I’m 26 years old, a wife, mother and large dog owner. I’m apple shaped, with a large bust and big stomach. I’m 5’6″. 230 lbs
Please suggest some clothes that would flatter my shape, slim me down but still be cool and functional. It feels like summer here and too many layers are unbearable.

Hourglass figure always says to wear stuff that keeps both sides looking even, but when i do that it tends to make me look/seem shorter. I was told for being short to play up the top so that my legs are less noticed and thus seem taller but that doesn’t go with hourglass shape. So if I am a petite hourglass, should i concentrate more on keeping myself looking tall rather then curvy?

Comment on Fashion Lesson #30: The Miniskirt by Annie

Mini skirts are pretty much out of my style, or lets say, It can be just a cm or two above knee. I now prefer skinny / tight trousers, pencil skirts below knee and dresses with a nice silhouette . I suppose, women can still be sexy after their 30’s but I suppose in a different way. Heels play a huge difference, if able to wear (I have a back problem for as long as I remember, I wouldn’t wear heels for too long nor often). I know, I had some issues what to wear and what not. But seeing how women stay younger at present, it seems like the years for mini skirts have been extended a little. Sure, I have days where I reach out for baggy clothes but that would be at home. We all have days like these!
Great post!!

Comment on Fashion Lesson #9 Long & Short Necks by Ged Harrison

However, If you don’t want to wear a scoop or v-neck, especially in Winter, I’ve noticed that a cowl neckline can also look very good, as it’s a kind of false u-shape.

Mon, 12 Sep 2011 17:54:26 +0000https://fashionsensei.wordpress.com/?page_id=2970#comment-2202Thank you!! Your information has finally helped me analyze and understand my body construction! How do I dress a body with a long rise where the extra length comes from the thigh rather than the torso? The dis-proportion is between the waist and the knees. I guess I would describe this body construction as “dropped crotch” rather than “short-waisted”. Fortunately, my calves are proportionately long so I look leggy rather than short-legged. Do I avoid pants all together? Overall I’m tall, slender, straight body type.

Comment on Vogue UK Says Enough is Enough, Start Designing Clothes for REAL Women by Joy Lynn Spencer

And really freaking agree with you. Seriously, it will help immensely with body acceptance to have clothes designed to celebrate a multitude of figures instead of hiding all but one and attempting to make them look like the rail thin ideal. I more than agree with you, I’d scream at the top of my lungs to cheer you on.
But that *is* a real woman in a that picture. A real woman who’s been exploited and brain-washed by an industry and a culture to the point of horrendous self-harm. Let’s not succumb to the temptation in these cases to degrade or mock her, or at best pity her. This woman deserves genuine compassion; can you imagine having your mental illness exploited like that and put on show for the whole world to see? (Assuming it’s a mental illness–anorexia–and not a physical one that is the cause of such emaciation, which is a pretty damn safe assumption.)
Don’t take your fight of fat-hate and turn it into thin-hate just cause it makes you feel better. That’s only a superficial form of self-acceptance.
