Thinking

TODAY’S VERSE
Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.
Romans 8:5 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
“What were you thinking?” Have you ever had anyone ask you that? Usually, it’s after something goes wrong. There was a misjudgment, and your thinking has been questioned. But Paul is suggesting something different. He says we should be purposeful before we think and watch what we let dominate our minds. Paul indicates that it is either the Spirit of God or our sinful nature. What a world of difference the two mindsets have on our lives. The mind dominated by the sinful nature leads to sinful thinking and behavior. The mind controlled by the Spirit of God leads us to do what pleases the Spirit. Today, say “No” to the sinful nature with its temptation and lust. Instead, be controlled by the Holy Spirit

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I want to live my life for You. Let Your Holy Spirit control my thinking. I give You my mind; guide me, direct me, lead me into Your will.

What Are You Thinking?

TODAY’S VERSE
Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
Philippians 4:8

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What are you thinking? What we think about is what shapes us. Paul wrote about our inner dialogue. In today’s passage, he tells us to focus our thoughts on those thoughts that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy. Paul also tells us to battle those feelings, thoughts, and core beliefs contrary to God and His word. He writes, “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” Today, slow down and listen to what you are thinking. Listen to your inner voice, your feelings, and self-talk. This is where the battle for who we are is won or lost. As attitudes, beliefs, assumptions, motives, or predictions are discovered, check to see if they align with Biblical truth. If not, talk to God about it. Confess and renounce those thoughts, making them obedient to Christ. Today, ask God to change you from the inside out.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, please expose my hidden shadow self to me so I can apply Your word to my thinking and be the person You want me to be.
AMEN

True Thoughts

TODAY’S VERSE
Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
Philippians 4:8 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What we think can dictate the way we feel. Then our feelings affect our thinking and so the spiral goes. So much of what we believe at a rudiment level is false. Often, what we worry about, our self-talk, how we view ourselves, and our core beliefs about life are based on lies, half-truths, or erroneous assumptions. They enter our minds in stealth mode, and before we know it, we feel down. These lies go unchallenged and cause all sorts of havoc in our lives. Not only do we think of them, but we also make agreements with them. Soon, the stories we share over and over again about ourselves and life are based on these false beliefs. Paul says that there is a better way. He says we should bring these rogue thoughts to God. We must expose them to the light of the Holy Spirit and the word of God, which can guard our hearts and minds. In his book, “Learning To Tell Myself The Truth” William Backus shares, “Feelings follow your thoughts. Untruthful, negative thoughts lead to unpleasant feelings of anxiety, depression, or frustration, while truthful, positive thoughts create corresponding pleasant and upbeat feelings.—Your feelings can serve as an alarm to remind you to question your thoughts and beliefs. Are they negative or positive? Are they true or false? Once you’ve begun to identify the underlying thoughts and beliefs, you are on your way to healing, wholeness, and happiness.” Today, begin to follow Paul’s advice. When negative feelings come, “fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know my inner person. You hear my self talk better than I do. By the power of the Holy Spirit please alert me to my negative thinking and help me fix my thoughts on what is true. Help me think with faith in Your love and power, not damaging lies. In Jesus’ name.

Core Beliefs

TODAY’S VERSE
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:19 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Does it seem hard to believe some of the Scriptures? We read today’s passage, and if we listen closely, we can hear an inner dialog that starts to deny whether it is true or not. It may be, “Why should God help me?” “God didn’t help me last time.” It could be a muffled sound from a deeper level saying, “I don’t deserve His help.” “It will never work out.” These are lies that keep us from believing the truth of God’s love for us. I wish I could simply say, “Hey, stop believing a lie and believe the truth,” and everything would work out. But it isn’t that easy. You see, the core lies we believe about ourselves are believed emotionally and are hard to overcome. We have made agreements with them. Simply pointing out the lies we believe will not change anything. I need Jesus to tell me the truth about myself. He needs to help me hear the truth emotionally with authority; then, I will be free to destroy the lie and embrace the truth. Today, ask Jesus to point out destructive lies you believe about yourself. Bring those lies to Jesus and ask Him for the truth. The truth will set you free. Free to believe all that He has promised.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I am often hampered by lies I believe. My wounds, hurts, and strongholds have left me believing the wrong things. I need you to show me the lies and then speak the truth to my heart. Set me free Jesus, to accept the truth of who I am in Your eyes.

Spiritual Wisdom And Understanding

TODAY’S VERSE
We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding.
Colossians 1:9 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How different would our life be if we sought after and acquired the complete knowledge of God’s will for our life? But would that be enough? How many times have we known God’s will yet sat helpless to do anything about it? Jesus said to love our enemies. How easy is that? Perhaps that is why Paul also prayed that God would give us spiritual wisdom and understanding. If a complete knowledge of God’s will is the destination, then spiritual wisdom and understanding are the road map. It is how we get there. Today, ask God for His wisdom and understanding regarding His will for your life. He will guide you and direct your path.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I need Your wisdom and understanding regarding Your will for my life. I get easily distracted, confused, and discouraged. Fill me with Your Spirit and lead my path today. I pray in Jesus’ name.

Rejected Wisdom

TODAY’S VERSE
If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.
James 1:5-8

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There is a bitter truth in today’s verse. The truth is, often, we are just playing spiritual games with God. We come to a crossroads in life where we need to ask for wisdom. We go through the spiritual motion of wanting His wisdom, but as soon as the pressure is off and we think we are in the clear, we choose to go our own way again. Jeremiah puts it this way, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Stop at the crossroads and look around. Ask for the old, godly way, and walk in it. Travel its path, and you will find rest for your souls.’ But you reply, ‘No, that’s not the road we want!’” Or, as James suggests, we ask for wisdom, but all the while, we are still hanging on to what we want. We are torn between God and the world. We waver, and our worldly desire usually wins. How can we break this cycle? How can we understand God’s wisdom for our life and then follow it? I believe it happens when we fall down at His feet, tell Him the truth, ask for forgiveness, and then ask Him to direct, guide, and empower us to follow Him. It is by spending time with God, listening to Him, and accepting the guidance of His Holy Spirit. We follow Him one crossroad at a time. We live for Him, one request for wisdom at a time. We start to say “Yes” to Jesus one day at a time. Why not start today?

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, so often, I have good intentions. I want to follow you. I ask for wisdom. I come to the crossroad sincerely to go down the right road, and something happens. I get torn inside and start to doubt. I begin to waver, to be tempted to go another way, and pretty soon, I am far from the wisdom I so desperately sought. Help me, Lord, not to waver but to follow the wisdom you give me. Today, Lord, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name.

Wisdom And Understanding

TODAY’S VERSE
So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding.
Colossians 1:9 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What could you do with it? What would your life be if you had complete knowledge of God’s will combined with spiritual wisdom and understanding? Solomon encouraged us to seek wisdom as if it were gold. Paul goes a step further. He prays that God would give us the knowledge of His will. Do you pray for that? To know God’s will in the affairs of your life would change everything. To have the assurance of what He wants you to do would give you the confidence you need to live the life He wants you to. Having spiritual wisdom and understanding would help you when you are stuck and baffled by life’s ups and downs. Oh, to have His wisdom and understanding when you are tempted to believe lies about yourself, life, and God. How blessed you would be to have His gift of spiritual wisdom to discern between good and evil, right and wrong, truth and lies. If Paul prayed this for the church, you can pray it for yourself. Today do that. Ask God, and do not stop until He gives you spiritual wisdom, understanding, and the complete knowledge of His will.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Heavenly Father, the giver of all good things. I ask you for spiritual wisdom, understanding, and the knowledge of Your will. Guide me; direct me toward this end, I pray.

Pleasing Thoughts

TODAY’S VERSE
May all my thoughts be pleasing to him.
Psalms 104:34 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Just because we think something doesn’t mean it is good and pleasing to God. Lustful, hateful, immoral thoughts are wrong and need to be rebuked and replaced by the right kind of thinking. However, there are many seemingly “borderline” thoughts that we think that end up slipping right under the radar. We do not stop to consider whether or not these thoughts please God. They seem so normal, so right, and so natural. However, many of our fearful and doubtful thoughts stand as an affront to faith in God. He is not pleased. Jealous, bitter, and angry thoughts often dwell in our minds, and we never stop to consider God’s opinion on them. Negative self-beliefs stand against the truth of God’s love for us and the pride He has in us as His beloved creation. The Apostle Paul took our thoughts seriously and wrote, “We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.” Today, listen to what you are thinking. Repent of any thoughts that do not please God and replace them with those that do.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, help me catch my thoughts and examine them. Point out where I need correction. Father, I want to please you in everything I think and do. Help me I pray.

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What thoughts do you fix your mind on? It is so easy to believe negative things. We have a negative bias. Negative thoughts give way to more negative thoughts. Paul knows how to put a stop to it. Think about it. He was beaten, shipwrecked, stoned, put in prison. If anyone could have had an excuse to feel negative, it would have been him. Instead, he tells us to think about things that are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and worthy of praise! What a litmus test. Today, check your own thoughts. See if they pass the test. If not, stop! You can’t help what thoughts come into your mind, but you can do something about them once they are there. May God help us think on things that are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and worthy of praise!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, help me renew my thinking. I need your help so I can focus my thoughts on that which is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and worthy of praise!

True Transformation

TODAY’S VERSE
Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.
Romans 12:1 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Our Christian life is a renewal process. We should be constantly growing in our relationship with Christ. This life of transformation happens as we continuously renew our thinking through the power of the Holy Spirit. He has given us the Scriptures so we can grow in Him and be transformed by the renewing of our minds. But we must seek more than intellectual knowledge. We must let Him penetrate our mind and heart. Paul explains that true transformation also comes through experiential knowledge. He writes, “I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.” We are made complete with the fullness of life and power as we experience His love. Today, let God renew your mind, thoughts, and attitudes through His word and His love.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, renew me, transform me, change me more into the image of Your Son.
