Back in 2008, I asked readers (of this blog) for novels to read over the summer, mainly books considered “classics” that I haven’t read but should. The replies were all over the place and I’ve not included books I’ve read. So, this page is basically my own “to-read” list for future reference. If you can suggest a book I should read, let me know!
Update 2010: I plan to begin reading books from this list as a 2011 new years resolution of sorts. But, I also need to get through the 30-odd books I’ve marked as “to read” on Goodreads. But, I’m always open to new suggestions.
Suggested Books I’ve Either Never Read or Can’t Remember Whether I’ve Read (which is basically the same thing in my brain):
North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell
Ramblin’ Rose by Calder Willingham
The Winter of Our Discontent by John Steinbeck (this one slipped through the cracks)
Forever Amber by Kathleen Winsor
High Rising (and others) by Angela Thirkell
Middlemarch, Mill on the Floss, and Adam Bede by George Eliot [2011: Listened to Middlemarch on audiobook. Might be the only Eliot I ever read.]
Bleak House and Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf (I swear I must have read this one at some point.)
Kindred by Octavia Butler
What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day by Pearl Cleage
The Red Tent by Anita Diamant
Middlesex by Jeffrey Euengides [2010: Read this and loved it!]
Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott
Five Quarters of the Orange by Joanne Harris
Animal Dreams by Barbara Kingsolver
In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez
Cherry by Mary Karr (memoir) [2011: Gift from my sister. Read it.]
