Word and Power

TODAY’S VERSE
Jesus replied, “Your mistake is that you don’t know the Scriptures, and you don’t know the power of God.
Matthew 22:29 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Oops! How many times has that happened? We live under a particular assumption, do all kinds of things, only to find out that we have it all wrong! Assumptions do that. They can lead us down the wrong road. A road full of wild emotions and deep regret. Not just assumptions, misguided beliefs can also take us on the wrong journey. So it was with those who were trying to debate Jesus and trick Him into contradicting their traditions. Two things Jesus pointed out were both mistakes. One, they did not know the scriptures. They thought they did. They knew the words but not the intentions. They knew the law but not the grace. They knew the letter but not the spirit. God’s intention has always been to bring life, love, and grace to humankind. If you do not know that, you do not know the scriptures. Secondly, they did not know the power of God. They knew the stories in the scriptures, but not the reality. They knew about God but not the power of God. They believed in death, but not in God’s power to give eternal life. Don’t make the same mistake. Today, choose to believe. Get to know the reality behind every page of the scriptures. Get to know God and all the power He has for your life.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me get to know You. Help the scriptures come alive in my life. Help me live in the power of Your resurrection. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

His Presence

TODAY’S VERSE
Now I can walk in your presence, O God, in your life-giving light. Psalms 56:13 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever wondered what it would have been like to be Adam and Eve? They had a personal relationship with God. They met with Him every day and lived in His presence. Though they disobeyed God and changed the world forever, we still have an opportunity to fellowship with God. David knew this. As a shepherd boy, he would spend his nights under the stars and sing to God. As he grew, he became “a man after God’s own heart.” David knew what it meant to walk with God. He admitted, “Now I can walk in your presence, O God, in your life-giving light.” He realized that there was nowhere he could go, no situation he could be in that would take Him outside of God’s presence. We, too, can have that same reality. God bids us come and fellowship with Him. He desires for us to live in His life-giving light. Today, stop and realize that you are in the very presence of God. Better yet, remind yourself that His presence lives in you! Rejoice and walk with Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your abiding presence. Today I choose to walk in Your life-giving light.
AMEN

Love Not Fear

TODAY’S VERSE
I, yes I, am the one who comforts you. So why are you afraid of mere humans?
Isaiah 51:12 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What is the opposite of “love”? Our first answer would no doubt be “hate.” I used to think so. However, the longer I live, the more I believe “fear” is the opposite of love. True, if I am going to “act” the opposite of love, it would be to hate. But if I am going to “live” the opposite of love, it would be to live in fear! Fear keeps me from love’s reality. Fear tells me that the promises of love are nothing but lies. Fear chooses to doubt love’s sincerity. Worse, it doubts the lover. When I choose to believe fear, it means I have chosen not to believe God. He says, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” And yet I act as if I will be abandoned, all alone with God nowhere in sight. I need to start seeing God as God. How about you? Do you live in the reality of His love? He is the one who comforts you. He is the one who will never leave you. He is the one who will never stop loving you. Today, believe it, rejoice in it, live as if it is true. It is.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I confess I live much of my life in quiet desperation. Fear is always challenging my belief in Your love for me. Today, I renounce that fear. I rebuke it in Jesus’ name and choose to believe in Your love for me.
AMEN

Worship

TODAY’S VERSE
But as for me, I will sing about your power. Each morning I will sing with joy about your unfailing love. For you have been my refuge, a place of safety when I am in distress.
Psalms 59:16 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
A flower doesn’t have a choice. Every morning, its beauty glorifies God. The sunset, mountain vista, and ocean waves all give praise to God without pause or consternation. But not so with us. We must make a choice. And as honored as God is by the glory of this world’s natural creation, how much more joy it must bring Him when we make praise and worship a free choice of our will. David made it his choice. He decided to sing of God’s power. He made it a point to sing of God’s unfailing love every morning, even when he was under great duress. He writes, “But as for me, I will sing about your power. Each morning I will sing with joy about your unfailing love. For you have been my refuge, a place of safety when I am in distress.” Today, what will you sing? What will you say to Him who is your refuge? You have a choice: choose to praise and worship Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, how I thank You for all You have done for me. I come now to worship You for all Your love. I praise You for mighty power. You alone are worthy of all my honor. In Jesus’ name I pray.
AMEN

God’s Will Be Done

TODAY’S VERSE
May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Matthew 6:10 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The disciples came to Jesus and asked Him to show them how to pray. Jesus shared with them what is now known as the “Lord’s Prayer.” In the prayer, He says, “May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.” Notice Jesus did not say, “God, may my will be done on earth.” So often, that is how we are tempted to pray. Instead, Jesus teaches us to align our desires with God the Father. In “Desiring God’s Will,” Dr. David Benner writes, “The prayer that comes most naturally for all of us is ‘My name be hallowed, my kingdom come, my will be done.’ This is a prayer of independence and willfulness. It is the liturgy of the kingdom of self. The prayer that goes against our nature and that can become our prayer only through the action of divine grace is the Lord’s prayer. It inverts everything in the liturgy of the kingdom of the self – ‘Thy name be hallowed, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done.’ It is a prayer of surrendered autonomy and willingness. It is the liturgy of the kingdom of God.” Today, attune your heart with God. Pray for wisdom, discernment, and align your request with His will. Then we can pray, “May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I ask that You would help me discern Your will for my life. Help me align my joys, desires, and will with Yours, I pray.
AMEN

