.ARK.

Sat babysitting, when my mind wonders.

The excitement overwhelms me when I think of everything 2018 brings: graduation, hopefully my first teaching job and many many more small, yet significant milestones in my life.

However a walk through Leeds city centre today brought me back to reality. Made me think how luck I am. I was disheartened at the number of people where on the streets at this time of year say begging or curling up, collecting newspapers, digging through bins just to survive another cold night.

How many people walk by on the street and not recognise or acknowledge someone begging on the street? We are not all the same, but we can all see that deprivation and not everyone has the same life style or opportunities.

As I walked past each individual, they all wished me a happy new year and I returned the sentiment. It was only when replied a third time that I thought, what does this year hold for you? You have some much hope and manners to greet everyone you pass with best wishes for this year, but how many stopped and donated. I don’t necessarily mean donation in money form but sometimes it can be your time, sometimes listening to somebody or taking 5 minutes out of your day to stop and think….. not everyone is as fortunate as yourself. It could be a good or drink donation or an item of clothing. Everyone has a story, we shouldn’t be so quick to judge, the disbelief that we may live in but sometimes this is a reality some people face.

Take time each day just to think of ARK (act of random kindness). What can you do to help someone else? Doesn’t always have to be in money form.

Expectation

So here it is … the end of what seems to have been a year of term-oil. We have faced everything this year and become united in more ways than one.

People have so many expectations for 2018. And with expectations comes great hope, aspiration and motivation. I hope everyone’s dreams are fulfilled this year.

Make 2018 your year!

Keep your goal insight and the rest will follow;there is a plan for everyone and it will be fulfilled.

Education

When is it too much?

I ask 3 questions..

Are we over educating?

When is enough, enough?

Are children expected to learn things before their time?

Three very simple questions yet they make you think? How far has society come, not only in my life time (however short it may be or long it may be compared to others) but in the past year or five years?

Are we as adults/educators/perspective parents expecting our children to run before they can walk so to speak? Our perspectives can change and that is something that we may forget. Which technology advancing knowledge is becoming more widely accessible: is this good or bad? Knowledge is power, and it is what we do with it that makes us who we are. The ever expanding use of technology enables children to grow up faster, always one step ahead. Can we keep up? Yet, with that thought process we almost expect children to be further ahead than we think. Do you agree?

However, no child is the same.

“Take nothing for granted” – anonymous

we should see each child as an individual and treat them accordingly – we should not expect that all children have the same level of knowledge. Some people could argue that children have too much knowledge around specific concepts and is that down to the availability or awareness of information. On the other hand you have children that may be sheltered and are not exposed to content in the same way.

If teaching and spending time with children has taught me one thing is that each child learns, grows, adapts and developed in their own way. Each child should be cherished as they are individuals. And that is something to be in awe of and valued.

New Year….New Me!

I have been saying to myself for the last couple of months that I am going to start a blog; to Explore, investigate and most importantly share own experiences of teaching – not matter the trails and tribulations that may be faced.

So here it is….

A little bit about me I am a third year Primary Education student studying at the University of Chester. I am in no way saying I know a lot but I feel we can learn a lot from each other and can be inspired by what we read or even by another persons thought process.

My motive and inspiration for teaching comes from my inquisitive nature of how unpredictable children are.

A mentor once said to me –

“All children, given half the chance, will turn feral”-Anonymous

This to me suggests that children are all children at the end of the day an we, as teachers, have to capture their creative spirit and engage it.

I think that is something that we sometimes may forget, and therefore should take into consideration? I ask you to take a moment and think.
