Comment on Etymology of daughter by Georgios Andrias

The fact that none of you has heard of the Indo-European family is astonishing. Variations of the word daughter can be found in Germanic, Celtic, Slavic, Iranian languages, Greek, Armenian and Sanskrit. All the above are more or less related, Indo-European languages. It is a heirloom.

Nope, it is a common Indo-European word. None borrowed it from someone else. İt is like a heirloom. İnherited from the past

Thu, 18 Feb 2021 07:06:32 +0000https://ewonago.wordpress.com/?p=499#comment-14259Daughter, that is a common word in Indo-European languages, comes from two Indo-European roots that combine to mean the member of the family that was supposed to milk animals (Persian Doogh is also from the same Indo-European root). Similarly, father was the protector, mother was the feeder and brother was the load carrier of the family. For more details see “An Etymological Dictionary of Persian, English and other Indo-European Languages”, or the Kindle Book “Persian Etymology”.

I believe it has ancient Persian origins and also was used by the Ancient Greeks as said above. But I am quite sure it was something in the Middle East before it was used in Greece.

Tue, 24 Oct 2017 11:51:08 +0000https://ewonago.wordpress.com/?p=814#comment-4708There is a complication here because it is a specific type of IndoEuropean animal noun which behaves oddly – and that’s because it was treated as taboo. It does some sound shifting because it is not to be pronounced.

Wed, 16 Aug 2017 07:44:49 +0000https://ewonago.wordpress.com/?p=499#comment-4456After reading this article I felt obliged to make my comment about the origin of name daughter . In this regard I have to say that daughter originated from Persian which perunance dokhtar. As indo iranian language is a branch of indo European language and also so many other names in european language originated from this old language.
Such as father with is padar in Persian. Also mother which is madar.
Thanks.

You have overlooked two other Greek words related to “corner”:”corniza” and “honi”.
Hard to know, however, which came first. A little research to clarify this for your readers would be especially useful.
