Wisdom And Understanding

TODAY’S VERSE
For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.
Colossians 1:9 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What an exciting prospect. Paul asked God to fill the Colossians with the “knowledge of His will.” But it wasn’t some instantaneous filling. It wasn’t an “insight” pulled out of thin air. Paul said that the knowledge of God’s will resulted from spiritual wisdom and understanding. What do you wonder about? What about your future has you stymied? What direction are you in need of? You could ask God to give you His will, but according to this passage, you need to ask God to impart spiritual wisdom and understanding to you. Why? Because God’s will is not that simple. Most of the time, we do not need a single answer. Instead, it is a series of answers. “Go this way” will not suffice. It is more like a long-distance trip. You have to navigate across many highways making many decisions about direction along the way. God’s wisdom and understanding give us the ability to discern each step. Today ask God to fill you with the knowledge of His will by giving you all the spiritual wisdom and understanding you need. You can begin to pursue that wisdom and understanding through prayer, meditation, and studying the word of God.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You that You can make Your will abundantly clear to me through spiritual wisdom and understanding. Help me as I meditate, pray, and read Your word, to get all the wisdom and understanding that I need.
AMEN

Talk With God

TODAY’S VERSE
My heart has heard you say, ‘Come and talk with me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I am coming.
Psalms 27:8 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What a glorious invitation! Two elements to an invitation can make it special: who is inviting you and what you are asked to do. In both cases, today’s invitation is extraordinary! First, it is God who is inviting. David said that his heart heard God’s invitation. Have you? Have you sensed that call of the Holy Spirit to come and fellowship with God? He bids you come to Him. God desires your fellowship, but you must come. Second, we see that God has invited you to talk with Him! So many times, we talk “to” God, not “with” Him. What kind of friendship would you have with someone if you did all the talking? That is not fellowship; it is not a relationship. God Almighty has asked you to talk with Him. You can share your innermost thoughts and then wait and listen to what He has to say. God wants to commune with your heart if you will let Him. Today, God has invited you to come talk with Him. Stop now and start a conversation, talk with Him, listen, and let it begin a lifelong dialog.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your invitation to come and talk with you. Today I come to share my own thoughts and situation and to listen. Talk to me God, I want to hear from You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen

Speak To Me Lord

TODAY’S VERSE
So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.'” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
I Samuel 3:9 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever put yourself in Samuel’s position? Have you been to a place where you desire to hear God’s word? God loves and wants to communicate with you. He speaks through His word, the Bible. He also speaks to your heart through the Holy Spirit. In his book Hearing God, Dallas Willard concludes, “Direction will always be made available to the mature disciple if without it serious harm would befall people concerned in the matter or the cause of Christ. If I am right, the obedient, listening heart, mature in the things of God, will in such a case find the voice plain and the message clear, as with the experiences of the friends of God recorded in the Bible. This is a claim that must be tested by experience, and anyone willing to meet the conditions and learn from failures as well as successes can put it to the test.” Today, open your heart to hearing from God. Commit yourself to spend time with God in Bible reading, meditation, and prayer. Build a deep and trusting relationship with Him and ask Him to share His heart with you. Say with Samuel, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” When you come to God in this way, you will hear from Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, I give my heart to You and desire to know You better. I desire to hear from You. I long to discern Your direction in my life. I come and say with Samuel, “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.” In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Don’t Worry

TODAY’S VERSE
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything.
Philippians 4:6 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Don’t worry about anything? How hard is that? Worrying comes so naturally. Perhaps that is why we need supernatural help. Paul shares that the secret to “stopping” worry is “substituting” prayer. We need to pray about what we are worrying about. Paul elaborates, “Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.” If we want to stop worrying, we need to trust God with it. We let Him take the burden while focusing on heartfelt gratitude for all that He has done. When we take on this attitude of gratitude, God can work in our hearts. Paul explains, “Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” Today, stop worrying. Pray about whatever is bothering you. Give thanks to God and let Him fill your heart and mind with His supernatural peace.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, forgive me for worrying. I have not trusted You. Today, I bring You my burden and give thanks for all You have done. Fill me with Your peace, I pray. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Wisdom And Understanding

TODAY’S VERSE
So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding.
Colossians 1:9 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What could you do with it? What would your life be if you had complete knowledge of God’s will combined with spiritual wisdom and understanding? Solomon encouraged us to seek wisdom as if it were gold. Paul goes a step further. He prays that God would give us the knowledge of His will. Do you pray for that? To know God’s will in the affairs of your life would change everything. To have the assurance of what He wants you to do would give you the confidence you need to live the life He wants you to. Having spiritual wisdom and understanding would help you when you are stuck and baffled by life’s ups and downs. Oh, to have His wisdom and understanding when you are tempted to believe lies about yourself, life, and God. How blessed you would be to have His gift of spiritual wisdom to discern between good and evil, right and wrong, truth and lies. If Paul prayed this for the church, you can pray it for yourself. Today do that. Ask God, and do not stop until He gives you spiritual wisdom, understanding, and the complete knowledge of His will.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Heavenly Father, the giver of all good things. I ask you for spiritual wisdom, understanding, and the knowledge of Your will. Guide me; direct me toward this end, I pray.
AMEN

More

TODAY’S VERSE
May God give you more and more grace and peace.
I Peter 1:2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever wanted more of something? The pizza was so good, just one more piece. The alarm goes off, and you think just 15 more minutes. You fall in love, and want to spend more time with that special person. More is a natural response. And yet, for some of us as children, we heard, “Don’t ask.” “Quit begging.” “Don’t bother me.” “That’s enough.” So deep down, the thought of more is perceived as being greedy, selfish, or inappropriate. True, more of some things is not good for you. Gluttony, addictions, lust are forms of “more” out of control. But when it comes to spiritual things, our Father wants us to have more. Paul wanted us to know the love of God more and more. Peter is writing in today’s verse that God wants to give us more and more of His grace and peace. So how do you get more? What were we taught? You have to ask for it. Today, ask God to give you more. More love, more grace, more peace, and more awareness of Himself. You can ask for more of these; He wants you to have them.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I just don’t need more; I want more. More awareness of Your love, grace, peace, and joy in my life. I want more, Lord! I ask in Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Meditate

TODAY’S VERSE
I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles.
Psalms 145:5 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I remember leading a five-day hike in the mountains—what a treat for a young man born and raised in the flat terrain of Detroit, Michigan. And yet, I noticed on the second day that I had spent most of my time looking down at the trail, making sure I would not trip on the large tree roots or twist my ankle on loose rocks. All around me was some of nature’s most magnificent scenery, and all I took in was the subtle shades of green and brown on the ground in front of me. How is it we can be so close to something so glorious and not take the time to capture its essence? David knew the answer. He wrote, “I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles.” David took the time to devote focused attention to God and His wonderful attributes. He dared to stop and reflect, to ponder on God’s almighty power, splendor, and miracles. And when he did, he was a better man for it. You see, focusing on God does not make God powerful; no more than my looking at the mountains makes them majestic. It only allows me to see and know the mysteries of what is already there. Today, don’t miss another moment. Don’t let another day go by without seeing and focusing on all that God is and all the love He has for you. He is majestic, He is full of glorious splendor, and His miracles abound.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I want to know You and Your glorious splendor. Help me stop and meditate on You. Help me focus my attention, love, and devotion toward You. Guide me into a deeper knowledge of You, I pray.
AMEN

Do You Hear?

TODAY’S VERSE
Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding. He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless.
Isaiah 40:28-29 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
God was frustrated with His people. They had wandered far from Him. They would not listen to God, so He sent His prophet Isaiah to ask the people, “Have you never heard? Have you never understood?” We would do well to ask ourselves these same questions whenever we read God’s word. We get so busy, so inwardly focused, that even when we read His word, we do not hear. We do not understand. We don’t begin to fathom the ramifications of the tremendous promises He gives us. In today’s passage, God wanted to emphasize His patience, love, strength, and commitment toward those in need. The prophet writes, “The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding. He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless.” Unlike the Israelites, did you hear it? Did you understand? God is GOD! And God never grows weary of you. He wants to love and help you. He is never weak, not for a second! He fully understands where you are and wants to give you all the strength you will ever need to face the situation you are in. Today, might we hear His voice and understand His great love for us.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father God, help me to hear You. Help me to understand the depths of Your love. Help me know Your truth. Guide me by Your Holy Spirit, I pray.
AMEN

Move In Closer

TODAY’S VERSE
And Peter followed at a distance.
Luke 22:54 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Is that how your spiritual life seems? Jesus was taken away by an angry mob. Most of the disciples scattered in fear. Peter, too was fearful, but at least he decided to follow Jesus, albeit at a distance. Fear does that. We become consumed with it. We think of the past and our failures, and as a result, we look to the future with more pessimism. This worry and fear cause us to miss the present closeness of the Lord. We don’t give up our faith, but its relevance to influence the immediate is lost in all our anxiousness. Today decide to move in closer to Jesus. He has not abandoned you. He has not turned His back. Peter failed to remember what Jesus had told him only hours earlier. “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail.” Jesus also intercedes for you. There is no reason to keep at a distance. Instead, you can do what the author of Hebrews tells us to do. He writes, “Let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, I confess I have been following You at a distance. I have let fear, doubt, and worry take the place of my faith. I come today in obedience, boldly to Your throne and ask for Your mercy and Your grace. Thank You for interceding for me. Thank You that You have promised to help me when I need it the most.
AMEN

Slave To My Beliefs

TODAY’S VERSE
For you are a slave to whatever controls you.
II Peter 2:19 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We like to think that we are so independent. What could ever have control over us? But it is not usually one significant controlling factor we need to worry about. Rarely would just one influence control our whole life. No, the author of Proverbs said it wisely, “It is the little foxes that spoil the vine.” It is the many controlling issues that either set us free or enslave us. Beliefs are that way. It is not one large belief that controls our life. It is a whole series of beliefs that shape who we are. What we believe affects our desires, emotions, aspirations, faith, hopes, predictions, limitations, and behavior. Beliefs can enslave us, or they can set us free. Jesus came to help shape our ideas. Beliefs about life and beliefs about ourselves. So, what do you believe? What limiting thoughts do you have? When you think of yourself, what do you accept as true? When you think of opportunity, what thoughts hold you back? Beliefs can control the way you live. Paul wrote, “We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments.” Today, if you are going to be a slave, be a slave of Christ. Bring your thoughts and beliefs to Christ and let Him shape them, hone them and when necessary, change them.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, I confess that so many of my beliefs are negative, painful, limiting, carnal, angry, lustful, and ungodly. I need Your forgiveness and Your help. Holy Spirit, purify my mind. Sanctify my thoughts and help me bring everyone into captivity and under Your influence. Today I give You my mind. Influence my beliefs, I pray.
AMEN
