It's been a while so I thought I'd better drop a few sketches on the old blog.
Happy to be back!
Hello everyone. I apologize for being away so long...over a year! I have been on an incredible journey this last year. I was given the great fortune of being Animation Director on a series called RUBY GLOOM. This show has kept me incredibly busy but it has been very rewarding. I am working with an incredible team who have put so much passion into their work!. Our Director is Robin Budd whom I've had the pleasure of working with back at Disney on Return to Neverland. My good friend Darin Bristow is the Supervising Technical Director, and our Art Director is the talented Adrian Thatcher. The beautiful character and prop designs are under the supervision of Brad Coombs. The incredibly versatile Mike Smukavic is one of our Story board artists! The list goes on.......a dream team! I hope to continue to post some more great news about our little show as well as some personal stuff I've been up to this last year. See you all soon.

Train Station - Layout...
When I first started in the business ('94) it was all Layout for me. I apologize for the quality, but it's a copy of a copy. This was done for a show called 'Arsene Lupin'. It was an A to D pan, and at $30 a layout...well, lets just say that I made very little money that week. Cheers.
Lucas Arts: development sketch....
I just came across this drawing while clearing out yet another bin of old work. I can't believe it's been about 9 years since I did this....I was working at Lucas Arts and we were asked to develop a game called Justice Unlimited..which never went anywhere. However, I have some really fond memories...It was just a few of us, creating different types of superheroes and supervillians. It doesn't get much better than that!

My attempt was to try and mimic the style of Toulouse Lautrec with this image that I had in mind. I've begun to paint it but I'm not really happy with the direction it's going in. I think I'll have to do a bit more research to really get that early 1900's style across....but I thought I'd share the rough sketch.
A quick sketch...
This was done on the back of a storyboard page...which you can still see behind the dragon. I'm a little busy these days to clean it up, so I just threw it into photoshop to get a little colour... but it's pretty raw.

Two buddies...I like the design of the guy on the left more then the guy on the right...but I thought I'd show the full page.
8 Crazy Nights...
Today I thought I'd share with you an image from the animated feature "8 crazy nights". It's a film starring Adam Sandler as himself as well as these two interesting characters which he also provided the voices for. I did this image to set-up my scene before I started animating it. It was included in my thumbnail drawings to show layout, composition, fielding, size relationship, if the characters are on model and eye direction. I don't always include a page like this but for this particular scene we had to adjust the layout slightly. Once I got the approval from the director on both the thumbnails and this set-up, I was then able to move forward and start animating the scene.
Story sketch...
Here is another rough story sketch from the idea I've been playing with. Those of you who have been following along have seen several different versions of the boy. I was going to paint it up in Photoshop but then decided to leave it as is. I just don't think I'm ready to put a final line or add colour to this one. Love to hear your thoughts!

Tinkerbell thumbnails....
I thought I would try something a little different and post some thumbnails I did for a scene with Tinkerbell. For those of you who have never heard the term "thumbnails", I'll do my best to explain. I could ramble on about everything it involves and how important it is, but basically they are quick little sketches done to help you plan out your scene. It's incredibly intimidating to start a scene...staring at that blank piece of paper, so having your "thumbnails" really helps you get your thoughts down and over that first hurdle. Enjoy!

This is a rough drawing that I painted up in photoshop...The characters need some tweaking but I'm happy with the direction it's going in. I may do some more drawings with these characters.....perhaps a story is developing.
Peter Pan Sketches...

Tangerine, enjoys swimming, salsa dancing and rocking out to Olivia Newton John's "physical" while cruising in his 74' Pinto!

Two characters I came up with while riding on the the train...no particular reason. Do they get along? Are they about to scrap? I have no idea, but it's just always fun to draw pirates!!

These roughs were done while watching "The Lord of the Rings-Two Towers". It's my own attempt at the Ents designs. I thought I would try adding some colour...not sure if it works, but it's fun to play!

GROSSOLOGY!!
Yes, again it's been awhile since my last blog. Lots has changed - I am now Directing the second season of Grossology - the TV series. This is a great show about 2 teenage kids up against the grossest of crimes. This is my first time directing and I am thrilled with the opportunity.

Ruby Gloom wins...
..... the Pulcinella Award for best cartoon series!
I was honoured to receive the Creative Spark Award in the Fall of 2006, and as part of the award, was privileged to travel to Salerno, Italy for the annual 'Cartoons on the Bay' Animation Festival.
I was representing Nelvana and Ruby Gloom, which was nominated for Best Children's series. How fantastic to be at such an event! There were representatives of the Animation Industry from all over the globe, and to be able to learn and share knowledge with them regarding our amazing field was incredible.
I took part in conferences and discussions with other animators, artists, Directors and Producers, as we compared similarities and differences in our studio and television series. I was thrilled to be able to do a presentation on Ruby Gloom and accept the award on Nelvana's behalf when Ruby Gloom won the award for Best Children's series.
Following the Cartoons on the Bay Festival, I was thrilled to be able to tour more of the Amalfi coast and visit Cathedrals, Art Galleries and beautiful Historical Ruins and Landmarks, learning so much about the art and architecture of the Region.
What an opportunity of a lifetime, and I am so grateful to the Creative Spark Award for allowing me to experience this amazing Festival and Italy's Artistic Treasures.
