Have had a rather busy couple of weeks, but they've been good. The following is a really brief summary
Finished off at Arts for 2008* and my last day consisted of meetings, lunches and other events. Am missing the job there but by the same token I'm so far really enjoying my job with BHP. I think the break from Art's will do me some good.
* Barring a couple of days where I'll be in for downtime and when I have a free moment to drop in and do some work there.
BHP has so far been really enjoyable. Officially, depending who you ask, my job title is 'Plant Technician', 'Operator', 'Metallurgist' or 'Vac Student'. Unofficially I have the title that I really like 'Hose-ologist'. The job consists of about 40% inspecting the plant to make sure it's operating as intended and recording performance numbers. The other 60% of my shifts are cleaning up the mess that happens whenever you crush thousands of kgs of rocks.
It's really nice to actually work on a facility that isn't Oil and Gas based. Although it's not my forte and I don't think I'll ever be a rock-head it's exposing me to some Chem Eng things that my degree never did and it's a great learning experience. I find being on the end of a hose cleaning up rocks and mud isn't too bad either. It's very hot outside and you inevitably get wet while hosing so it's nice cool work. The water is aquifer water however and it's 3 times more saline than sea water so you inevitably end covered in salt and other shit. Still, it's good mentally relaxing work and it's not all that bad.
Tomorrow afternoon I'm out to go back on site for my first 8 night shifts and I'm currently torn. I'm really looking forward to getting back into it, particularly as I'll probably be in a new section of the plant and having a new part of the process to look at and learn about. On the other hand, being away from Lauren is pretty tough and I may not see her again before she heads to NZ so it's going to be tough when I'm not doing a 12 hour shift.
Oh well, things have been fun so far and I'm sure I'll post photos at some point for you lot to see.
My thesis has hit a bit of a slow patch at the moment. Things were progressing quickly until we noticed errors caused by (what we suspect to be) leaking. We agreed to do some housekeeping and swap some of the vessels around. These vessels are non trivial to get to, sat in a water bath that is inaccessible without some creative disassembly. When we pulled them out of the water we found what you see above.
Long story short, I now need two new vessels (the small one and the one I was going to swap with it). The big one is still viable it'll just need a light sand to clean it up. I can't actually do any lab work now until the new vessels arrive, which is very frustrating. At least I have a lot I can write about re: new corrosion prevention procedures.

Starting to get a little stressed about my one exam now, still have over seven days to cover the material I need to cover. Have been very slack to this point, but it's hard to get motivated about a single open book exam. Will spend some time tomorrow covering the first third of the unit (really easy) and leave plenty of time to go over the stuff I struggled with.
Thankfully, it is open book so if I can work out how things are supposed to be done with some of the problems I can take worked examples with me. I struggle to rote learn examples, when the solution is in front of me it's too obvious and my brain goes 'duh, you don't need to memorise that' then I inevitably forget.

Other than that, life is still pretty sweet. Work has been interesting, albiet because I'm creating work to do to keep myself busy. Took a bunch of photos with Mum's D40x today and kicked myself when I downloaded the first lot only to discover she'd left it on ISO 1600 and some of the nicer shots were quite grainy. Oh well, lesson learned - when using someone else's camera check that their settings are sane.
Have become hopelessly addicted to Transport Tycoon again which is dangerous before an exam. Still, I'm going to put a lot of pressure on myself this week to study lest I fail and have to do a second semester next year.

Sorry for the picture spam, I try to limit myself to two, but I need to drop in the additional thesis shot as well :)
Things are pretty good at the moment. All my assessments are in, already had one of my two exams* and now I'm twiddling my thumbs for the next fourteen days so I can sit my open book Control and Mechatronics exam. Oh well, the coming week will allow me to do something which is normally unheard of during study break - catch up on some of my sleep!
Thesis is still moving along slowly, and I'm really going to have to kick my rear into gear in the coming weeks. At the moment it's all problem shooting based and every solution we find introduces yet more problems. I'm concerned that the initial equipment design was bad and that at the end of the day I won't have anything to write up and submit. The bigger problem will be on Tuesday morning when I have to remove a vessel from a water bath. I can't get to the vessel because of the water bath, I can't move the water bath because of the vessel... fun times.
* Yay in semester exams, because having an exam when everything else is due really makes our lives easier </sarcasm>

Went to the Red Bull Air Race yesterday and debated going again today. Saw very little of the actual races because I was much to interested in lurking around the airfield watching the pilots doing their run-ups, takeoffs and landings. Pushed my little A80 to it's limits and noted that long distance photography is one of the cases where I'd really love a DSLR.
Had to fight the urge to avoid going to South Perth today to watch more of the race, in the end being slow to get out of the house killed off my chances of seeing some of the events I wanted to see so I decided not to go.
It's done! Six days with minimal sleep on the part of four people resulted in what you see above. The total number of pages is somewhere around 400 spread across 3 volumes and a supplement for all of our A3 pages. After massive delays at uniprint we finally got it in fifteen minutes before it was due, despite having everything done at 1pm (due time was 3:55pm).
Last night involved quite a bit of free alcohol, the first warning sign that the supervisor was trying to get us plastered was the continuous flow of jugs he bought... the second should be his stories about what his team mates got up to after they handed in theirs. There was a quite surreal moment when he asked about what beers they have on tap at the tav... "They have James Squire on tap? Why the fuck do I drink at the uni club then?".
Oh well, no hangover this morning so I guess that's a win win situation.

