Am observat că unii, deși sunt deștepți și înțeleg ceea ce este corect, susțin ceea ce este greșit, deoarece aceasta le convine. Și astfel își îndreptățesc patimile. Alții nu se îndreptățesc pe ei înșiși, dar cad în deznădejde la gândul că există în caracterul lor ceva de neîndreptat. Așa face diavolul: pe unul îl împiedică la sporirea duhovnicească prin îndreptățirea de sine, pe altul îl prinde cu sensibilitatea exagerată și-l aruncă în deznădejde.

There are two reasons to fast. The first is to break our attachment to material things, of which food is the most central, and so compel us to depend on spiritual things. When we are eating regularly, food not only sustains our bodies, but provides pleasure and satisfaction. In itself there is nothing wrong with such pleasure. But when we do without food, we are reminded that the only true and lasting source of joy is spiritual. The second is to express solidarity with those whose poverty forces them to go hungry. We may fast from time to time as discipline; but many people fast continually because they have no money to buy food. If we are truly to show compassion to the poor, we must experience within our bodies the consequences of poverty. Fasting is thus an incentive toward generosity. And the money saved during a fast can readily be given to relieve the enforced hunger of others. (On living simply, The Golden Voice of John Chrysostom)

Those who love money are fierce in the pursuit of it, like wild animals pursuing their prey. They do no allow the ties of friendship to restrain them; they betray, cheat, or exploit their closest friends when there is gold and silver to be gained. Nor do they let the chains of conscience inhibit them; they learn to make their consciences as numb as fingers on a cold day. Even members of their own families may be used in their quest for wealth. Their eyes become blind to the suffering they cause, and their ears deaf to the cries of those whose lives are ruined by them. They imagine themselves to be free, pursuing their own interests without constraint. Yet in truth they are slaves to their own greed; and this greed only brings them misery. So they bring a double misery into the world, to those they exploit and to themselves. Worst of all, they are even grateful for their own greed; they give thanks that this desire for money motivates their actions and gives purpose to their lives. While they feel this gratitude, they can never escape.

Oricât ar părea de ciudat, este adevărat că venim în lumea aceasta nu ca să petrecem în ea, ci ca să ne izbăvim de ea – în același fel cum oamenii merg la război nu ca să petreacă în război ci ca să se izbăvească de el! Oamenii merg la război în nădejdea unui bine mai mare decât războiul; noi venim în viața asta pentru un bine mai mare decât viața. Noi venim în viața asta pentru o viață mai bună și mai trainică. Paharul plăcerii

Dacă ți-ar întinde cineva un pocal de aur cu cel mai bun vin din lume și ți-ar spune: „Bea, însă vezi că la fund se află un scorpion,” ai bea oare? În orice pahar al plăcerii pământești se găsește un scorpion la fund. Și, din nefericire, aceste pahare sunt atât de mici, încât scorpionul este întodeauna aproape de buze. (Sf.
