God’s Word

TODAY’S VERSE
I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.
Psalms 119:11 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Insight, inspiration, hope, wisdom, confidence, direction, correction, all this and more are found in God’s word. One of the roles of the Holy Spirit is to take the scriptures and make them relevant to our lives. The Psalmist experienced this living word and knew that if He would learn it, meditate on it, and let it affect who he was, it would result in the kind of behavior that was pleasing to God. Today, we can have the same experience. Spend time in God’s word. Meditate on it. Listen to what God has to say and let His word take root deep within your heart. If you do, you will be able to say with the Psalmist, “I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, as I read Your word, help it sink deep into my heart. Help me hear You and understand how You want me to live. Inspire me, guide me, and empower me by Your word, I pray.
AMEN

Truth

TODAY’S VERSE
Therefore, put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist.
Ephesians 6:13-14 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Interestingly, when God chose to warn us about Spiritual Warfare and described the armor of God, the first piece He told us of was the “belt of truth.” Truth is crucial to have spiritual victory. Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” More and more information is being dumped on us all the time. It is impossible to keep up with all the new information. If we are not careful, we will become spectators of the truth. We will choose truth without an absolute allegiance. We will lose the reverence for truth. Worse, albeit subtly, we will believe two opposites are true simultaneously. So when I am in church, I will sing like I truly believe (And I may honestly believe), but on Monday, I live at work as if God never existed. I deny Christ as any authority in my life. Today, we must recommit ourselves to the truth. We must dig into the word of God, ask God to speak to us, and hold on to the truth as if our lives depended on it. Let us put on the armor of God and stand firm with the belt of truth buckled around our waist.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I know I am in a spiritual battle and need to know, believe, and live the truth. Help guide me to be strong in Your mighty truth as I pray, meditate, and follow Your lead.
AMEN

Shine The Light

TODAY’S VERSE
You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
As Christ-followers we have a Holy purpose! We are part of a Holy Mission. Evil forces have invaded the earth’s domain leaving humanity in darkness. Yet God, in His mercy, has called you and me to bring the light to the world. Each of us to the part of the world He has put us in. Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. – Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Perhaps all this sounds over the top—something you would see in a “Lord of the Rings” type epic. But the reality in this world is that most people are in a spiritual battle, struggling with sin or its effects, spending their time in spiritual darkness. Imagine being in utter darkness when suddenly someone comes by offering you eternal light. Being in blindness now you can see. That is the mission of the light bearer. People are searching for a light to illuminate their souls, and God has asked us to simply shine it. Live out our inward reality where other people can see it. Love others the way Christ loves us. Lay out our platter of the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control so that others can partake. Jobs are great, and careers are wonderful. If you have a vocation, you are blessed, but you will never find a higher calling than bearing the light. Today, might God allow you to shine His light in every area of darkness you encounter.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for shining Your light into my dark world. Could you help me not forget? Today, allow me carry Your light and shine it on all those in the darkness around me.
AMEN

Walk In The Light

TODAY’S VERSE
Jesus replied, ‘My light will shine for you just a little longer. Walk in the light while you can, so the darkness will not overtake you. Those who walk in the darkness cannot see where they are going. Put your trust in the light while there is still time; then you will become children of the light.’” – “I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark. John 12:35-36, (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Hiking in the darkness is vastly different than hiking in the daytime. Once on a primitive hiking trip, I had to walk an injured person out of the woods to a hospital to get stitched up. It took most of the day. To catch up with the rest of the group, we hiked back on the trail during the night. Unfortunately, with so much use, my flashlight became very dim. What a hike! Winding up the mountain, large roots from the large trees crossing the trail ready to trip us, walking along cliffs, wild animals on the prowl, what would be challenging to navigate in daylight became unbearable in the dark. Slowly, using what light we had, we eventually made it back to base camp. How? By focusing on the light! You see, even with dim light, I could see the four or five feet ahead of me. It didn’t matter that thousands of acres were in darkness; I only needed to see the area where I had lit up. Even though our flashlight was dim, no matter how hard it tried, the darkness could not penetrate the light I had. In today’s passage, Jesus told us to “Walk in the light while you can, so the darkness will not overtake you.” The darkness of sin, doubt, despair, and confusion always tries to trip us up, so we have a choice to make. We can focus on the darkness or we can turn the light on! Today, might we decide to turn the light of faith, His word, and prayer on, living in the joy of knowing Jesus?