Lecture Attendance FAIL in the last two weeks. I need to stop blaming work for taking all my time and start blaming myself. Work will live without me, my grades won't. It's also time I started spending more time in the lab at Uni, Last semester's students are now finished and are beginning the process of madly writing, if I don't go and do the lab stuff, no one will and that would be bad for my chances of finishing my final year project.
Point for discussion
Why do lecturers think group work is a good idea? If my half a management degree has taught me anything it's that group work at uni teaches nothing about effective team work. Nearly every group I've ever been a part for an assignment has ended up dividing the work, doing it individually and then throwing it all together at the last minute. Hardly achieving the team based experience the University is aiming for.
There have been two exceptions to that rule in the whole five years I've been a uni student. 1. Working with a couple of equally motivated friends 2. Design project, where without effective teamwork, you just don't get it done*
* by the end of the first submission, this team is also covered by rule 1.

Afternoon sun through the rigging of the Duyfken Replica International Talk Like a Pirate Day 2005
Mmmmm, it's only Monday afternoon and I'm already as tired as if it were a Thursday night. I'm pretty sure this is largely due to not actually catching up on any of my residual sleep debt from last week over the weekend. For its part, however, the weekend was well and truly worth it with the wonderful wedding of theducks and lizbyrd yesterday. The whole day was lots of fun and I take my hat off to bride and groom.
Sleepy Lizard
The house is kicking with wildlife at the moment. The Willy Wag Tails that have nested in the back yard for the last two years are back and their three new babies have just fledged the nest today. That of course means we'll only have to put up with these babies for another week or so before the parents give them the boot and come back for round two. Also floating about the garden is a Sleepy Lizard who has turned up off and on over the last few years. We left the back door open on Saturday and he decided that he wanted to be inside and then understandably got ticked off when we put him back outside.
Uni feels like it's in limbo a bit at the moment with no major bits of assessment looming in the coming two weeks. It's a little dangerous as I've been sucked back into being a bit slack. Missed all the lectures for one of my units last week, which I'm a bit disappointed in myself at. The saving grace I guess is that the notes are well written and the unit isn't that hard, so I'm barely behind.
Oh well, I'm still well on top of things this semester which makes an unusual change, I'd love to see my results for one of the units given we've already had some 70% assessment but given there is no requirement to sit the exam, I have a feeling they're going to sit on them just to make sure we all turn up.
Work on the other hand has been a bit of a roller coaster ride. I've been training ilumiari up in the basics of being a sysadmin and she's been absorbing it like a sponge. Things are potentially going to be a little hectic at the moment as we're between staff and have people out on leave. Provided nothing breaks it'll be smooth sailing. If something does break, it'll be good to have another systems person learning in the wings.
Been stupidly busy with Design Project these last few weeks. Thankfully, the latter half of this week has been a bit easier with the next submission not being due for another couple of weeks. It's rapidly approaching the point of my not caring too much about it anymore. With an average mark of 84% the hard work has been worth it as I only need a whopping 6 marks from the remainder of the unit to earn a pass.
That said, the last week has been pretty tough. I'm not sleeping well again, between design, thesis and gearing up for vac work my stress levels have been high enough to guarantee more than one sleepless night lately. It's a little dangerous as although I'm working on my thesis my literature review isn't going anywhere. Hey, you try critically reading academic texts when you're ready to sleep.
Other than that, uni is going on remarkably well this semester. What is amazing is that I've only missed classes when I've absolutely had to miss them. I'm not sure where this new found desire to do well has come from, but I'm certainly not wishing it away.
Remember when I said 3 pages for that design project... I was wrong
have been working more or less solid for 10 hours now and still only 3/4 of the way through. Edit: And it's not like I started today either, have been at this 5+ hours a day since Saturday
The Last 1/4 is easy, just stupidly tedious
On the plus side, I decided last night that my sleep debt was high enough to warrant a day off uni (only had one lecture this morning)... Decided this after an incident last night which I don't think I'll discuss here.
My Powershot A80 has packed it in. I turned it on for the first time since the end of May and this is what greeted me...
A bit of reading later and I've discovered that Canon had some problems with this (and other) models and the CCD wiring breaking. Potentially they'll fix it for free if that's found to be the problem.
There's another possibility, however and that is that I dropped it. Well, to be more specific, I dropped my backpack from a height of about a meter by accident about two weeks ago. I put my camera in the bag some time in the last two weeks planning to take a few photos at uni (which I never got around to doing). I'm 90% sure the bag got dropped before the camera went into it but that still leaves me 10% uncertain.
If it is drop damage, I suspect it'll be a bin job as a new camera will cost less than fixing this one. It's a shame as the A80 took such nice pictures. Question is, do I try for the repair as it'll cost a fair bit in courier costs...
