THE RETURN OF WAR

We are watching the ongoing wars in Ukraine and Israel/Gaza in horror. We stand with our colleagues, partners, and alumni in these countries, and with all people who are suffering as a result of military operations. We will not cease to promote transnational collaboration and to share history, historical narratives and memories across borders – our glimmer of hope for a peaceful future.

    My competition entry was about...
    ...the rivalry between my hometown Sliven and the neighbouring town Yambol. Back in the Middle Ages the residents of these two cities were not on good terms. Even today, there is a dispute about which city is better – Sliven or Yambol. But in the 19th century intellectuals realized the need for conflict resolution in favour of both cities..

Either out of genuine concern for reform, desire for personal gain and glory, or a combination of the two, Julius Caesar gave the Republic its final push over the edge following a detailed plan.

    …the effects of the industrial revolution in the textile production of my hometown in the middle of the 20th century. I wanted to create a personal view on local history, so I chose to focus on a local businessman. To illustrate my research and results I designed an interactive scrapbook.

    ...Bulgaria during the time of communism: The military imposed severe movement restrictions on areas near the borders, people were forced to leave their homes and had to move to different parts of the country. In order to enter other regions they needed a special document issued by the police.

    My competition was about...
    …the deportation of my great-grandmother and her family by Soviet authorities to Siberia in 1949. My ancestors lived and worked there in terrible conditions for eight years. Fortunately, they survived and came back to Latvia. For my research paper, I interviewed my 97 year old great-grandmother and enquired family documents related to this period.

    ...constructing a leaf spring crossbow through trial and error, calculating the efficient crossbow bolt through test shots and later comparing my research with historical data. In my research paper I provided a project report and an overview about crossbows.

    …schools in Nazi Germany. I studied the way the Nazis perceived education, the importance they accorded to schooling and the way they changed it to fit their worldview once they were in power. Furthermore, I studied how the system of education affected its students and what students thought of the system once the Nazi regime fell.