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know how dark my world can become. Help me to remember to turn on the light of faith, prayer, and Your Word so I can navigate the trail You have in front of me today. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Encourage Others

TODAY’S VERSE
Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up.
Proverbs 12:25 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Every day is full of choices. So often, we find ourselves at a fork in the road. Choices between faith or doubt, forgiveness or anger, right or wrong, yes or no, worry or trust, for many, worry is their daily choice. Whether financial, relational, or situational, they have dug themselves into a pit and can’t escape. Life is lonely in the pit. Every day they try to get out, but no one stops to help. That is what God has called you and me to do. Today’s passage says, “Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up.” You and I have been charged to be an encourager. We, too, find ourselves at a fork in the road. We can ignore someone else’s pain, or we can help them. We can stay busy minding our own business or stop to comfort someone else. We can judge, blame, and condemn others for getting themselves in a mess or extend a helping hand. We can go our own way or encourage them both in word and action. Today, commit yourself to be an encourager. Ask God to bring someone into your life you can minister to. As God has encouraged you, might you encourage others.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father help me to encourage other people. Please help me be kind and considerate and treat others how I want to be treated. Today, might I speak Your grace and love to other people so that they may find the encouragement they need.
AMEN

Hungry?

TODAY’S VERSE
Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry.’
John 6:35 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever been hungry? Have you ever had a craving for a certain kind of food? Hunger is a tremendous human drive. Jesus said He was the “bread of life,” if we believed in Him, we wouldn’t be hungry again. But He wasn’t talking about alleviating our physical hunger. Instead, Jesus is talking about another kind of hunger, just as real. It is a spiritual hunger, a hunger of the soul. A hunger for love, inner peace, joy, and happiness. Jesus knows what will satisfy your deepest needs. Today, hear the words of Jesus, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry.” Come to Jesus. Feed on His teachings and the personal relationship that He offers to you. He is the only one who can truly satisfy the hunger of your soul.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for giving me a spiritual appetite. I need You to feed my soul. I need Your bread of life to feed and nourish the deepest parts of me. I come to You now, dear Jesus. Feed me, I pray.
AMEN

Light Up My Darkness

TODAY’S VERSE
You light a lamp for me. The Lord, my God, lights up my darkness.
Psalms 18:28 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Life can be unpredictable and messy. Every one of us has some drama in our life. We all have a story. We would rather have control over our situation, but so often, we are left in the dark, wondering what to do. David experienced this. He had difficulties, but instead of staying in the dark, he turned to God for help. He cried out to God and God became his light. David wrote, “You light a lamp for me. The Lord, my God, lights up my darkness.” Today, if things become unclear, you are bombarded with problems, or if dark clouds start to clutter up your sky, turn to God. He will light your path.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for being a light in my life. Whenever I have been left in the dark, Your light has been right there. Thank You for being a lamp for my path and showing me where to go. Guide me today, I pray.
AMEN

Filled With His Love

TODAY’S VERSE
For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.
Romans 5:5 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It’s possible to have someone love you and not be able to comprehend it. I know. For whatever reason, I could love others and tell others about God’s love, but when it came to really feeling that same love, I experienced a significant block. A sense of shame, false guilt, and emptiness would come over me if I were forced to acknowledge that anyone loved me. I could hear the words “I love you” but could never receive it. I could not get the emotional reality of it through my defenses. Deep in my heart, I didn’t believe I was lovable. It was after this awareness that the grace of God and the ministry of the Holy Spirit gently brought me to the place where I could experience God’s unconditional love. But it was not easy. How about you? Do you know that God loves you? Have you received it? Do you know it in a deep and personally felt way? If not, do not despair; talk to God about it. Ask the Holy Spirit to work in your heart and make you more and more aware that God has made you lovable and showered you with His unconditional love.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I know You love me, but today I want to know it with my heart. I need Your Holy Spirit to minister to me in ways that help me understand deep in my soul that I am lovable and unconditionally loved. I pray in Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Spiritual Wisdom And Understanding

TODAY’S VERSE
We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding.
Colossians 1:9 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How different would our life be if we sought after and acquired the complete knowledge of God’s will for our life? But would that be enough? How many times have we known God’s will yet sat helpless to do anything about it? Jesus said to love our enemies. How easy is that? Perhaps that is why Paul also prayed that God would give us spiritual wisdom and understanding. If a complete knowledge of God’s will is the destination, then spiritual wisdom and understanding are the road map. It is how we get there. Today, ask God for His wisdom and understanding regarding His will for your life. He will guide you and direct your path.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I need Your wisdom and understanding regarding Your will for my life. I get easily distracted, confused, and discouraged. Fill me with Your Spirit and lead my path today. I pray in Jesus’ name.
AMEN
