Come In, Jesus

TODAY’S VERSE
Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.
Revelation 3:20 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I have always loved this metaphor. Here is Jesus coming to the door of my heart and knocking. What a deliberate move. Jesus is so vitally interested in me and you that He comes to us, knocks on our door, waiting to come in. And to do what? Investigate every nook and cranny in order to scorn and shame us? No, He knocks so we can invite Him in because He wants to “share a meal together as friends!” In his book, “The Deeper Journey,” M. Robert Mulholland Jr. writes, “God comes into the core of our being. God comes to bring light into darkness, cleansing into our sin, life into our deadness, healing into our brokenness, and liberation into our bondage; to nurture us there into wholeness in the very image of God.” And so today, Jesus knocks. Now, a door can be a considerable barrier, but to a friend, it is an entrance into a wonderful relationship. Listen, can you hear His footsteps? Quick answer the door, Jesus, your friend is here.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Jesus, thank You for knocking on my door. I hear You and open up my heart. Please, Jesus, come in and fellowship with me today.
AMEN

His Presence

TODAY’S VERSE
Now I can walk in your presence, O God, in your life-giving light. Psalms 56:13 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever wondered what it would have been like to be Adam and Eve? They had a personal relationship with God. They met with Him every day and lived in His presence. Though they disobeyed God and changed the world forever, we still have an opportunity to fellowship with God. David knew this. As a shepherd boy, he would spend his nights under the stars and sing to God. As he grew, he became “a man after God’s own heart.” David knew what it meant to walk with God. He admitted, “Now I can walk in your presence, O God, in your life-giving light.” He realized that there was nowhere he could go, no situation he could be in that would take Him outside of God’s presence. We, too, can have that same reality. God bids us come and fellowship with Him. He desires for us to live in His life-giving light. Today, stop and realize that you are in the very presence of God. Better yet, remind yourself that His presence lives in you! Rejoice and walk with Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your abiding presence. Today I choose to walk in Your life-giving light.
AMEN

Extend Grace To Others

TODAY’S VERSE
Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path.
Galatians 6:1 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We all do wrong and need help sometimes. But why is it that those of us who are forgiven so much can be so stubborn when it comes to understanding someone else’s sin? Where is the restoration? Where is the grace? Paul sees this lack of love in the church and instructs us to restore a person by being gentle and humble. In the classic book, “Truefaced,” the authors write, “One of the greatest gifts we can offer another person is a safe place to fail.” How true is that? Indeed, that is what Christ has done for us. The authors also write, “Grace frees Christians to see others as saints who sin, rather than sinners striving to be saints.” Yes, we should praise God that He has saved us and forgiven us of all our sins, but we should also remember that we are saved by “grace” and are called to live by grace as well. Today, let us offer grace to those who need it in the same proportion that God has given it to us.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your grace. Help me to be gentle and humble and extend that same grace to those around me.
AMEN

Confess

TODAY’S VERSE
If I had not confessed the sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. But God did listen! He paid attention to my prayer.
Psalm 66:18-19 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Our heart is key to our relationship with God. Our emotions, motives, beliefs, assumptions, self-image, and so much more all interface in our hearts. It is from the heart, our emotional center, where we feel the need to repent and confess our sins to God, whom we have offended. God is not interested in our thinking about sin with all its deception, lies, rationalizations, and half-hearted apologies. He would rather have our confession, repentance, and humility that come from the heart. When we go to Him in this way, there is open communication. Love, joy, and peace can be shared because our hearts are in tune with His. Today, protect your heart. Keep your conscience clear. Be honest with God in all you do.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for all the times I have held sin in my heart. I come to you repentant. Help me keep my conscience clean. Help me to be honest with you and confess all my wrong beliefs, attitudes, and behavior. I pray in Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Search Me

TODAY’S VERSE
Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Truth will set us free. Free from bondage, free from negative thinking, free from poor choices. But the truth can be elusive. This is why we must call upon the Lord to help us be honest with ourselves. David did this. He asked God to search the deepest parts of his mind and heart and point out any offensive ways in him. Jeremiah in Lamentations encourages us to “examine our ways and test them.” And when we ask God for help, we can rest assured that He has our best interests in mind. His purpose isn’t to fail us, embarrass us, or send us back a grade. He desires to encourage and motivate us, moving us toward maturity. What better way to mature than coming before God, examining our progress, and letting Him coach us through the power of His word and the Holy Spirit? Today, let God examine your heart. Seek His direction and let Him lead your way.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, search me and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
AMEN

An Open Door

TODAY’S VERSE
Open for me the gates where the righteous enter and I will go in and thank the Lord. These gates lead to the presence of the Lord, and the godly enter there.
Psalms 118:19-20 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
An open door can make all the difference in the world. How many times have you sought solutions, answers, or any form of direction, and nothing seems to appear? If only something would open up. And all the while, God is there bidding us come to Him and find the truth. However, it’s not enough to simply have an invitation or an open door. You must go in. The Psalmist understood this. He cried out to God to open the gates into His presence, and when God did, he entered. He entered into the presence of God and fellowshipped with Him. For us, every day is an opportunity to enter into the sweet presence of God. But it’s our choice. We can walk by or enter the door. Today, choose to stop and spend time with God.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I thank You for opening the door for me to fellowship with You. Lead me into Your presence, so I might know You more.
AMEN

