Sincere Help

TODAY’S VERSE

Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.

Galatians 6:1-2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT

Much of the sin in our lives stems from our emotions. We get upset, worried, stressed, and emotional pain starts to build up. This leads us to sin. The solution is found in relationships. Relationships with God and other close friends provide us with the love, support, and comfort that can help tame our sinful behavior. It is in these deep relationships that Paul encourages you to gently and humbly help a person return to sanity and stop their negative behavior. How? By sharing their burdens and pain. By using a kind word, a listening ear, and a prayerful heart, your sincere help will help a person avoid acting out on their negative emotions. Your empathy and love will help keep them from committing grave relational sins. Today, ask God to help you share in someone else’s burden and restore them to a place of peace and joy.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Father, help me be there for other people. Help me share their burdens and gently bring them back to You. Thank You for Your grace and mercy extended to me. Help me do the same to others. In Jesus’ name.

Maturity

TODAY’S VERSE
Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly—mere infants in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready.
I Corinthians 3:1-2 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Paul was concerned about the maturity of the Corinth believers. Paul says that when we are new in Christ we should desire to be spiritually mature. After a while, we should be eating spiritual “solid” food not continuing to drink spiritual milk. A new believer needs to get grounded in faith, learn the fundamental truths, and practice the basic spiritual disciplines. However, as time goes by, like a newborn child grows and needs a more comprehensive meal, Christians should desire a deeper walk with God. Paul observed that the Corinth church was immature in their Christian walk. Their spiritual growth was stunted. How about you? How is your spiritual maturity? Can you look over the last year and say, “I know I have grown in Christ this year?” Have you read the Bible, spent time in prayer, and let God work with your personal habits? Has God made a difference in your emotional life? Do you see yourself as more mature in your relationships? There is so much to know and many areas to grow. Pray today that God will help you begin on a healthy spiritual diet so you will grow as a Christian.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I need to grow in You. Help my desire become a reality. Help me study Your word and talk to You in prayer. Help me be honest with You and then listen to what You say. I desire more of You and Your word. Feed me I pray. In Jesus’ name.

Joy and Compassion

TODAY’S VERSE
How joyful are those who fear the Lord and delight in obeying his commands. – They are generous, compassionate, and righteous. Good comes to those who lend money generously and conduct their business fairly.
Psalms 112:1, 4-5 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
God intended us for joy. And the Psalmist shows how to be that way. In his example of a joyful person, the author attributes joy to specific behavioral characteristics. He writes, “They are generous, compassionate, and righteous. Good comes to those who lend money generously and conduct their business fairly.” This is similar to what Jesus told us. He was asked, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” Jesus answered, saying, “The most important one is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” Tim Hughes, in his song, “God of Justice” writes it this way, “God of Justice, Savior to all – Came to rescue the weak and the poor, Chose to serve and not be served – Jesus, You have called us, Freely we’ve received, Now freely we will give – We must go, Live to feed the hungry, Stand beside the broken, We must go, Stepping forward keep us from just singing, Move us into action, We must go – To act justly everyday, Loving mercy in every way, Walking humbly before You God – You have shown us, what You require, Freely we’ve received, Now freely we will give – Fill us up and send us out.” And He does, He sends us out with joy!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me to see others the way You do. Help me see the joy in loving You with all my heart, soul, mind and strength and in loving others how I want to be loved. Lord, fill me with Your love and joy and send me out.

Contentment

TODAY’S VERSE
I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well-fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.
Philippians 4:12 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
These have always been hard verses for me to live. Paul could write them confidently because he poured out his life as a sacrifice for Christ. I look at my life and see so much to improve on. Today, I met someone who powerfully exemplified these words. Her name is Onix. She is in her mid-forties and has been in a wheelchair for most of her life. She did not let that stop her from graduating from Moody Bible Institute and becoming a youth leader instructor and gifted Sunday School teacher. She has always been a vibrant witness for Christ. For the last five years, she has suffered from a paralyzing disease. She has needed the help of a ventilator and has been bed-bound with only partial use of her hands. She had to reteach herself how to talk to continue to witness for Christ. A few years ago, she started to paint using her mouth to hold the brush. Onix glows as she talks about what she has learned about God through this and the opportunities she has to share her faith. Her faith is contagious. Her attitude is amazing. I pray that I will be able to pattern my life after her faith. Today, let us thank God for our circumstances. Let us live out the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well-fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or want.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for complaining. Forgive me for my lack of faith. Help me live content in the fact that I am Your child and You know all about me and my circumstances. Help me to see life through your eyes and trust Your never-ending love for me.

Love One Another

TODAY’S VERSE
Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
I John 4:7-8 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How can we miss it? How could God make it any clearer? There is one central theme throughout the Bible, yet we don’t seem to get it. It is not optional. It is not a suggestion. When asked what the greatest commandment is, Jesus said it consisted of one thing! It was love. We are to love God with everything we have and to love our neighbor in the same way. John, the disciple who Jesus loved, says the same thing. He says that if we know God, we will love because God is love. God, Himself, set the example by giving the extreme example of love. He gave the life of His own son as a sacrifice for our own sins. How, then, can we argue with John’s conclusion? Might it be the theme for today, “Since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I need Your strength. I need Your power; I need Your heart in order to love the way You love. Help me to love all those that come my way today. Help me make love a priority in my life. In Jesus’ name.

Compassion

TODAY’S VERSE
He made heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them. He keeps every promise forever. He gives justice to the oppressed and food to the hungry. The Lord frees the prisoners. The Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are weighed down. The Lord loves the godly. The Lord protects the foreigners among us. He cares for the orphans and widows, but he frustrates the plans of the wicked.”
Psalms 146:6-9 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How the Church has distorted the purpose of God in this world. We have made it all about us. Our worship of God, discipleship of our own, and the care of our people, buildings, and programs take top priority. Now, we are to worship Him. Indeed, God inhabits the praise of His people. We must disciple those who have come to faith in Christ. Christ Himself told us to go and make “disciples” of all nations. Finally, we must take care of the resources God has given us to use. But we have an incomplete picture of God’s purpose if we never consider the compassion He has toward those that are needy. We read many times in the gospels that Jesus was moved with compassion and then ministered in power. Likewise, we are woefully short of God’s purpose for the Church and scarce on His power, if we are not moved with compassion toward those outside our four walls.  The question is, will we join God in all of His work? God has called you and me to follow Him; let us follow Him by helping those around us who so desperately need our help.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me see the needs of others the way You do. Help me to respond in a way that honors you. In Jesus’ name.

Surrender

TODAY’S VERSE
Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires. Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God.
Romans 6:12-13 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Sometimes, we emphasize the wrong thing. We try to stop the darkness instead of turning on the light. We punish negative behavior and never reward what is done right. We save our money so tightly that we don’t spend money on great opportunities that come our way. It seems that Paul was going to do the same thing. He writes, “Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires. Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin.” Now, how hard is that? How joyful will that experience be? Don’t get me wrong, Paul is entirely correct! We must watch sin in our lives. We dare not get loose with our lives and live out sinful whims. But there is a better way. Paul finishes his thoughts by saying, “Instead, give yourselves completely to God.” How much better is that? There is real wisdom here, a real balance. If we give ourselves completely to God, will He not help us with the sin issue? Won’t the Holy Spirit guide and direct us toward a righteous life? It is like the old saying, “Love God and do as you please.” If we truly love God, we will only do what honors Him. So today, let’s combat sin in our lives differently. Let’s resist sin by completely giving ourselves and everything we do and think today to God.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come to You today and surrender to Your control. Guide me, direct me, help me live the way You want me to. I give myself completely to You.

Unity

TODAY’S VERSE
I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
John 17:23 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Unity is supposed to be the trademark of the Church. It is our community, love, and fellowship for all believers that should draw people to Christ. This was Jesus’ desire. He prayed that we would be one like He and His Father was one. He said, “May they (that’s the church) be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” What changes could we make in our corner of the world if each Church would work together to meet the needs of those around them? We have so much in common. We have the Bible, God the Father, Jesus His Son, and the Holy Spirit. We also have similar thoughts, feelings, and objectives, but we are never intentional about reaching out. Instead, we create our “Country Clubs Churches,” where similarity, status, and exclusiveness are our trademarks. How many churches never wander beyond their denominational boundaries? We need to work with other Christians and make a more significant impact, sending a tremendous message to the world. The Church needs this kind of diverse yet unified message if we want to reach the world. Today, may Jesus’ prayer be ours. “May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I confess that I have not reached out to other churches in love. I have not fellowshipped with other believers. I have not been active in pursuing relationships with those from different backgrounds as mine. Forgive me for not seeking unity. Help me to strive to bring Your message of love to the world through a unified church.

Doing Good Things

TODAY’S VERSE
For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever considered today’s verse before? It is quite profound. God said that you are His masterpiece, created to do good things! God is very aware of you and has begun a good work in your life. More than that, He will continue to work with you until His purpose for your life is complete. God did not make a mistake with your life. He did not waste His time creating you. He has a purpose that only you can fulfill. Only you have your combination of relationships, skills, passions, backgrounds, experience, knowledge, and opportunities. You are His masterpiece. Only you can answer God’s call on your life. He began a good work of salvation in your life so you can do the good work He wants to do with your life. Today, talk to God about your life. Seek His will, check your priorities and desires, and be about the good things He has called you to.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank you for making me new in Christ so I can do Your will with my life. I want to do Your will. Please guide, lead, and give me the strength and wisdom to do all you have created me to do. In Jesus’ name I pray.

You Can Make A Difference

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Paul took intercessory prayer seriously. He knew the effect of sincere, dedicated prayer on someone else’s behalf. He constantly prayed for the many churches he had planted and worked in. He tirelessly prayed for their needs, and God answered his prayers. Now Paul is thanking the Corinthians for praying for him and acknowledging that God was answering their prayers in mighty ways. We, too, can pray on behalf of others. We can pray for our family. Pray for our church. Pray for our neighbors and those we work with. We can pray for those who are suffering and in great need. We can pray for their provision, perseverance, and protection. We can pray for their salvation, guidance, and healing. Today, hear what Paul wrote and believe, “You are helping by praying!”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come today to pray for others. Help me as I intercede on their behalf. Help me pray the way You want me to with deep conviction and faith, believing that You answer prayers. Might You receive all the praise and glory. In Jesus’ name I pray.
