today would have been Saul Leiter‘s 100th birthday.

he is the photographer I feel “right at home” with. when I learned of his photography I was mesmerised and intrigued since he does not necessarily take pictures of ‘interesting’ scenes in terms of what is going on in the picture or hey, there are interesting people in it. instead he focusses on the visual tensions and/or harmonies inherent in the scenery. i.e. how colours and shapes and frames are at interplay at the very moment. his way of photographing touched me since it kind of oozes kindness and friendliness. Saul Leiter is still very influential for my own photography and I wholeheartedly recommend the movie “In No Great Hurry” for a very moving introduction to the man himself.
