Huntsman would quite likely be fairly quality soon after his encounter with China…

And the Tories do not want to do anything that provokes calls of “same old Tories”.

On the other hand, the NUS are not opposing the changes because they care about poorer students – as you say, the changes are good for poorer students. Probably the leadership is motivated by their anticipated future careers in left-wing politics. If the same changes had been made by a Labour government, the NUS would be singing its praises.
