we were on our way to pick her up on Saturday morning, March 1. We’re pretty sure that was the first time Trinity had seen snow, but we have no way of knowing for sure. We do know that she was cold when we took her outside, she is definitely more comfortable now that it has gotten warm outside. Kyle keeps telling me that we might need to get her a sweater but there is something about dressing up dogs that just doesn’t seem right to me. We’ll see how she does in the fall when it starts to get cold again. She learned quickly in those first few days where our heating vents were and would always follow the sun as it moved its way around the house through our windows.

Kyle said it best on the phone with a friend of hers about a month after Trinity joined us. We are now a family again. We had had a dog once before, but she now lives with one of my cousins and his family. Nala was a great dog but following Sophie’s birth we decided she needed more attention than we could give at the time. She now enjoys an amazing life with my cousin, his wife and their two kids. We are truly a family that will always have a dog and after realizing that earlier this winter we began to look.

Kyle found Trinity on Petfinder, and through the help of Paws New England and Hearts of Gold Pit Rescue we were able to bring her to Connecticut. Things happened very quickly and within a week of seeing her sad story, we decided we needed to bring her into our home. There were several ladies who helped us along the way and helped bring Trinity to us, to them we say thank you. Adopting her was truly a great move for our family and hopefully we have brought her to a place where she knows she is loved.

Adopting a pit bull was originally a concern for me, not Kyle, but me. I knew very little about the breed and like most who don’t know much I only know about what I read in the paper. We researched, did our homework, and in the end decided that this was the best move for us as a family. Now I can say for sure that we did the right thing, and adopted a dog that is truly magnificent in every way. We did our homework, and in doing so realized that this breed truly has something special to offer, if only given the chance. See what happens when you open your mind and life up to different opportunities? If you had told me I would do this I would have said you were crazy. But that was an uneducated person speaking and making decisions. Now I know, and I’m unbelievably grateful to have Trinity in our lives. There were a lot of sites that helped us make the decision (pittbulllovers.com, badrap.org, etc.) and to those who run those sites we say thank you too, you helped us out in a way you will probably never know, but we appreciate it.

Trinity truly is spectacular. She loves to be with the girls. She loves to play but knows that with the girls she needs to be gentle and patient. The girls have also been amazing with her and continually say, “we love our new doggie.” Sophie loves to tell people she has a pit bull and Bella loves to walk her. She is a true pack leader and does a great job with the leash.

They also know when Trinity needs to be left alone and when she has had enough playing. She has taught both kids how to pick up their toys, with a couple of casualties along the way (baby, Care Bear, etc.). When she wants to play she will look for me or Kyle but she knows her limitations. She is great in the yard and has her special spots where she likes to curl up and hide to stay cool. Although, she seems to enjoy herself more in the sun than anything, we found that out during a recent heat wave over the weekend.

Perhaps the only thing that irks us both is some of the reactions we get from people who know nothing about our dog. It’s the pit bull perception, and something we have taken on since we first got Trinity in March. Some people want nothing to do with her, some people are shocked when they learn we adopted a pit bull and some people just don’t know how to react. The truth is, most of those people know nothing about the breed or about Trinity in general. I’m not sure I should let it bother me so much, I was there only a few months ago. Both sets of Nana’s and Papa’s were anxious the first time we mentioned that we adopted her, but both sets have met Trinity since then and understand what a great dog she is.

Trinity coming to Connecticut has truly changed all of our lives. So much so that we made her her own website, https://www.TrinitythePitBull.com. That’s right, our dog has her own website. Why? For a couple of reasons.

There were so many people who helped get her to us that we wanted to say thank you and stay in touch. Rather than email pictures every day, which I do anyway, we created the site so that they could track her progress whenever it was convenient for them. Secondly, we did it to try and help. Under the website name it states, An Ambassador for the Breed, One Click at a Time, and that is truly what it has turned into. Take a look at the site and tell me she is not the sweetest dog who absolutely is in love with her new home. She has changed my mind about the breed, and the hope is that the site can continue to do it for everyone who visits.

That’s our story, a little longer than first thought, but I hope it conveys just how lucky we are to have brought Trinity into our home.
