My oldest and boldest design-the Mina Harker-is back in time for your witching hours.ย
Thereโs a new iteration of the Vรถlva, inspired by the crystal balls carried by Norse visionaries.ย
And Iโve updated my beloved gothic glasses chain. This new version is lighter weight, easy to wear, and the adjustable ends fit a variety of glasses including sunglasses!ย
This month is Disability Pride Month, and I am honoured to be part of the resilient disabled community. I want to share a bit about my journey as an independent maker with you.ย
There are many disabled folk like me running small businesses, making ends meet in the gig economy. For many of us, regular employment in the ablest world is impossible. Like so many other people in my community, my solution was to start a business, though at the time I didnโt think thatโs what I was doing.
Fourteen years ago I sold a pair of vintage earrings on Etsy to a wonderful friend of mine from High School. I had only just opened my Etsy shopโa Goddess-send for many years, and its popularity would lead to me open my own independent shop at feralstrumpet.com.
In 2024 I decided to scale back my presence on Etsy as changes on the platform were threatening to destroy the business I built. This isnโt just my problem, thoughโmany sellers on Etsy are also disabled, self-employed makers. Six years ago, the Etsy seller census found its sellers at the time to be 87% women, and many were also disabled.
Many years ago, Etsy allowed for a flexible scale for new businesses. This flexible business model was well suited to women who keep the world turning with their (unpaid) care and kindness.ย In 2019 I wrote:
โI thought I could outsmart the Etsy Overlords in a Saul Goodman kind of way. For years, I didโbouncing back after many challenges: the algorithm stranglehold on social media, the loss of my European customers after Brexit (a third of my customer base, gone.) The suppliers I worked with for a decadeโindependent, ethical and smallโwent out of business. My chronic pain reached critical mass so I paced the work out and taught my partner to make some of the designs.โย
Feral Strumpet sustains me in other ways, now. I survive with multiple chronic illnesses (arthritis, fibromyalgia, clinical depression and severe asthma), and my beautiful shop–the dream that began 14 years ago–is still here changing and adapting with me. I know I say this a lot, but itโs true: your support of our shop means so muchโit is still our labour of love, and we couldnโt do it without you.ย
July is disability pride month and we are celebrating. I live as a disabled person with multiple chronic illnesses, and I am proud to be a member of the disabled community–represented by our beautiful flag:
I have created some designs to using these colours as well as the colour stories of purple and blue for ME/CFS and fibromyalgia–a condition I live with.
Mike has spent decades supporting, advocating and caring for disabled adults.
Our Chronically Awesome Collection is for spoonies, the people that love us, and anyone feeling solidarity. You’ll also find a selection of blue designs (the awareness colour of ME/CFS) and purple in the collection!
To celebrate Pride month, we’ve put together aย collection of Bifrosts–our classic rainbow stack as well as some one-of-a-kind stacks in the colours of different pride flags.ย
Feral Strumpet are proud trans allies & Ally identifies as queer–we are a queer-owned business.
“In making these little ombre stacks I felt how far we have come from my first Pride march in the late 80s. Each of these one of a kind necklaces is a meditation on kinship and solidarity with my queer community.” –Ally
Witchesโ Hearts pendants are new in the shop-they’re encased in filigree armour and adorned with faceted glass crystals.ย We witches have big, beautiful hearts-do we not?
Storm witches, swamp witches, ember witches, sea witches, brave witches, night witches–all beating out their magic pulse–which calls you?ย
๐ We’ve just forged a few hag stones, just in time for Witches’ Night and Beltane!ย
Two pendants–a wee holey stone and a larger hag stone are made of recycled sterling silver–as well as a pair of tiny hag stone stud earrings!ย Each is unique and forged by hand. The pendants hang from delicate chains made of recycled sterling silver.ย Find them here.
We also have a beautiful hag stone ring in the shop! Sometimes called a fairy stone, a witches stone or Odin stone, this silver version is inspired by these magical holey stones usually formed by running water–our version of silver is formed by fire, quenched in water and air.
For the last 12 years I have been making threader hoops that close with an ingenious coil that travels around the hoop and over the opening when the hoop is put on the ear, making it secure and visually exciting. I called them Teslas, after the Tesla Coil, an invention of the scientist and showman, Nickolai Tesla. At the time, the Tesla car manufacturer, owned by Elon Musk, was doing prototypes. I’d never heard of it.ย Over the years I have wanted to change the name but it had stuckโpeople referred lovingly to their hoops as Teslasโpeople searched for them online using this name, and I was reluctant to change it.ย
Nicolai Tesla–photoshopped with hoop ring
When Mike joined the shop, I showed him how to make the coil-closure hoops and he improved the design over the last 8 years making each pair by hand. Over the last 14 years, I have seen many of my other designs copied by places like Wishโbut the coil hoops must be made by hand in a specific wayโmaking them near impossible to copy.ย
Sadly, Nikolaiโs surname is now tainted by sociopathic men in power. From now on you will see us call our hoops Orbitals. (We are changing every mention of Teslas, but itโs taking a while, so if you see an artefact remaining, we are working on this.)
For those of you wonderful customers who have been with us from the beginning, you know Feral Strumpet has weathered many storms. Through it all, our customers are our lifeline!ย
Small businesses in the UK have been up against a lot. Over the past 14 years, we’ve met huge challenges and threats and tried to survive them creatively:ย
The hostile take over of Etsy, now run for shareholders rather than artists and makers.ย
The introduction of extortionate algorithms on social media. This affects the visibility of small scale artists, musicians and writers especially.ย
When Brexit took the UK out of the EU, we lost over a third of our customersโall European friends who could no longer afford our pieces, now subject to exorbitant customs fees and delays.ย
Other small business in our network have folded. For instance, our main supplier of findings– ethical, family-run and with whom we have worked for over 10 years–went out of business.
The social media landscape, run by oligarchs, now requires difficult ethical choices.
I am disabled and manage my energy limiting condition and chronic pain well, but adapting to these changes has taken all my energy.ย The last thing that bothered me was the name of my unique hoop designโnow called The Orbital.ย If you have read this far, thank you. Just know that every time you support a small maker–be that buying what we make or sharing it with others by word of mouth or online, you help keep us going. Without you, we would not be here!
How do you wear your Orbitals? Send me your pics! Letโs celebrate the persistence of Strumpets and the Orbital Hoopโmy most well loved design!ย
This month Feral Strumpet turns 14. I started the shop 14 years ago on my kitchen table with a box full of beads and a vision. I began on Etsy and grew, selling carefully sourced vintage as well as the work of other artists like Green Girl and Nicole Piar.
