Love Not Fear

TODAY’S VERSE
I, yes I, am the one who comforts you. So why are you afraid of mere humans?
Isaiah 51:12 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What is the opposite of “love”? Our first answer would no doubt be “hate.” I used to think so. However, the longer I live, the more I believe “fear” is the opposite of love. True, if I am going to “act” the opposite of love, it would be to hate. But if I am going to “live” the opposite of love, it would be to live in fear! Fear keeps me from love’s reality. Fear tells me that the promises of love are nothing but lies. Fear chooses to doubt love’s sincerity. Worse, it doubts the lover. When I choose to believe fear, it means I have chosen not to believe God. He says, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” And yet I act as if I will be abandoned, all alone with God nowhere in sight. I need to start seeing God as God. How about you? Do you live in the reality of His love? He is the one who comforts you. He is the one who will never leave you. He is the one who will never stop loving you. Today, believe it, rejoice in it, live as if it is true. It is.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I confess I live much of my life in quiet desperation. Fear is always challenging my belief in Your love for me. Today, I renounce that fear. I rebuke it in Jesus’ name and choose to believe in Your love for me.
AMEN

Sufficient

TODAY’S VERSE
Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
II Corinthians 12:8-9 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I don’t understand suffering. Pain, heartache, sadness seem so antithetical to the love, joy, and peace that we claim is the Christian experience. I don’t understand why our first and only stop isn’t Heaven instead of earth. But here we are, and in this world, we do have tribulation. All of us have crosses to bear. In his book, “Desiring God’s Will,” Dr. Benner writes, “We experience good and bad in our childhood. But Jesus’ invitation is to accept the givens of our lives and follow Him. We experience love and betrayal in our marriages and friendships. But Jesus’ invitation remains the same, to accept the givens and follow Him. – We want to either fight against the suffering or ignore it. What Jesus asks is something quite different. – We can choose to acknowledge the suffering rather than ignore it. And while holding it, we can choose to look toward God. If we do, we discover God looking toward us.” The mystery in all of this is God’s grace. Grace stands between us and our pain. It is the salve for our breaking heart. It is the presence of God amid our darkness. It is the strength in our weakness. God promises it will be sufficient. He promises. Today, don’t turn away. Quit running. Lay down your burden and follow Christ. He is sufficient.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come to You. Only You can be my strength. Only You can give me the grace I need. I look to You, dear God, for You promised, Your grace will be sufficient.
AMEN

God’s Love

TODAY’S VERSE
But you, O Lord, are a God of compassion and mercy, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.
Psalms 86:15 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
David is worshiping God and thanking Him for His compassion and mercy. He praises God for being filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. David knew this; he believed it; he felt it deep in his heart. What about you? Do you understand how much God loves you? The God we believe in is the same God that David is referring to, but is it possible that your heart cannot seem to grasp the reality of His love? Does the thought of His unconditional love seem foreign to you? You know it in your mind but not in your heart. Do you find yourself feeling that you must please God to earn His love? Deep inside, do you fear that if God really knew you, He would never love you? Listen, here is the truth. God does know you, and He fully loves you. He doesn’t see you as an abandoning father does. He doesn’t put demands on you like an evil stepmother. From the time you were thought of by God, He has loved you. You don’t have to earn it, and you can’t lose it. Today, you can say deep in your heart the same prayer that David prayed, “God is full of compassion and mercy, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me understand the depths of your love for me. Help me grasp your compassion, embrace your mercy, and begin to see that your love and faithfulness are unfailing. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Mighty Things