We Live By Faith, Not By Sight

TODAY’S VERSE
For we live by believing and not by seeing.
II Corinthians 5:7 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Faith can be hard. Even the disciples struggled with their faith. They were with Jesus. They saw Him every day, they saw the miracles, they heard the teachings, and yet, how many times did Jesus have to say, “Oh, you of little faith!” Thomas wouldn’t believe in the resurrection until he saw Jesus and the nail prints in His hands. So Jesus told him, “Thomas, you believe because you have seen with your own eyes. How blessed are they who believe and yet have not seen?” And that is our lot. We are called to believe without seeing. We live by faith. Paul writes, “Now we see things imperfectly as in a cloudy mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity.” We live in what John Wimber called the “here and not yet.” It means that the Kingdom of God has come to earth, but we are not in Heaven yet. The good news is, in this world, God has assured us that faith is enough. With faith, we can have hope and certainty. Paul concludes, “We live by believing, not by seeing.” Today, trust God. Put your faith in Him. Look at life with your spiritual eyes, and you will see that faith has a sight of its own.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for my lack of faith. Today I choose to put all my trust in You. Guide me, I pray.
AMEN

Do It Again, Lord!

TODAY’S VERSE
Give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word. Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.’ After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness. All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had. The apostles testified powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God’s great blessing was upon them all. There were no needy people among them, because those who owned land or houses would sell them and bring the money to the apostles to give to those in need.
Acts 4:29-35 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Is there any wonder why the Church grew so mightily in the first century? Men and women who had known Jesus Christ, who had experienced mighty miracles and had seen Jesus rise from the dead, were now filled with the Holy Spirit. They were on a mission to share God’s forgiveness and grace with everyone they could. How does today’s passage compare to your church or personal Christian experience? Erwin McManus, in his book, “The Barbarian Way,” writes, “Somehow Christianity has become a non-mystical religion. It is about reasonable faith. If we believe the right things, we are orthodox. Frankly, whether we ever actually connect to God or experience His undeniable presence has become incidental if not irrelevant.” Sadly, what McManus is saying is true. Today let us repent of our “reasonable faith” and join those in Acts asking God to fill us with His Spirit and give us boldness in sharing about Christ. Let us ask God for His healing power and miraculous signs and wonders. Finally, let us share with those in need, be united in our hearts and minds, and testify powerfully of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus. May it be said of us that “God’s great blessing was upon them all.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive us for powerless orthodoxy. Forgive us for our lack of faith and sacrifice. We pray for holy boldness in our church. We pray for Your miraculous hand to come upon us and do mighty works. We pray for the unity of hearts and minds. Might the places we worship be shaken. In Jesus’ Name.
AMEN

Jesus Prays For You

TODAY’S VERSE
Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.
Luke 22:31-32 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is true. We do have a spiritual enemy. He does desire to destroy us. And yes, we do sin. We do fall short of how God desires us to behave. But praise God, that is not where today’s passage ends. In one of the sincerest verses in the Bible, Jesus turns to Simon Peter and says, “But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail.” What an epic moment. God, manifested in the very flesh of Jesus, calls Simon by name, looks him in the eye, and tells him that He is praying for him so that his faith may not fail. And the great truth is that He does the same for us! The Apostle John tells us that when we sin, when we are under spiritual attack, Jesus is our Advocate; that is, He speaks to God the Father in our defense. Now, we have a choice to make. We can ignore what Jesus says, or we can believe Him. Think about it. If we truly believe that Jesus is praying for us and interceding for us, it would change the way we live. Ours would be a life full of gratitude for what God has done. Peace, because of His presence. Courage, because of the confidence we have in Him. And what does He ask for in return? Listen to what He said to Peter. “Strengthen your brothers.” Today, live conscious of God’s love and protection. Hear Jesus praying for you by name, and don’t let your faith fail. Instead, walk in victory! And with renewed strength and faith, go strengthen others.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, I am so glad that You are greater than the enemy of my soul. You are all-powerful, all-loving, and all-wise. Thank You for interceding for me with Your prayers of grace, mercy, and forgiveness. Help me today, go strengthen others, with the same love You have for me.
AMEN

Give Away Your Hope

TODAY’S VERSE
Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.
I Peter 3:15 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Hope is a precious commodity. You can live without many things, but it is hard to live this life without hope. Solomon wrote, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick!” How true that is. The opposite is true, too. Hope makes the heart peaceful. Hope, in the resurrection power of Christ, enables us to overcome obstacles that hinder us. With hope in God’s love and faithfulness, we can look beyond adversity. But with hope comes responsibility. It would be wrong to have a warehouse full of food and not share it with those who are starving. Likewise, to have hope and not show others how to have the same hope, would be unconscionable. For that reason, Peter tells us to, “be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” So, where is your hope today? Is it in the living God? Are you feeling secure even when the pressure is on? If so, ask God to bring people to you that will ask about your hope. And when He does, ask God to help you present to them the reason you have hope in Christ.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for the hope that I find in You. Please give me the courage and strength to answer every person who asks me where my hope comes from.
AMEN
