Love Not Fear

TODAY’S VERSE
I, yes I, am the one who comforts you. So why are you afraid of mere humans?
Isaiah 51:12 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What is the opposite of “love”? Our first answer would no doubt be “hate.” I used to think so. However, the longer I live, the more I believe “fear” is the opposite of love. True, if I am going to “act” the opposite of love, it would be to hate. But if I am going to “live” the opposite of love, it would be to live in fear! Fear keeps me from love’s reality. Fear tells me that the promises of love are nothing but lies. Fear chooses to doubt love’s sincerity. Worse, it doubts the lover. When I choose to believe fear, it means I have chosen not to believe God. He says, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” And yet I act as if I will be abandoned, all alone with God nowhere in sight. I need to start seeing God as God. How about you? Do you live in the reality of His love? He is the one who comforts you. He is the one who will never leave you. He is the one who will never stop loving you. Today, believe it, rejoice in it, live as if it is true. It is.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I confess I live much of my life in quiet desperation. Fear is always challenging my belief in Your love for me. Today, I renounce that fear. I rebuke it in Jesus’ name and choose to believe in Your love for me.
AMEN

Trust, Don’t Fear

TODAY’S VERSE
Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How many times have you tried to stop being afraid? Throughout the scriptures, God tells His people to “fear not.” Here though, Solomon tries a different approach. He says to “Trust in the Lord.” But not just a casual trust; he said to trust in the Lord with all your heart. It makes sense. If we are going to stop fearing, we must replace the fear with trust. That’s what Solomon meant. He said not to listen to our twisted logic, lies, and misconceptions that lead us to fear. Instead, we must trust God, submit our life to Him, lean on Him for sound direction, and He promises He will lead us. So today, don’t fear, instead, trust in the Lord. Bring your fears to Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for being there. Today, instead of fearing or leaning to my understanding, I will put my trust in You.
AMEN

Don’t Worry

TODAY’S VERSE
Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying.
Romans 12:12 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Jesus warned us, “Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows.” Life is, well, life. It comes with all the ups and downs. But we must remember what Jesus said next. He said, “But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” What comfort. This is why Paul could write to the church in Rome, urging them to rejoice in their hope. But not just a half-hearted hope. He said a hope that is confident in its outcome. With this confidence, he wrote that we could also be “patient in trouble.” This kind of patience comes out of the awareness that God is there and that He cares. That is why Paul finishes his instructions with, “Keep on praying.” God is greater than our worries. Today, when troubles come, be confident in your hope. Be patient and talk to God about your problems. He will guide you. He will comfort, He will give you strength.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You that when troubles come, I can come near to You. I can be confident in my hope that You care, and will guide me and help me. Help me today to be patient and bring every worry to You. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Fear

TODAY’S VERSE
The LORD said to him, “Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the LORD? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.”
But Moses said, “O Lord, please send someone else to do it.”
Exodus 4:11-13 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
God wanted to rescue His people from slavery, so He chose Moses to go to Pharaoh to demand that the people be released. Moses’ reaction was one of shock and trepidation. Moses said to God, ‘“Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?’ And God said, ‘I will be with you.’” That should have finished it. God is enough for any crisis. But I love the next part. God, in His grace, allows Moses to show his reservations. Moses goes down a long list of reasons why he could not do what God asked him to do. The Lord is patient with each excuse, and in today’s verse, we see God’s tender mercy as He explains to Moses how He will help him speak and teach him what to say. But Moses still asks God to let someone else go and talk to Pharaoh. So God told Moses that He would send Aaron with him to speak for him. What mercy. God loved Moses, and Moses felt heard. With God’s help, Moses was able to do the job God gave him. Today, what are you afraid of? What has God asked you to do that you keep putting off? Tell God about it. Let Him know your concerns. He will help you. He will teach you. He will be your strength. With God, you can do it!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know me intimately. You know my fears and reservations. Empower me to do Your will.
AMEN

Hypocrite

TODAY’S VERSE
Jesus replied, ‘You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote, ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship is a farce.'”
Mark 7:6-7 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
According to Webster, a hypocrite is “a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings, puts on a false appearance of virtue or religion.” None of us start out trying to be a hypocrite, but if we’re not careful, it can happen. What starts as a beautiful relationship with Christ somewhere along the way becomes a religion. We begin to believe that God would love us more if we behaved in certain ways, and slowly go from a relationship of grace to a system of works. We end up spending more time knowing about God and less time knowing Him. Our Christianity becomes more about church and less about discipleship. We “talk” about Jesus instead “walking” with Him. Jesus said it this way, “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” Today, be real with God. Come to Him, seeking to know Him. Ask Him to reveal Himself to you in new and refreshing ways. Live in the reality of His grace and fellowship and love Him with all your heart, soul, and mind.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, search my heart. Help me to know where I have wandered from You. Forgive me for any hypocrisy and help me to live in the full awareness of Your love and grace.
AMEN

