When to send out a holiday-themed piece?

When to send out a holiday-themed piece?

most publishers ask for a 6 month timing… submit the story 6 month before the issue it should be in, is on newsstands.

here’s a basic example:

New Year’s Day = July
Valentines = August
Easter = October
Summer Vacation = January
Back to School = March
Halloween = April
Christmas = June

Not all publishers follow this rule, so be sure to check their guidelines to see if they say anything about submitting seasonal work. If they give you are chart to follow go with it, if not follow the 6 month rule.

What’s your take on this? I’d love to hear what you have to say about this post. Leave a comment and share your views!

Get Yourself Banned!

As you know, I finished NaNoWriMo 2006 in flying colors. My NaNo entry, “Love, Lust, Madness” is the latest addition to The Twighlight Manor series. Since than I’ve been editing and rewriting and perfecting. I have  come to a conclusion about “Love, Lust, Madness”, it’s rated M and deals with a very controversial subject. I really went out on limb with this one and now I wonder, Can I even put this thing in print? It’ll get banned before it hits the store shelves. So, for now I have put it aside to collect some dut, while I think about what to do next.

I’ve always believed that the quickest way to become famous is the write a book that the critics well ban… nothing gets your sale up like a book that is banned, it seems the harder the ban hits the more fans gobble it up… just look at the Bible and Harry Potter, the 2 most banned books in history are also the 2 with the highest sales worldwide.

Now Harry Potter has no reason to be banned, there isn’t a single bad thing in it (moral wise). On the other hand you had the Bible, a story about rape, insest, murder, pride, racial hatred, and glorification of blood and slaughter, and yet it sells millions of copies a year, because people  love the story of a 12 year old girl who is raped by a deity only to have her child slaughtered in a grisly bloodbath, by that same deity. Today being Easter, the day we gloriy that rape and murder.  I look at “Love, Lust, Madness” and than I look at the Easter story, and I ask myself… Why should I worry, at least it ain’t as bad as the Easter story.

Writing Exercise: Easter

I’ve just finished packing Easter baskets. Four in all, one each for my 3 brothers and my mom. Today being Easter, and me sitting here surrounded by candy and bunnies, I thought it would be good to give you guys an Easter assignment today. What follows is a “picture story” from the back of a Dove Fairy Bunny. Your assignment is to read it, and than use it to inspire you to write a story.

Here it is:

Fairy Bunny Tale

Not far from Whispering Willows
just north of Rainbow Bay,
is a valley few grown-ups know of
where the magical Fairy Bunnies play.

Not many have actually seen them,
fairy wings make hardly a sound.
Which is why they help hide the Easter eggs
when the Great Easter Bunny comes around.

The Groans, the Grumps, and the Cynical Sneers
must leave their sadness behind,
for the rule of Daffodil Valley
is that Easter belongs to the kind.

So the Spring look skyward for Fairy Bunnies
at sunrise, just past Tulip Hill,
and you might see them winging homeward
to the Valley of the White Daffodil.

~~Dove

I know it’s too late to use any of your results in this year’s Spring issue, but you can go ahead and send them in anyways, if yours gets picked we’ll put it aside for next year.

April Writer’s Challange

One month, One Story, yep, you knew it was coming, it’s time for the: April Writer’s Challange:

Easter is just around the corner. For this month’s challange I thought we  would write an “Eastery” story. Doesn’t have to be Easter exactly. I was inspired by Dove Chocolate’s “Fairy Bunny”, which I saw in the store today. They are so cute. On the box is a poem that tells about an enchanted valley where bunnies with butterfly wings live. It’s a cute little image tale, and it got me to thinking: What a great fantasy story that’d make!

So, this month’s challange is to write a fantasy about an enchanted valley filled with magical faeries and the like. You can spin it off as any genre you like. One idea I thought of was based on my siggie gif: The Vampire Easter Minions. Kind of a fairy tale got mad thing.

Ain’t they cute?

What can you guys think of?

The challange is up, so get going and write!
