I’m a PhD student at the University of Cambridge, writing a dissertation about the ways in which English-speakers learnt other languages from the 16th to the early 18th century. I am funded by the AHRC and by Emmanuel College, and supervised by Dr. Phil Withington and Dr. William O’Reilly.
In 2013, I was chosen as one of the BBC/AHRC New Generation Thinkers – a group of early career scholars working with the BBC on programming that brings academic ideas to a wider audience. With Dr. Richard Blakemore and in collaboration with CRASSH, I’m a co-founder and presenter of the Cambridge PhDcasts, and I’ve worked on the Cambridge History For Schools programme.
My writing has appeared in the Guardian, the Observer, the Sunday Telegraph, the New Statesman, Fire and Knives, The Junket, and elsewhere. If you’re interested to speak to me about writing or speaking, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
I’m also a comedy writer and performer. I’ve written for the stage and for radio, and recently I have enjoyed performing academic stand-up at Bright Club in Cambridge and London.
