Created To Do Good

TODAY’S VERSE
For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is amazing to study how the cells in the body all work together to survive as an organism. Insects work in hives, all working in unison. Systems throughout the universe are in motion, working in harmony. But then there is humanity. How dysfunctional can we get? It is every person out for their own self. This is not God’s desire. God created humans to exist in a system that has each of us looking out for the interests of others. He made love to be our model of coexistence. As Christians, God created us in Christ to do good works. The author of Hebrews writes, “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” And the world needs love in action. There are so many weary, hurting, broken, saddened, terrified people around us. Every family has a story. So today, volunteer. Just show up. Let God know you will be willing to help someone and then be available. He will lead you. He will guide you to someone who needs your help. And you will be blessed, for there is nothing better than doing what you were created to do. After all, you have been called by God Himself to do good works, which He prepared in advance for you to do!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, I know that You have created me to do good. I know it is Your desire, yet I need You to guide me. Please direct me to someone who needs what I have. Someone who will benefit from the way you have wired me. Guide me, then empower me to do the good that You have prepared in advance for me to do. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Joy and Compassion

TODAY’S VERSE
How joyful are those who fear the Lord and delight in obeying his commands. – They are generous, compassionate, and righteous. Good comes to those who lend money generously and conduct their business fairly.
Psalms 112:1, 4-5 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
God intended us for joy. And the Psalmist shows how to be that way. In his example of a joyful person, the author attributes joy to specific behavioral characteristics. He writes, “They are generous, compassionate, and righteous. Good comes to those who lend money generously and conduct their business fairly.” This is similar to what Jesus told us. He was asked, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” Jesus answered, saying, “The most important one is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” Tim Hughes, in his song, “God of Justice” writes it this way, “God of Justice, Savior to all – Came to rescue the weak and the poor, Chose to serve and not be served – Jesus, You have called us, Freely we’ve received, Now freely we will give – We must go, Live to feed the hungry, Stand beside the broken, We must go, Stepping forward keep us from just singing, Move us into action, We must go – To act justly everyday, Loving mercy in every way, Walking humbly before You God – You have shown us, what You require, Freely we’ve received, Now freely we will give – Fill us up and send us out.” And He does, He sends us out with joy!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me to see others the way You do. Help me see the joy in loving You with all my heart, soul, mind and strength and in loving others how I want to be loved. Lord, fill me with Your love and joy and send me out.
AMEN

Love One Another

TODAY’S VERSE
Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
I John 4:7-8 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How can we miss it? How could God make it any clearer? There is one central theme throughout the Bible, yet we don’t seem to get it. It is not optional. It is not a suggestion. When asked what the greatest commandment is, Jesus said it consisted of one thing! It was love. We are to love God with everything we have and to love our neighbor in the same way. John, the disciple who Jesus loved, says the same thing. He says that if we know God, we will love because God is love. God, Himself, set the example by giving the extreme example of love. He gave the life of His own son as a sacrifice for our own sins. How, then, can we argue with John’s conclusion? Might it be the theme for today, “Since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I need Your strength. I need Your power; I need Your heart in order to love the way You love. Help me to love all those that come my way today. Help me make love a priority in my life. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Compassion

TODAY’S VERSE
He made heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them. He keeps every promise forever. He gives justice to the oppressed and food to the hungry. The Lord frees the prisoners. The Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are weighed down. The Lord loves the godly. The Lord protects the foreigners among us. He cares for the orphans and widows, but he frustrates the plans of the wicked.”
Psalms 146:6-9 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How the Church has distorted the purpose of God in this world. We have made it all about us. Our worship of God, discipleship of our own, and the care of our people, buildings, and programs take top priority. Now, we are to worship Him. Indeed, God inhabits the praise of His people. We must disciple those who have come to faith in Christ. Christ Himself told us to go and make “disciples” of all nations. Finally, we must take care of the resources God has given us to use. But we have an incomplete picture of God’s purpose if we never consider the compassion He has toward those that are needy. We read many times in the gospels that Jesus was moved with compassion and then ministered in power. Likewise, we are woefully short of God’s purpose for the Church and scarce on His power, if we are not moved with compassion toward those outside our four walls.  The question is, will we join God in all of His work? God has called you and me to follow Him; let us follow Him by helping those around us who so desperately need our help.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me see the needs of others the way You do. Help me to respond in a way that honors you. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Doing Good Things