Thinking

TODAY’S VERSE
Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.
Romans 8:5 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
“What were you thinking?” Have you ever had anyone ask you that? Usually, it’s after something goes wrong. There was a misjudgment, and your thinking has been questioned. But Paul is suggesting something different. He says we should be purposeful before we think and watch what we let dominate our minds. Paul indicates that it is either the Spirit of God or our sinful nature. What a world of difference the two mindsets have on our lives. The mind dominated by the sinful nature leads to sinful thinking and behavior. The mind controlled by the Spirit of God leads us to do what pleases the Spirit. Today, say “No” to the sinful nature with its temptation and lust. Instead, be controlled by the Holy Spirit

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I want to live my life for You. Let Your Holy Spirit control my thinking. I give You my mind; guide me, direct me, lead me into Your will.
AMEN

Trusting God

TODAY’S VERSE
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. – By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.” Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.
Hebrews 11:1, 17-19 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How great is God’s patience toward us! How long-suffering He is with us. He knows how weak we are. He knows how scared, bruised, and weary we can get. So often, our faith weans in His presence. Our disappointments, fears, and doubts keep us from trusting Him. And yet His love patiently waits. He knows that “confidence” and “assurance” is a growth process. Today’s passage is a tremendous testimony to Abraham’s faith. He trusted God even while he lifted his knife to sacrifice his only son. What is so amazing is that this was the same man who almost gave up his wife’s fidelity when he told Pharaoh that Sarah was his sister. Why? Because he was afraid, he did not trust God. He was the same man who had a child with his wife’s handmaiden. Why? Because he did not believe God would bring about the son that He had promised. Oh, the love of God, to patiently show more of Himself over a lifetime to Abraham so he would grow in confidence, and that his assurance of God’s faithfulness would increase. As a result, it was recorded of Abraham for all the ages, “Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead.” Today, do not despair; God is not finished with you yet. Get back up and let God grow in you a deep confidence and absolute assurance.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Oh Father of Abraham, how I pray that you would grow in me a deep confidence and absolute assurance of You and Your love for me. I believe, Lord, but help my unbelief. Increase my faith that I would be a living testimony of your power and faithfulness. In Jesus’ name I pray.
AMEN

Doing God’s Will

TODAY’S VERSE
Do the will of God with all your heart.
Ephesians 6:6 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
You can do something half-heartedly, or you can give your total self to it. You can participate in something out of sheer obedience or because you are deeply passionate about it. Paul was asking the church members to do God’s will, but not just do it, do it with all their hearts. In his book, “Knowing God’s Will,” David Benner writes, “Only love was capable of empowering Jesus to choose God’s will over his own when faced with the agony of death. – Spiritual disciplines that emerge simply as acts of the will are likely to be self-serving and legalistic. What God desires is external actions that spring from inner longings for relationship and intimacy, for this is His desire for us. This was what the Father found in the heart of Jesus. And it is the motive that we can find in our life as we follow Jesus and live in His Spirit.” Today, ask God to birth in you a fresh desire to follow Him, deep love and intimacy with Him that directs the way you live. Today, “do the will of God with all your heart.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me know You more and more so that I develop a more profound love for You. Then enable all my actions to come from the love that you birth in my heart.
AMEN

Comfort

TODAY’S VERSE
All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles.
II Corinthians 1:3-4 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Comfort is only as good as its source. The word comfort means to “come next to.” The best comfort comes from someone who has the power to comfort you. Like the police officer who says, “You are safe now.” The Doctor who says, “Your test came back negative, you will be okay.” Paul is encouraging the early church to be comforted because God is the source of our comfort. He writes, “All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles.” Are you troubled today? Come next to God and let Him comfort you. Are you weary and don’t know what to do? Move toward God, lean upon Him, and let Him wrap you in His arms. He will comfort you. Are you at the end of yourself, too frozen to move? Turn your head in His direction, whisper with your thoughts, and He will hear you. He is the merciful Father and the source of all comfort. Today, come next to Him and be comforted.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I am coming next to You. I need Your arms; I need Your face, I need Your voice. Comfort me, dear merciful Father, of all comfort. Strengthen my arms, give courage to my legs, and help lift my head up. Here I am, comfort me, I pray.
AMEN

He Is There

TODAY’S VERSE
Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
Jeremiah 29:12-13 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever been lost? Imagine if you were hiking, and all of a sudden, you realize you don’t know where you are? You have no map or compass and don’t know how to get to where you want to go—what a helpless feeling. Picture your joy when someone sees you and asks if they can help. They take out a map, explain where you are, and show you the way to your destination. What a relief. Isn’t that how it is when we get emotionally lost? We are running from day to day. We overreact, panic, and without help, we eventually become emotionally frozen. How great then is our joy when we hear the words of our Lord, “You will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” We don’t have to wander in our emotional wilderness. We don’t have to remain lost in all our madness; God is here. He will listen, He will show us the way. He promises! We will find Him when we seek Him with all our hearts. Today, cry out to God, seek Him, He is there.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come today, crying out for You. I am seeking You, Lord, with all my heart. Hear my prayer, make Your presence known to me as You have promised. Guide me, lead me, comfort me with Your Holy Spirit, I pray.
AMEN
