Surrender To Love

TODAY’S VERSE
And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.
Ephesians 3:18-19 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There is no greater occupation for the Christian than to know the love of God. Paul prayed that we would be given the power to understand it fully. He prayed that we would experience God’s love, even though it is beyond our comprehension. Why? Because that is the only way we will ever be complete in Him. It is in truly knowing God’s love that we are endowed with the fullness of life and power that comes from God. In his book, “Surrender To Love,” the author David Benner writes, “The Christian spiritual journey consists of more than surrender to love. But it contains nothing more important. Surrender to God’s love involves confession, repentance, obedience, and service. But as I have noted, for surrender to be transformational, it must be surrender to love. And for it to lead to union with God, it must be surrender to perfect love. Christian spirituality begins with love and ends with love.” Today God will provide all the power you will ever need to understand His love, but you must surrender. Come, spend time with Him and begin to know how wide, long, high, and deep His love truly is.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, I long to know You and all the fullness of Your love for me. I surrender to it. I need it. I come humbly before You and ask You to show me the mystery of Your love for me.

Come In, Jesus

TODAY’S VERSE
Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.
Revelation 3:20 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I have always loved this metaphor. Here is Jesus coming to the door of my heart and knocking. What a deliberate move. Jesus is so vitally interested in me and you that He comes to us, knocks on our door, waiting to come in. And to do what? Investigate every nook and cranny in order to scorn and shame us? No, He knocks so we can invite Him in because He wants to “share a meal together as friends!” In his book, “The Deeper Journey,” M. Robert Mulholland Jr. writes, “God comes into the core of our being. God comes to bring light into darkness, cleansing into our sin, life into our deadness, healing into our brokenness, and liberation into our bondage; to nurture us there into wholeness in the very image of God.” And so today, Jesus knocks. Now, a door can be a considerable barrier, but to a friend, it is an entrance into a wonderful relationship. Listen, can you hear His footsteps? Quick answer the door, Jesus, your friend is here.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Jesus, thank You for knocking on my door. I hear You and open up my heart. Please, Jesus, come in and fellowship with me today.

Comfort

TODAY’S VERSE
All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles.
II Corinthians 1:3-4 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Comfort is only as good as its source. The word comfort means to “come next to.” The best comfort comes from someone who has the power to comfort you. Like the police officer who says, “You are safe now.” The Doctor who says, “Your test came back negative, you will be okay.” Paul is encouraging the early church to be comforted because God is the source of our comfort. He writes, “All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles.” Are you troubled today? Come next to God and let Him comfort you. Are you weary and don’t know what to do? Move toward God, lean upon Him, and let Him wrap you in His arms. He will comfort you. Are you at the end of yourself, too frozen to move? Turn your head in His direction, whisper with your thoughts, and He will hear you. He is the merciful Father and the source of all comfort. Today, come next to Him and be comforted.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I am coming next to You. I need Your arms; I need Your face, I need Your voice. Comfort me, dear merciful Father, of all comfort. Strengthen my arms, give courage to my legs, and help lift my head up. Here I am, comfort me, I pray.

Harmony

TODAY’S VERSE
So then, let us aim for harmony in the church and try to build each other up.
Romans 14:19 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
You would think the church would be a place where each person builds up the other, but that’s not always the case. We can hurt each other, just as any other social group can. Apathy, jealousy, gossip, anger, and bitterness often run rampant in the church. That is why Paul said to “aim” for harmony and to “try” to build each other up. We do that by submitting to the leading of the Holy Spirit. When we do, the Holy Spirit produces in us His fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. This enables us to build each other up in ways that foster harmony. So today, ask the Holy Spirit to guide you, mold you, and use you, and let us aim for harmony and begin to build each other up.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Holy Spirit, I invite You to produce Your fruit in my life. I want to live in harmony with others and help build them up. In Jesus’ name.

God’s Love

TODAY’S VERSE
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:38-39 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There are two ways to look at today’s passage. The first is the most obvious. God in His omnipresence is everywhere you go and nothing can separate you from Him or His love for you. It is God-dependent. God has taken on the challenge always to love you no matter what outward circumstances you may be in. And He can do this because, as John writes, “God is love.” But there is another reality that is hidden in today’s verse. That is your own “inward state awareness of God’s love.” As you mature, you assimilate your circumstances and influences around you. You allow them to create in you an inner state of being. It is like a person who has a loving caregiver knows, even when they are separated for long lengths of time, they are still loved by that person. The love was just as real in the person’s absence as in their presence. This is because, over time, the consistency of the love of their caregiver had become part of their inner state of being. How much more can this be true of God? God has created you with the ability to know His love. Know it in such a profound way that even in dire circumstances, you can experience His loving presence. As you fellowship with God and get to know His heart, His love will create in you a trusting confident state of mind. You will be convinced that what Paul said is true. Nothing can separate you from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your deep love for me. Thank You for allowing me the privilege of knowing You and having Your love become a part of my very being. Help me to trust in that love.

Press On

TODAY’S VERSE
I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.
Philippians 3:13-14 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is so easy to live in the past. Remorse, grief, disappointment, bitterness, so many painful emotions can keep us in a state of limbo. Paul had regrets; he had persecuted Christians. Paul had disappointments and hardships, but he knew the secret to living with all of life’s ups and downs. He pressed on. He knew when the time was right; it was time to let go. It was time to quit looking behind and trust God for the future. God doesn’t remain in the past, and neither should we. Today, what is keeping you in regret? What has you locked in painful emotions? Give it to God. Forget the past and look forward to what God has ahead. He is not finished with you yet!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I have hung on to my past. Today, I surrender to You. I quit looking back with regret, sorrow, remorse, and bitterness and will look forward with anticipation, joy, and excitement toward what lies ahead. Today, I choose to trust You. In Jesus’ name.