TODAY’S VERSE
For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever considered today’s verse before? It is quite profound. God said that you are His masterpiece, created to do good things! God is very aware of you and has begun a good work in your life. More than that, He will continue to work with you until His purpose for your life is complete. God did not make a mistake with your life. He did not waste His time creating you. He has a purpose that only you can fulfill. Only you have your combination of relationships, skills, passions, backgrounds, experience, knowledge, and opportunities. You are His masterpiece. Only you can answer God’s call on your life. He began a good work of salvation in your life so you can do the good work He wants to do with your life. Today, talk to God about your life. Seek His will, check your priorities and desires, and be about the good things He has called you to.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank you for making me new in Christ so I can do Your will with my life. I want to do Your will. Please guide, lead, and give me the strength and wisdom to do all you have created me to do. In Jesus’ name I pray.
AMEN

Christ’s Ambassador

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Christ has given us the task of reconciling people back to God. It is sharing with others that God will no longer count their sins against them when they become born again. Paul says it beautifully in today’s verse. He writes, “We are Christ’s ambassadors, with God making His appeal to mankind through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!”‘ But here is the catch. We need to say it in a heavenly language. It is a language of love. We feel if we just tell people that God loves them, they will get it. If we can just outmaneuver them intellectually, convincing them that God is their logical choice, it will all make sense to them. No, the kind of response that God stirs in a heart is emotional. It is emotionally knowing, that converts the soul. As we love those we come in contact with, loving them with the love of Christ, they can begin to believe in their heart that God will no longer count their sins against them. As we are empathic and loving unconditionally, they will hear our Heavenly Father saying, “Come back!” This is more than head knowledge. It is a real loving relationship that their weary soul is coming back to. May Christ help us become His ambassadors of love.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me share Your message of reconciliation with others. Not just with my words but with my actions. Might I represent You with real love so others may respond to Your appeal to “Come back to You.”
Amen

We Need To Walk The Talk

TODAY’S VERSE
What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.
James 2:14-18

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There is a world in such need, but we are so busy we don’t see it. We are so inwardly focused, so concerned about our welfare we don’t stop to help others. That is not the way of Christ! Our churches should be making huge differences in our communities, but we don’t. Often, we are trying to be the best church in the community. But the author, Eric Swanson, challenges us and says that we should try to be the best church for and with the community instead. That is Christ’s way. When will this change? It can change TODAY if you and I decide to do something. Today, we can make a difference in someone’s life by opening our eyes and hearts. We can encourage others in our church to make a difference. May God help us to “walk our talk.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord Jesus, help me see other peoples’ needs with Your eyes. Bring someone into my life today who needs help. Give me the mercy to stop, the wisdom to know what to do, and the love to do it. Thank You, God, for all You have done for me; help me do for others.
AMEN

Do His Work

TODAY’S VERSE
For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Ephesians 2:9 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
When was the last time you did something for the Lord? He loves you. He cares for you. God wants to work with you to do His will. Paul reminds us, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Doing His good works in His time and His strength is what we were created for. It is where we will be the most fulfilled. It is where we will have the greatest peace. Today, work with God. Find out what He wants you to do and join Him. Ask God to guide you, direct you and lead you. You were created to do His good works.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I realize that so much of what I have done has been on my own. Today I know that I am Your workmanship and that You created me to do Your good works. I ask You to take charge of my life. I invite you to guide me in all I do. I commit this day and all of its activities to You. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Your Work

TODAY’S VERSE
I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.
Philippians 1:6 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
God finishes what He started. And here is the good news, God started a good work in you! He began it before He created the world. The Bible says that you are His masterpiece created for His good works. Be encouraged, for you are a work in progress, and He is not finished with you yet! Seek His will. Get out of yourself and live for Him. Ask Him, “Lord what do you want me to do?” Remember, He has begun a work in you, He desires to continue it. Today, let Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, thank You for choosing me to work for You. Help me live out this Holy calling You have created me for. I give You my life, Lord, so please work in and through me for Your glory. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Loving Fellowship

TODAY’S VERSE
We sent him to strengthen you, to encourage you in your faith, and to keep you from being shaken by the troubles you were going through.
I Thessalonians 3:2-3 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Fellowship is critical to living our Christian life. Paul sent Timothy to the Thessalonians to encourage them in their faith and strengthen them. Godly fellowship can do that. How seriously do you take your responsibility as a brother or sister in Christ? How important do you see your role when it comes to those God has put in your life? Part of your responsibility as a disciple of Christ is to be Christ to those around you. You have an enormous God-given capacity to make a difference. God has put you in the lives of those around you so you can strengthen them, encourage them in their faith and keep them from being shaken by all the troubles they are going through. After all, isn’t that what God has done for you?

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, help me be conscious of those around me. Help me look for opportunities to encourage others in their faith, give them the strength to move on, and keep them from being shaken by all the troubles they are going through. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN
