Thanks for your immediate reply! See my followup comment yesterday, I am pretty sure that was all it was – apparently the fact that Reynolds even listed a Vermeer painting at all was evidence that that painting you named had impressed him.

I’m not sure I can. I wrote this some long time ago, and I believe that the line came from an entry in a specific souvenir/guide book from the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. The reference should reside in his journal from 1781 when he visited in the Netherlands, but it’s possible he was speaking of a different Vermeer, I suppose. Museum publications often color things to suit their exhibition of the moment; that combined with my sloppiness in research can lead to all sorts of errors. A quick Google search tells me Reynolds was visiting a Mr. Gart in Amsterdam which may help if you have access to the journal. Good luck.

“THE CABINET OF M. LE BRUN. Dead Hare, &c . by Weeninx. Tobias taking leave of his Father: his mother with a spinning-wheel. – Victor. – School of Rubens. · A Fresh Gale , by Everdingen ; like Backhuysen, but the light mellower. A Woman pouring milk from one vessel to another: by D. Vandermeere.”

The ability to draw marble, everyday objects and human expression and beauty, leaves me in awe like I have been blessed in some spiritual way.
Thank you for your observations (all of you above) . I pray all of us will continued to be blessed by awe.

Thank you so much. I didn’t know about the envelope doodles, and I think that is a delightful idea. I pledge to take it up myself. Good of you to share.

Sat, 28 Jul 2018 19:11:01 +0000https://foxpudding.wordpress.com/?p=1268#comment-1678About 20 years ago my boss showed me an envelope that he had received a letter in with a little doodle of some prairie grass on it. The letter had come from his friend in Montana (I think). He explained that people in that area did the doodles on envelopes as an homage to Charles Russell. I didn’t know who he was. When I got home that night my brother said, I got a new album by Mike Nesmith, I think you’ll like it. The first song was “Laugh Kills Lonesome” and there’s a line that says, “That why Charlie Russell painted it.” Two times in one day I had been schooled about Charles Russell. Thanks for posting the image of that painting. It looks just like I imagined it.
