The covers are probably partly what put me in mind of the Pascal Fearless books, but they’re so much classier. Gas lighting?! I had no idea that even still existed, and wouldn’t have a clue how to use it. Incredible ambience, though, I bet.

Quite different – though I wonder if Aud is a precursor to Hild, in the sense that she also seems super-competent (and Hild defo has sapphic leanings).

Cold Earth is still one of my favourite Sarah Moss books, even though it’s a bit uneven – I read it as an ARC all those years ago, in a cottage near Ullapool which my parents had unwisely rented even though it only had gas lighting. Miserable but atmospheric!