TODAY’S VERSE
With God’s help we will do mighty things.
Psalms 108:13 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Hope can go a long way in helping us through this life. But this was more than hope. It was more than a belief. It was an expectation! David, though he was a humble shepherd boy, knew that with God’s help, he would do mighty things. It was this belief that helped him overcome Goliath. It was this belief that made him a mighty King. David’s belief in God doing mighty things caused him to start the Psalm by writing, “My heart is confident in you, O God.” It was this confidence that motivated him to get up in the morning and saw him through the day. It was his confidence in the power and love of God that got him through the tough parts of life that he faced. He knew that God would help him do mighty things. How has knowing God changed your expectations? What mighty things are you trusting God for? Today, put your hope in God. He loves you and desires to do incredible things in your life. With God’s help, you will do mighty things.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me believe You for mighty things today. I pray that Your Holy Spirit will give me a vision worthy of Your power. Indeed, with Your help, dear Lord, I will do mighty things.
AMEN

The Grace, Love, and Fellowship of God

TODAY’S VERSE
May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
II Corinthians 13:14 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The grace of Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the fellowship with our Holy God’s Spirit. Does it get any better than this? The three keys to life are all found in our Christian experience. The grace of Jesus Christ. Grace, the ability of Christ to see us as we are and because of His death on the cross, is able to extend unmerited favor upon us, forgiving us, cleansing us, and making us whole. The love of God the Father. Love from the one who is love. Perfect love. Unconditional love. Unfathomable love. Unending love. The fellowship of the Holy Spirit. The comforter has come, and He brings a fellowship sweeter than life itself. A deep relationship, teaching us of truth, judgment, and righteousness. A fellowship that results in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. He guides us, protects us, comforts us, teaches us, and leads us. Today, you can avail yourself of all of this. This is the normal Christian experience that God desires you to have. Today, ask Him to make you keenly aware of the grace of Christ, the love of God the Father, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. Ask God to make it real, deep in your heart.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me see and understand, deep in my heart, what it means to be filled with the grace of Jesus, the love of the Father, and the fellowship with the Holy Spirit. I desire to know this in all its fullness. In Jesus’ Name.
AMEN

Be Still Before Him

TODAY’S VERSE
Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him.
Psalms 37:7 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How much time do you spend meditating in the presence of God? That is to stop everything and spend time before Him. This is more difficult than it seems. It does not matter if you have read the Bible for four weeks or decades; you may know all about God but still not spend much time experiencing Him. Your knowledge may be in your head never making it into your heart. You will never honestly know what it means to love God without spending meditative time talking with and listening to God in His presence. That is like saying you love your spouse, yet never spend time together. God is interested in us knowing Him through the Scriptures, but He also desires a relationship that only comes through “being” in His presence. Today, determine to know Him better. Choose some time when you can be in solitude with Him. Don’t let another day, week, month, or year go by without treasuring God in your heart through time spent still before Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I know that one of the purposes You have for me in this life is to know You. Help me carve out the time to be “still” before You. Help me learn to embrace Your presence and enjoy union with You in time spent together. I ask this in Jesus’ Name.
AMEN

Unconditional Love

TODAY’S VERSE
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. — For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:1, 38-39 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is so hard for me to accept the love that God has for me. I want to believe that He loves me with unconditional love and then I slip up. I fail to do something right, make a mistake, get someone mad at me, and my life starts to unravel. The lies begin to fill my head, and I find myself hopelessly lost in a system of “works” that has gone awry. A tyrannical voice banishes me to annihilation. After all, I have fallen from perfection. Does this sound extreme? For so many, it is not. We strive for perfection, saying God loves us, but in reality, we do everything we can to make sure He will love us. We fear that He will reject us if we commit the “unforgivable sin.” The sad truth is, in our perfectionist mindset, every sin is unforgivable. We need to see this for what it is–a lie straight from the pit of Hell itself. The truth is, there is nothing we can do to have Jesus love us one ounce more. At the same time, there is nothing we can do to have Jesus love us one ounce less! Paul’s declaration cuts through our chains, “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus!” Let the truth of today’s passage set us free—nothing, not even our own mistakes, can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Today, settle it once and for all. Accept the unconditional love that God has for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Thank You, dear Jesus, for Your death and resurrection. Thank You for becoming the sacrifice for my sin. Thank You for Your salvation and Your unconditional love for me.
AMEN