Protect My Heart

TODAY’S VERSE
See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily.
Hebrews 3:12-13 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is so easy for our hearts to wander. Temptation, disappointment, deferred hope, loss, heartache, lust, greed, anger, jealousy, Spiritual apathy, and isolation are just some of the ways that our hearts can become sinful and unbelieving. We must do all we can in order not to be deceived and lose heart. Paul shares three ways to protect our hearts. He writes, “Fix your thoughts on Jesus.” Fixing our thoughts on Jesus will keep us from “heart” failure. He will help keep our hearts at peace and joy. In Philippians, Paul writes, “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Here we see that the protection of our heart starts with our head. We need to fix our thoughts on Jesus and those things that build us up. In today’s verse, Paul gives another way to protect our hearts. He writes, “Encourage one another daily.” Isolation can be a “kiss of death” to our hearts. We get alone in our pity party, and soon we find ourselves feeling helpless, hopeless, and unbelieving. Instead, we need to fellowship with others. Today, find a friend and share your thoughts. Let them encourage you, pray for you, and help you with your burden. You can then do the same for someone else. Whatever else you do today, protect your heart!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for the times I do not guard my heart. Help me to fix my thoughts on Jesus and those things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy. Help me to seek the fellowship of others that can, in turn, help me and encourage me. Lord, protect my heart, I pray. In Jesus Name.

Jesus Prays For You

TODAY’S VERSE
Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.
Luke 22:31-32 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is true. We do have a spiritual enemy. He does desire to destroy us. And yes, we do sin. We do fall short of how God desires us to behave. But praise God, that is not where today’s passage ends. In one of the sincerest verses in the Bible, Jesus turns to Simon Peter and says, “But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail.” What an epic moment. God, manifested in the very flesh of Jesus, calls Simon by name, looks him in the eye, and tells him that He is praying for him so that his faith may not fail. And the great truth is that He does the same for us! The Apostle John tells us that when we sin, when we are under spiritual attack, Jesus is our Advocate; that is, He speaks to God the Father in our defense. Now, we have a choice to make. We can ignore what Jesus says, or we can believe Him. Think about it. If we truly believe that Jesus is praying for us and interceding for us, it would change the way we live. Ours would be a life full of gratitude for what God has done. Peace, because of His presence. Courage, because of the confidence we have in Him. And what does He ask for in return? Listen to what He said to Peter. “Strengthen your brothers.” Today, live conscious of God’s love and protection. Hear Jesus praying for you by name, and don’t let your faith fail. Instead, walk in victory! And with renewed strength and faith, go strengthen others.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, I am so glad that You are greater than the enemy of my soul. You are all-powerful, all-loving, and all-wise. Thank You for interceding for me with Your prayers of grace, mercy, and forgiveness. Help me today, go strengthen others, with the same love You have for me.

Soften Your Heart

TODAY’S VERSE
This is what the Lord says to the people of Judah and Jerusalem: “Plow up the hard ground of your hearts! Do not waste your good seed among thorns.”
Jeremiah 4:3 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever tried planting vegetables in a patch of weeds? I did once, and it was a disaster. Instead of breaking up the soil and getting rid of the weeds, I had heard that laying plastic down and cutting a slit for the seeds was easier. It made sense to me. So, I planted the seeds and thought the plastic would stop the weeds. Perhaps that would have been true if I used black plastic. But I used clear! Hello! Without knowing it, I created a greenhouse for weeds! So much for my shortcut. Barely a vegetable survived. How much better had I plowed the row, planted the seeds, and then systematically taken out the weeds? This is what God wants us to do with our hearts. We are to take our spiritually hardened hearts and break up the soil. We do this by letting God’s word humble us, teach us, correct us, and guide us. Through His Spirit, God takes out the weeds that have grown in our hearts. When we allow this, God then replaces the weeds with the fruit of the Spirit. Is your heart hardened toward the things of God? Soften it today through prayer, a humble attitude, and His word.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I give You my heart. I ask You to break up the hardened ground and pull out all the weeds. Take the seeds of your word and create the fruit of the Spirit in my life.

Fellowship

TODAY’S VERSE
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.
Colossians 3:16 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Isolation can really get you down. It is easy to lose your focus and succumb to negative emotions when you try to live all by yourself. Loneliness can eat away at you and undermine your spiritual growth. The good news is that you don’t have to be alone. You don’t have to isolate. You have everything you need in Christ and in the fellowship of other believers to live a fulfilling Spiritual life. Paul encourages us to let His word dwell in us and penetrate deep into our hearts and souls. The word dwell is used to indicate something living in a residence. Christ indwells us, and through the Holy Spirit and His word, desires to have a deep relationship with us. This relationship can be as real as any relationship we have ever had. Paul also encourages us to fellowship with others. The kind of fellowship where we teach, help, and admonish each other. Fellowship, where we nurture our faith through singing and worship. God established the church so we could have this kind of fellowship. Today, make it a point to stop isolating yourself. Establish a deeper relationship with God. Reach out and find other believers that you can share and fellowship with. As you do, God will enrich your life.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I desire to have a deeper relationship with You. I want to enrich my life through fellowship with other Christians. Help me make this a priority in my life today. Please show me where to begin. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN
