TODAY’S VERSE
Stay here for now, and may the LORD help you keep your promise.
I Samuel 1:23 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We live in a world that doesn’t honor its word. This is especially true of a promise that was made with the wrong motives; a promise that is more like “let’s make a deal” than it is a serious commitment. We either want something and will manipulate with a promise in order to get it; or we try to avoid certain consequences and use promises as currency to buy our way out of trouble. But this is not the way Jesus taught us. He said to make our “Yes” a “Yes” and our “No” a “No”. Yes, it is easy to fail at keeping our promises even when we have the best of intentions. There are so many distractions, so many important things vying for our attention that we can begin to serve the “urgent” at the expense of the promises we made. Integrity is key to the Christian life and we need to repent when we stray from keeping our word. Today, let us repent of our unkept promises and recommit ourself to follow through on what we say we will do.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me keep my word. Help my “Yes” be a “Yes” and my “No” a “No”. Might I serve You by keeping my promises.
AMEN

TODAY’S VERSE
He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”
Matthew 26:39

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Obedience is not the absence of doubt or fear. It is an act of faith and trust. Jesus was a perfect example. He knew that His purpose was to be the sacrifice for the sins of the world. He also knew that His death would be an excruciating, painful ordeal. In His anguish He came to God His Father and asked if it was possible to let the suffering that He was to face be put off. But in the next breath, He chose to exercise the gut wrenching faith that you and I are called to follow. Against His circumstantial evidence, against His desire to be free from such terrific agony, He submitted Himself to His loving Father. His Father, our Almighty God, almighty in love, in knowledge and in power. Our Lord Jesus, modeled the faith and trust that you and I need in order to live the life God has for us. He prayed, “I want Your will to be done, not mine.” That’s it, isn’t it? That says it all. Faith and obedience come together. Love and trust intersect. What is it you are struggling with? What is it that you cannot understand? What difficulties have you at your wits’ end? Come to God. Follow Christ and in faith surrender yourself to your loving Father and pray what Jesus prayed, “Not my will Lord, but Your will be done.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, there are so many times that I don’t know what to do. I am so perplexed, so troubled, but today I choose faith. I choose You. I choose to trust Your love and pray that “Your will” be done in my life. In Jesus’ name I pray.

TODAY’S VERSE
“And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully.”
Ephesians 3:18-19

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Unconditional love. What a thought; better yet, when we realize it, what a reality! God loves us with no strings attached. But do we really believe that? Brennan Manning in his book Abba’s Child challenges whether we do or not. He writes, “It is one thing to feel loved by God when our life is together and all our support systems are in place. But what happens when life falls through the cracks? What happens when we sin and fail, when our dreams shatter, when our investments crash, when we are regarded with suspicion? What happens when we come face-to-face with the human condition?” If we are honest with ourselves, we would probably begin to doubt whether God could love us. Why is that? Could it be that we want something to do with our own salvation? Is it the cross plus our worthiness? Is it His death plus all the good things we have done? We need to pray what Paul prayed, that we would have the power to understand how much He really loves us. Manning wrote it this way, “Whether you understand it or not, God loves you, is present in you, lives in you, dwells in you, calls you, saves you and offers you an understanding and compassion which are like nothing you have ever found in a book or heard in a sermon.” May you really begin to believe and experience this reality.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for the fact that You love me unconditionally. Please give me the power to fully understand how deep Your love really is and the fact that it is a gift, not something I have to earn. Thank You for such an amazing truth. In Jesus’ name.

TODAY’S VERSE
“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 8:38-39

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Christ died on the cross to pay the penalty for your alienation from God. When you came to God and repented of your rebellion to Him and accepted His gift of eternal life, you became His child. You were what Jesus called “born-again!” This started you on a brand new life as a Christian, with a fresh relationship with God Almighty. As God’s child, the Bible is clear on the fact that you are loved by Him. This is the cornerstone of our Christian experience. Paul states it very clearly. He was emphatic that nothing can ever separate you from God’s love. In his book Abba’s Child Brennan Manning writes, “God created us for union with Himself: This is the original purpose of our lives. And God is defined as love (I John 4:16). Living in the awareness of our belovedness is the axis around which the Christian life revolves. Being the beloved is our identity, the core of our existence. It is not merely a lofty thought, an inspiring idea, or one name among many. It is the name by which God knows us and the way He relates to us.” If you believe nothing else today, believe this: God loves you! If you experience nothing else today, experience this: God loves you! If you let nothing else today bring you joy deep into your soul, get joy from this: God loves you! Nothing, nothing, nothing will ever be able to separate you from the love that God has for you!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I thank You for Your love. And I thank You that You promised that nothing will ever separate me from Your love. I accept Your love today and pray that I would live from a heart of gratitude and joy that I am Your beloved. In Jesus’ name.

The Father Loves You

TODAY’S VERSE
See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!
I John 3:1

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I don’t know how John could have contained himself when he wrote this verse. It has to be one of the most celebratory verses in the entire Bible. John understood the significance of being a child of God and implores us to understand it, too. With the excitement of a child on Christmas morning John exclaims, “See how very much our father loves us!” Can you see it? There are four points to notice. First, “how very much.” God’s love for us is unfathomable. John wants us to see and examine the concept that God loves us very much, and to really believe it. Second, is the phrase, “our.” John is getting personal. He isn’t talking about a God beyond our grasp, an impersonal Deity. Rather John is saying that this is “our” Father, which leads to the third point. God is our “Father.” Not a dysfunctional or absentee parent. He is our loving, faithful and trustworthy Father. Finally, John shares with us that this Father, who calls us His children, also “loves us” very much. Knowing this should change everything. When you love someone loves you, you trust them. You want to be with them. You want to share in their life. Today, I pray that you will grasp with the Apostle John, how wonderful it is to know that the Father loves you. Rest assured, you have been called “Child of God” and this is what you are!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, thank You for loving me and making me Your child. What a privilege to know You! What a joy to be Yours! May Your love fill my heart and guide my thoughts today. In Jesus’ name.

TODAY’S VERSE
For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him.
Psalms 103:11-13

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Guilt is an insidious emotion. The Psalmist knew this first hand. He wrote, “”I am dying from grief; my years are shortened by sadness. Sin has drained my strength; I am wasting away from within.” His sin had caused him much grief. It affected him emotionally and physically. Our misbehavior, our rebellion toward God, does the same to us today. Hundreds of studies have linked toxic emotions to physical disease. But it doesn’t have to be that way. God has provided a way for us to have freedom from guilt. It is through the forgiveness offered by the death of His son, our Lord Jesus Christ. The Apostle John wrote, “If anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous. He Himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins-and not only our sins but the sins of all the world.” Do you know this same Jesus as your personal Savior? Have you accepted His death on the cross as the penalty for your misdeeds? If so, you can say with the Psalmist that as high as the heavens are above the earth so your personal history, with all its pain and regret, is removed from God’s sight. They are as far as the east is from the west.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ for my sins. Thank You that when I confess and renounce any wrong doing, that You are swift to forgive and cleanse me. I thank You for Your unconditional love that takes all my guilt and casts it into the deep sea. I praise You for Your unbelievable grace You give to me. In Jesus’ name.

Confess

TODAY’S VERSE
“When I refused to confess my sin, my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long. Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me. My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat. Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt. I said to myself, ‘I will confess my rebellion to the LORD.’ And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone.”
Psalms 32:3-5

TODAY’S THOUGHT
David paints an accurate picture of someone who is under the hand of conviction. He wrote about the physical affect that guilt played on his body. But David did not allow it to stay that way. Instead, he confessed all his sins to God and experienced what John was talking about in I John 1:8-9, “If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.” The result of David’s confession was the joy of knowing that all his guilt was gone. How about you? Are you burdened with some nagging issue that you need to talk to God about? Have you been consumed with bitterness, anger, fear or worry that you need to repent of? Is the guilt that has separated you from God affecting your thinking, behavior and health? If so, repent. Confess and ask God to cleanse you and set you free. He will forgive you. He will restore your body, mind and soul.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, instead of dealing with issues in the way I should, I let them build up until they are sins festering in my soul and body. Show me today where I need to confess. Point out areas in my life that need forgiveness. Help me to live the life of freedom that You desire for me. Help me break free from this bondage of guilt. In Jesus’ name.

TODAY’S VERSE
How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these hidden faults. Keep your servant from deliberate sins! Don’t let them control me. Then I will be free of guilt and innocent of great sin.
Psalms 19:12-13 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We are complicated creatures. Paul explains our sin problem when he writes, “And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway.” The good news is that Christ has made a way that we can live for Him. Paul continued, “Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord.” He concludes, “There is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.” So today, thank our Lord Jesus for the forgiveness you have through His death and live in victory you have through His resurrection.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, thank You for Your Son Jesus, who died for me and rose again that I can be forgiven and set free from the bondage of sin.

TODAY’S VERSE
If I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.
I Corinthians 13:2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
God calls us to a higher kind of love. Not some sentimental romantic type of love, but a practical “walk your talk” kind of love. Paul defined it in his letter to the Corinthians when he wrote, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” The Apostle John goes farther and explains how living out our love in practical ways toward each other is the real proof that we know God. He wrote, “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” Today, commit yourself to knowing God by doing His will, love those around you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, help me follow You by loving the way You would have me love. In Jesus’ name.

TODAY’S VERSE
And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet.
John 13:14 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Humility is a very important part of our Christian experience. Christ has called us to follow Him and His is a way of love and selflessness. Paul wrote, “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!” Jesus said it best after washing His disciples feet, “And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet.” Today, humble yourself and be the servant Christ has called you to be.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord Jesus, I want to be Your servant. Help me have the same mindset of humility and servanthood that You do.