Help Me Trust And Rejoice

TODAY’S VERSE
Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior.
Habakkuk 3:17-18 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What qualifications do you put on happiness? So many times, we put conditions on whether we will rejoice. We must be liked. We must be successful. We have to have the right kind of car, house, clothes, or social status before we can find happiness. But what happens if those things that we feel are so important to “who we are” are taken away? What if we lose our jobs or a friendship tanks, or we face bankruptcy? What if we are falsely accused of something or our friends turn on us? Then what happens to our peace, joy, or happiness? Somehow, Habakkuk found the secret. It was in his relationship with God. He was able to rejoice in Him no matter what. He had committed himself to God, and when troubles began to brew, he could trade his commitment for trust. Finally, when times were at their worst, his trust allowed him to return to joy from painful situations. This joy came from a deeply trusting relationship with God. Listen to what he said, “Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior.” That joy and trust didn’t happen by accident. Habakkuk had a relationship with God that he could return to over and over again. Today, begin with trust. Trust Him with everything you have and everything you need. Trust Him with today, tomorrow, and the future. Then, when you need it, just like Habakkuk, your trust will help you return to joy.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me to trust You in all things. Help me to put my hope in You. Help me to rejoice in You no matter what happens. I pray this in Jesus’ name.
AMEN

His Grace Is Sufficient

TODAY’S VERSE
But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you.”
II Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I never get used to God’s grace! Grace is God’s “unmerited favor” toward us who believe. In other words, He lavishes His love on you and me for no other reason than He “wants to.” His love is perfect. God’s grace is His purposeful manifestation of perfect love toward us. Paul came upon a tremendous burden in his life and sought relief from God, but instead of getting his request, God told him, “My grace is sufficient for you!” He asked for relief from a situation, but he got so much more. He received grace from God that was sufficient to meet his every need. In his classic book, “Addiction and Grace” Gerald May writes, “Grace is the invincible advocate of freedom and the absolute expression of perfect love. – For Christians, grace is the dynamic outpouring of God’s loving nature that flows into and through creation in an endless self-offering of healing, love, illumination, and reconciliation. It is a gift that is often given in spite of our intentions and errors. At such times, when grace is so clearly given unrequested, uninvited, even undeserved, there can be no authentic response but gratitude and awe.” Today, may you be conscious of His grace toward you. May you sense it in His attention, mercy, peace, strength, and love He directs toward you. Today, might you truly hope in this, His grace will indeed be sufficient for whatever will come your way.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, how amazing is Your grace! Thank You that no matter what comes my way today, You promised that Your grace toward me will be sufficient enough to see me through. I praise You for Your grace of love, of forgiveness, of mercy, of peace, of joy, of strength, and of provision. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Offering

TODAY’S VERSE
Accept my prayer as incense offered to you, and my upraised hands as an evening offering.
Psalms 141:2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There are many things you can do with your life. You have skills, knowledge, and experiences that will afford you many different and unique occupational opportunities. However, there is one vocation that God has put in the hearts of all who follow Him. It does not require skill, special knowledge, certain aptitudes, or pedigree. It only requires a heart that loves God. He has called you to be a Priest. You have been given the sacred privilege to come before God in humble adoration. Dressed in a robe, cleansed by the blood of Jesus Himself, you stand before God, forgiven and accepted as His child. There you are before God, your prayers received by Him as an incense offering, bringing Him extreme pleasure. As you praise Him, your hands reach up to Him in a Holy embrace, received as an offering of love and praise. There is nothing God desires more. No offering has ever been so precious to God as your adoration, praise, and prayers. Come today as God’s Priest and offer Him your love. Come into His presence, love Him, talk to Him, adore Him – it is your sacred privilege.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come before You now with a humble heart. Hear my prayers. Receive them as a sacred offering. I lift up my hands to You in love and adoration. Please accept my praise as a Holy sacrifice to You in all Your majesty. I worship You today as my Lord and my God.
AMEN