Gambling

TODAY’S VERSE
And don’t grumble as some of them did, and then were destroyed by the angel of death.
I Corinthians 10:10 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Life can be hard. Not everything works out as planned. That is why God created us with the capacity for resilience. By faith, we can return to joy from negative emotions. But returning to joy is a choice. Sadly, instead of joy, we often choose to grumble. Grumbling is different than simple negative emotions. Sadness, disappointment, and even anger can be natural reactions to stressful situations, and with time spent in reflection, we can find our way back to joy. But grumbling is different. Grumbling, unchecked, becomes a bitter root that destroys faith, hope, and joy. It grows and festers, blaming, attacking, and rebelling against anything that might cause it pain. Grumbling eventually attacks the very sovereignty of God Himself. Be warned; grumbling is an offense to God. So today, check yourself. Are you letting anger and frustration get the best of you? Are you blaming and complaining? Are you spending more and more time grumbling? If so, heed Paul’s warning and stop. Repent, seek God’s forgiveness, recognize His profound love for you, and return to joy.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for my critical spirit. I repent of grumbling and complaining. Today, I will trust You and return to joy.
AMEN

Promised Land

TODAY’S VERSE
The people refused to enter the promised land, for they wouldn’t believe his promise to care for them. Instead, they grumbled in their tents and refused to obey the LORD.
Psalms 106:24-25 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There was a place full of peace and joy. It was the promised land, a land of “milk and honey.” It represented His presence, blessing, and provision. However, the people “refused to enter.” Why? They refused to believe that God would care for them. We would like to think this only applied to the Israelites, but the truth is, we often feel the same way. A friend dies, we lose our job, misfortune is at our door, and all of a sudden, God seems distant, His promises shallow. We begin to grumble, and the promised land starts to fade away. But just because we feel a certain way and begin to think negative thoughts doesn’t mean we have to continue that way. We have a choice. We can repent and take responsibility for our thoughts, renounce negative thinking, and proclaim God’s truth. Today, choose faith. Put doubt, fear, anger, and grumbling behind you. Choose to trust in God’s love and His promise to care for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for grumbling. Forgive me for my lack of faith and doubt. Help me today to trust in You and believe Your promise to care for me.
AMEN

Thoughts

TODAY’S VERSE
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
II Corinthians 10:5 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The battle is in our minds. Truth versus lies. False assumptions versus God’s promises. Negative predictions versus faith. Roots of bitterness, jealousy, fear, and shame versus the mind of Christ. And though God’s power can overcome all these strongholds, how much better if we never let negative thinking get that far. We can if we follow Paul’s advice. He asks us to “demolish arguments and every pretense that sets itself up against the knowledge of God and to take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” A stronghold begins with a simple negative thought. Then, instead of renouncing it, we make a subtle agreement with it. “God doesn’t care.” “I can’t do it.” We start to generalize using words like “never, always, and every.” Oh, not a stronghold yet, but if we don’t stop and start to disagree with the thought, what are we really doing? Soon, we begin to ruminate and start to build on the negativity. Before you know it, we have created a full-blown story. We have “set ourselves up against the knowledge of God.” God wants us to renounce and correct negative, unbiblical thinking. Today, commit your mind to God. Let His Holy Spirit guide your thoughts and align them with His Word.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your presence in my life. I commit my thinking to you. Holy Spirit rule in my mind. Help me know and believe Your truth so I can make all my thoughts obedient to Christ.
AMEN

Faith Not Fear

TODAY’S VERSE

“If only we had died in Egypt, or even here in the wilderness!” they complained. Why is the Lord taking us to this country only to have us die in battle? Our wives and our little ones will be carried off as plunder! Wouldn’t it be better for us to return to Egypt?”

Numbers 14:2-3 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT

Faith is not easy. Here is a classic struggle where the children of God expected one thing and ended up with something else. They left Egypt, where they were slaves, hoping for a land of their own. And now, because of the report of “giants in the land,” they were afraid for their lives. All they could think of was returning to slavery! Isn’t that just like fear? All we can see is negativity. But not faith. Faith sees God; fear sees giants. Faith sees freedom; fear sees slavery. Faith sees the promised land; fear sees a wilderness. While the other spies saw giants in the land, Joshua and Caleb said, “The land we traveled through and explored is a wonderful land! And if the Lord is pleased with us, he will bring us safely into that land and give it to us. It is a rich land flowing with milk and honey.” The people reacted in fear; Joshua and Caleb reacted in faith. Today, no matter what your circumstances, choose faith.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Father, help me to see through the eyes of faith. Help me to trust You and not fear. Give me courage and strength, I pray.

AMEN

What’s The Use?

TODAY’S VERSE

What’s the use of serving God? What have we gained by obeying his commands or by trying to show the Lord of Heaven’s Armies that we are sorry for our sins?

Malachi 3:14 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT

Have you ever been disappointed? Has it ever seemed like everything was going wrong, and God seemed nowhere in sight? Sure, it has. We all go through these “dark nights of the soul.” Often, the question arises, “What’s the use of serving God?” “What good is living the life He wants me to?” It is in these times that we reflect and pray for perspective. We come to God and ask for wisdom and mercy as we work through our faith. The Israelites didn’t. Instead, the questions they were asking were rhetorical. They were really saying, “It is no use in following God. We haven’t gained anything from serving Him.” They were bitter and cynical about life. And that is where we will be if we don’t remember all that we have gained from knowing Christ. What have we gained? We have gained forgiveness, unconditional love, freedom from our sins, direction, provision, meaning, purpose, a relationship with Him, the filling of the Holy Spirit, and everything good in our lives. What have we gained? How about a second, third, and hundredth chance, a do-over, a new life, a new Father, a new eternal home? Today, don’t let cynicism get the best of you. Answer the question, “What’s the use of serving God?” by considering all the ways you have been blessed.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Father, how I praise You for Your love and mercy. How I thank You for your provision. Help me today to remember all You have done for me. AMEN
