Thank you for sharing. I agree with your views in the article. PLN can make us extremely important in our future lives, and it can connect our lives and work. At the same time, we can also use PLN to find job opportunities. We can learn new knowledge through PLN and spread it to more places so that more people can understand it.

I think your post is very clear! I liked how you design your post, which is much clearer to read and understand. I agree that “not only should we ensure our PLNs are inclusive”, “but also that it is a safe space for people to share their experiences and stories”. In my opinion, a safe social space will make people become more engaged in sharing ideas and connecting with other people. Also, the example that you shared about how an individual’s career will be a choice for creating professional and personal boundaries is effective and persuasive. I really liked that example that you shared in your post.

Sat, 14 Nov 2020 22:25:31 +0000https://ericasteph.opened.ca/?page_id=175#comment-23Very well written, Erica. Media literacy is not anything we can avoid nowadays. I had an experience of communicating with a student’s parents about using online platforms when I had to teach my class remotely a few months ago. The parent was very protective of her child using the the platform and would sign in on his behalf to submit work and participate in group work. It was very difficult for me to monitor the student’s learning and communicate with the parent about trusting the system that we have made for the classes. I wonder how we can help build that trust and understanding of the use of multimedia while respecting those who still endorse traditional ways of learning.

Hi Leah!
Thank you so much. Great consideration – safety for sure ties in, as I think that’s one of parent’s main concerns with their children using the internet. Although I am fully aware of the potential dangers of being online, I think being literate in media can help children and adults better understand the risks, and how to prevent them! Looking forward to working with you as well 🙂

I think your post is very informative and clear! I liked how you organize your post as well, which is much clearer and easier to read. I agree that the fear among parents “has stemmed from worried for their children”. As Julie said in the conversation, media is a kind of new things to them and they are fearful rather than trying to learning about it. Therefore, in my opinion, educating media literacy will help people have a much clearer understanding of how media works. Also, I liked how you explained the reasons why we should aim for varied views but factual consensus. As you mentioned, it will help people ensure that they are not being biased. The example that you shared about “media takes one small screenshot of a large story and manipulates it to look” is persuasive. Actually, most people like to read this kind of news, so media gives to viewers in order to make money.

I think that someone who is not familiar with media literacy would find your blog post to be very educational. The way you’ve explained it is easily understood and I believe that it is a good summary of what media literacy is. One thing that I have been considering regarding media literacy (and I encourage you to give it some thought as well) is how online safety ties into media literacy! We’ve spoken about safety online in previous weeks and I think it ties in here as well. Overall I think this post was excellent, looking forward to working with you on the group assignment!

That’s such a great point about adults fearing that TV promotes violence. I hadn’t thought of that, but that’s the perfect generational example of fear of new/unknown things! Thanks so much for sharing.

Mon, 09 Nov 2020 06:31:00 +0000https://ericasteph.opened.ca/?page_id=157#comment-14Hi Erica,
Thank you for your sharing. At present, since the Internet has become an indispensable part of our daily life, it may be said that it is an essential part of our daily life. We like to share our living conditions on various social network platforms, such as the scenery and places we traveled, the food we ate, and so on. But we may have overlooked the possibility of exposing our own privacy on social platforms, for example, our location may be exposed, home address, and so on. So online privacy security is currently a problem, but I believe it is not permanent.

Thanks for sharing. The information displayed in your blog allows me to quickly interpret. Indeed, the data age and online media have enabled the public to understand and understand the information of the world more quickly, so the media has become an indispensable way of life in our lives. Therefore, PLN reached a consensus with each other and can clearly understand the truth behind the story, which is a good thing for the public.

Sun, 08 Nov 2020 14:05:04 +0000https://ericasteph.opened.ca/?page_id=175#comment-12Hello Erica! Impressive work! I would say that your cohesive writing and use of direct and simple language made me enjoy reading your work. With regard to the fear of media, I would say that that has always been the case with the adults. Before, when televisions became popular, the adults fear that television shows promote violence. However, I have read an article that the link between television shows and violence is not really well-established. In this regard, maybe the same thing is happening now with social media. Because of this people should be encouraged to learn media and understand the cause of their fear.

Your post is quite clear and informative. I liked the way that you used a few examples in your post to explain your ideas, which is persuasive and effective. In my post, I have mentioned that social media can create a platform for people to engage in communication and build a strong connection to them; however, my new thinking after reading your post is that it can also diminish the cost and help people to save a lot of time and efforts on participation as well. That’s really good point! Also, I agree that people should follow certain rules and guidelines when participating in online community engagement in order to guarantee a more respectful and safer online environment. In my opinion, people should not only follow the extended rules, but also need to realize that respecting to other people’s cultures and beliefs is quite important in online interaction.

I really enjoy reading your blog post! I think your post is very clear, organized, and informative. The example that you shared in this post can help me better know your perspectives directly. I liked how you explained notable individuals use social media and I agree that those people with verified accounts will be affected by fake news or clickbait headlines. Therefore, in my opinion, for notable individuals and their groups, they need to pay more attention to post fake news or information that may cause mislead on their social media tools because most people in public cannot prove the information and will be easily misled by it. Also, I agree that one of the useful ways to address negative replies is to reply them with kindness. Personally, most of time, I only read other people’s comments online instead of commending on the posts by myself. However, when I see some negative comments, I always choose to ignore them. I am wondering if you have read this web article about Ways to Deal With Negative Social Media Comments:
All the ideas in this article are very useful and effective.

Thu, 05 Nov 2020 20:04:43 +0000https://ericasteph.opened.ca/?page_id=169#comment-8Hi! One thing that stuck out in your responses was that you said if you had a notable social media, you would only talk about personal life to an extent. From what I know, that’s absolutely the way to go. I livestream and post videos and several social media apps- one of which my following grew ridiculously quickly- and that makes it all the more important to be careful about what you share. I love talking about some of my crazy work stories and such, but when I do I never say where I work or what store I work at as that could affect my privacy, safety, and employment. I definitely think there has to be a balance because it’s good to be genuine with your audience and show that you’re just like anyone else, but you also have to limit your conversations so you don’t share any personal information that could put you in danger. Great blog post, by the way!

Mon, 26 Oct 2020 05:45:01 +0000https://ericasteph.opened.ca/?page_id=163#comment-7Hi, Erica:
By reading your blog, I have to admit the advantages of online communication: people can not only reduce the cost of face-to-face but also be benign to the development of society by completing their daily work without leaving the house. Every day, the road is no longer congested and wakes up every day. Don’t worry about the traffic jams, just turn on the computer to complete the work in time. Online communication still needs to be improved. Whether it is network information security or supervision, I believe it will be resolved gradually over time.

Sun, 25 Oct 2020 14:10:27 +0000https://ericasteph.opened.ca/?page_id=163#comment-6You’ve shared some important points in this post Erica! One of the points I liked in your post is that online communication can reduce the costs of face to face communication. In today’s current set-up in education, classrooms, laboratories, and libraries are no longer used. This means that compared to normal set-up, universities are currently consuming less electricity. This means that the expenses of universities in their facilities are lessened. Lastly, I also liked the idea that communications done within online communities should be regulated. Regulation is needed especially in instances when certain topics are contents are considered to be sensitive.

Sun, 11 Oct 2020 12:11:53 +0000https://ericasteph.opened.ca/?page_id=149#comment-4Hello Erica! This is a very insightful take on Personal Learning Network and Inclusive education. I would have to agree with you when you said that you were also surprised when the student pointed out that the diagram for inclusivity does not represent inclusivity at all. I would admit that I do not want to believe the student at first but when I read about the student’s explanation, I was convinced that in inclusive education no one should be branded “other” because everyone should be “other.” I personally liked inclusive education because it encourages uniqueness and it does not pressure students to fit in.

It is too easy to say “I have friends from” or “I accept differences and diversity” – your closing reflection is exactly what we need to have as our baseline of inclusion values.
