‘How do Cyber Islamic Environments impact everyday life?’

Salam and Welcome
This is the web page for the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded Digital British Islam project (grant number ES/W002175/1).
‘Digital British Islam: How do Cyber Islamic Environments impact everyday life?’’ (shortened to ‘DBI’) was an innovative multi-institution investigation led by Professor Gary R. Bunt (University of Wales Trinity Saint David – UWTSD). The ESRC awarded DBI a £804,000 grant. The three-year project began in 2022 and concluded in 2025.
As Principal Investigator, Professor Bunt worked in collaboration with Co-Investigator Professor Sariya Cheruvallil-Contractor (Coventry University) and Co-Investigator Professor Frédéric Volpi (University of Edinburgh).
The DBI team included Research Fellows Dr Khadijah Elshayyal (Edinburgh) and Dr Sadek Hamid (UWTSD/Edinburgh). DBI’s Post-Doctoral Researchers were Dr Laura Jones (UWTSD/Edinburgh) and Dr Alamgir Ahmed (Coventry University/UWTSD).
The Digital British Islam Conference was held in Coventry, 5-6 February 2025. The team presented at numerous events and locations, including at the Digital Methodologies Conference, East London Mosque, the BRAIS Conference at the University of Cambridge, Khizra Mosque in Manchester, Holyrood, the Senedd, and the House of Commons. There are photos, reports and videos on these pages.
While the project formally concluded on 31 July 2025, the team continue to work on project outputs, including a book and journal publications. Return to these pages for more information.
