What is the difference between a preface, a foreword and an introduction?

What is the difference between a preface, a foreword and an introduction? I love them and always read them, but what are they? Here’s the way I see it:

I always thought of the introduction as interchangable with the author’s notes; in other words a few words by the author on the hows and whys behind what inspired them to write the book

The preface is usually a quick introduction to the story (also written by the author) and is usually a chapter of the story, which takes place before the story, in order to set the mood of the story

And the forward, usually is an introduction that was written by someone famous (another author, a movie star… or in the case of my uncle’s book some one like Pres. Bill Clinton). The forward usualy talks about that person’s views on the book and is often used to promote the book by being included in press releases.

What’s your take on this? I’d love to hear what you have to say about this post. Leave a comment and share your views!
