We Live By Faith, Not By Sight

TODAY’S VERSE
For we live by believing and not by seeing.
II Corinthians 5:7 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Faith can be hard. Even the disciples struggled with their faith. They were with Jesus. They saw Him every day, they saw the miracles, they heard the teachings, and yet, how many times did Jesus have to say, “Oh, you of little faith!” Thomas wouldn’t believe in the resurrection until he saw Jesus and the nail prints in His hands. So Jesus told him, “Thomas, you believe because you have seen with your own eyes. How blessed are they who believe and yet have not seen?” And that is our lot. We are called to believe without seeing. We live by faith. Paul writes, “Now we see things imperfectly as in a cloudy mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity.” We live in what John Wimber called the “here and not yet.” It means that the Kingdom of God has come to earth, but we are not in Heaven yet. The good news is, in this world, God has assured us that faith is enough. With faith, we can have hope and certainty. Paul concludes, “We live by believing, not by seeing.” Today, trust God. Put your faith in Him. Look at life with your spiritual eyes, and you will see that faith has a sight of its own.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for my lack of faith. Today I choose to put all my trust in You. Guide me, I pray.
AMEN

Remember

TODAY’S VERSE
Think back on those early days when you first learned about Christ.
Hebrews 10:32 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is easy to lose our confident trust in God. We get so wound up in our present situation that we forget God has been faithful over and over again. This is why the author of Hebrews warns us to remember what God has done in the past. He says, “Think back on those early days when you first learned about Christ.” Remember how you were full of joy over your salvation? Think back to the early years when you took God at His word and trusted Him for mighty things. What has changed? Has God? No! Perhaps you have become more cynical. Maybe you chalk off your early years as idealism, and today, you are more realistic about God’s involvement in your affairs. But beware, the author of Hebrews also wrote, “Do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord.” God is as alive today as He was when you first met Him. It is our cynicism that has changed. Instead, have patience and endurance. Put your faith in the God who is faithful to you. Trust Him today and continue to do His will.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me to remember all that You have done for me. Help me to remember Your faithfulness. Help me trust You more today.
AMEN

Love The Giver More Than The Gifts

TODAY’S VERSE
Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs.” – At this point many of his disciples turned away and deserted him. Then Jesus turned to the Twelve and asked, “Are you also going to leave?”
John 6:26, 66-67 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Sometimes we don’t get it. Our priorities get all mixed up. Like many who followed Jesus, we follow Him for the food and miracles. We want His blessings. We have the offer of a deep relationship with God, but instead, we seek the blessings. But what happens when blessings don’t come? What happens when the job we wanted doesn’t pan out, sickness interrupts our plans, and our children don’t act as we think they should? When our eyes are on our circumstances and not our creator, it is easy to get discouraged. We can lose hope and become bitter. Why? Because we have worshipped the gifts and not the giver, the blessings, and not the blesser. Today, we need to renew our love for God. Knowing Him is the real blessing. We need to love God, who alone is the source of our joy. No matter what circumstances come our way, we will find true peace and joy as we develop a relationship with God and truly love Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me love You today more than ever. Help me seek You more than Your blessings. Help me understand Your love for me and the incredible joy that is mine when I follow You.
AMEN

A Road Through The Sea

TODAY’S VERSE
Your road led through the sea, your pathway through the mighty waters—a pathway no one knew was there!
Psalms 77:19 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
This is from a Psalm written by Asaph. It is a Psalm where he spews out all his distress and frustration with God and the way his life was going. He says, “Has the Lord rejected me forever? Will he never again be kind to me? Is his unfailing love gone forever? Have his promises permanently failed? Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he slammed the door on his compassion?” And if we were honest, we would admit that there are times when we have thought the same thing. But something happened. Asaph started to remember all that God had done in the past and started to overlay that on the present and the future. As you would with a business that is going bad, you would look over the situation, remember business principles, apply them to your situation, and start to make corrections. Circumstances were horrible, but God’s love and power were the same. Asaph focused on all the good God had done and wrote, “Is there any god as mighty as you? You are the God of great wonders!” And then he remembered (I love this) that God led His people out of Egypt via a road, but not an ordinary road. No, a road that led through the Red Sea! A road no one would have ever thought of. That is the God we follow. That is the God we can trust in. He has a road for you. No matter how bad it looks, follow Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for complaining. So many times, I have forgotten how wonderful You are. I have forgotten about the Red Sea. Help me to trust You more. Today I commit to following the path You have for me.
AMEN

Just Remember

TODAY’S VERSE
Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me.
Psalms 103:2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is so easy to complain. It was the curse of the Israelites. God had miraculously taken them from the hardships of slavery, ending with the crossing of the Red Sea on dry ground! Yet what happened just a few days later? They complained to God about the harsh circumstances of the wilderness, railing against God and saying that they would instead return to Egypt and be slaves again. I used to read this story in the Old Testament and judge them. But then I started to listen to myself. Oh my. How often do I complain? How critical does my spirit become? How quickly can I give up on something God has called me to? I find it easy to let bitterness become deeply rooted in my soul. Envy and jealousy quickly begin to rot away at my joy. Thankfully, David suggests a cure. The way to keep from complaining or being bitter and ungrateful is to remember all the good things God has done. It is more complicated than it seems. We have a natural tendency to have critical thoughts. To overcome our critical tendencies, we must be purposeful in remembering God’s goodness, meditating on all that He has done for us, and praising Him from the depths of our being. May we never forget all the good things God has done for us.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I am thankful for all you have done for me. Praise You God. Let all that is in me praise Your Holy name. Help me never to forget all the good things You have done for me.
AMEN

BHAG For Your New Year!

TODAY’S VERSE
With God’s help we will do mighty things.
Psalms 103:13 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
In his book, “Good To Great,” Jim Collins introduced us to BHAG. This stood for “Big Hairy Audacious Goals.” Companies that went from being good to being great had larger-than-life goals. Stretch goals that shape a company into driving economic success. Thousands of years earlier, David spread the same philosophy among his countrymen. God is the God of the impossible, and we do Him no service by thinking small. When Jesus, who lived a life full of miracles and wonders, was about to leave this earth, said that He had to leave so The Holy Spirit could replace him. Jesus told His disciples that the Holy Spirit would guide us and lead us, and then He made this incredible promise, “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!” Today, examine your heart. What have you asked God to do? What BHAG could God have for your church, your company, your family, or your life in this new year? Join David and believe, “with God’s help we will do mighty things.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Almighty God, it’s not about me. It’s not about my fame or what I can accomplish. It is about Your glory, Your will, and all the healing needed in this world. I ask for big, audacious goals for Your kingdom in this coming new year! What is it You would have me do? Guide me, Lord, and help me join You in Your mighty works. I pray this, Jesus, in Your name.
AMEN

Remember God’s Grace

TODAY’S VERSE
I do not treat the grace of God as meaningless.
Galatians 2:21 (NLT)

TODAY’S PRAYER
It is easy to take life for granted. How often do we wake up in the morning and go through our day complaining, moaning, and bitter over life, forgetting all the good things that we have? How about people? How many times do we treat those who love us as if they were nothing special? We start to take advantage of their faithfulness and love for us. How often do we do this with God? We do precisely what Paul said that we should not do. We treat the grace and love of God as if they were meaningless. We live as if God didn’t exist. Paul knew too well that with our humanness, our bent toward rebellion, that sooner or later we would forget. And so he made a conscious effort not to treat the grace of God with disrespect. Paul fought spiritual pride and his bent toward entitlement. He did this by being purposeful in the way he lived. We can do the same. The best way to be faithful to your wife is to be purposeful in loving her. Likewise, we will refrain from treating God’s grace disrespectfully by being intentional in our relationship with Him. Today remember. Remember all that God has done for you. Remember His grace, faithfulness, forgiveness, and unconditional love toward you. Worship Him, praise Him, surrender your will to His control. Dedicate this day and all your days to His service. Humble yourself before Him and remember who you are without Him. May we join Paul and never treat the grace of God as meaningless.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, how You have lavished Your grace on me. How You have forgiven all my sin. How You have rescued me over and over again. Forgive me for forgetting. Forgive me for my disrespect and for taking You for granted. Today, I come and worship You and praise You for Your grace toward me. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Don’t Forget

TODAY’S VERSE
“If only the LORD had killed us back in Egypt,’” they moaned. “There we sat around pots filled with meat and ate all the bread we wanted. But now you have brought us into this wilderness to starve us all to death.”
Exodus 16:3

TODAY’S THOUGHT
One month after the Lord had delivered them from the hand of Pharaoh, the children of Israel found themselves in a desert. Did they remember the mighty miracles that God used to deliver them from slavery? Did they remember the dry ground they walked on that was once covered by the Red Sea? No, they forgot and complained to Moses that they would have been better off back in Egypt! What about our human nature causes us to forget good things so quickly? Charles Spurgeon said, “I don’t know which to marvel more at, God’s faithfulness or man’s forgetfulness.” Why is this so important? Because remembering is vital to our survival. God teaches us life lessons that are needed later in life, but our propensity is to forget. The lesson for the Israelites would be, “Don’t forget in the desert what you learned at the Red Sea.” What about you? Do you remember how faithful God has been to you in the past? Today, stop and remember all that God has done for you. Remember His faithfulness. Remember His provision. Remember His presence in times past and go forward in the reality that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for my forgetfulness. Instead, Lord, help me remember all that You have done and all that You have promised. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Remember

TODAY’S VERSE
Oh, how often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved his heart in that dry wasteland. Again and again they tested God’s patience and provoked the Holy One of Israel.
Psalms 78:40-41 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There is a sad truth that comes with our maturing process. That is the fact that we can be stubborn and insensitive to the things of God. The Psalmist is pointing out that the children of God constantly forgot all the good that God was doing and consequently were unappreciative of all He did for them and disrespectful of the way God wanted them to live. The author writes, “They did not remember his power and how he rescued them from their enemies. They did not remember his miraculous signs in Egypt, his wonders on the plain of Zoan.” This had a drastic effect on how they lived. I read where the famous preacher, Charles Spurgeon once said, “I don’t know what to marvel at more. God’s faithfulness or man’s forgetfulness!” Today, let us not grieve God’s heart. Let us not test the Lord. Instead, let us remember all He has done for us and be thankful for all His love and grace He has lavished upon us.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, forgive me for forgetting what You have done for me. Forgive me for rebelling against Your ways. Help me to remember Your goodness and grace and to live the way You want me to.
AMEN
