Sin Issues

TODAY’S VERSE
But where sin increased, grace increased all the more.
Romans 5:20 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
God’s grace is amazing. Paul knew this, so he wrote, “Where sin increased, grace increased all the more.” Paul explains that grace has set us free in Christ, so that we are no longer slaves to sin. In “True Faced,” the authors write, “The environment of grace provides me with truth, acceptance, healing, safety, perspective, freedom, and the power that I did not before know; these realities are foundational to resolving my sin issues.” You see, God’s grace is more than forgiveness. It is the availability of God’s power to help us mature. He forgives us and then helps us live for Him. Today, don’t run and hide from God. Talk to Him about sin issues in your life. Though you are overwhelmed, He will forgive you. He will help you. His grace is greater than your sin.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for the death and resurrection of Your son, Jesus Christ. Thank You for Your forgiveness, mercy, and grace. Guide me, direct me, work with me, and by Your grace, help resolve the sin issues in my life.
AMEN

Amazing Unbelief

TODAY’S VERSE
He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. And he was amazed at their lack of faith.
Mark 6: 5-6 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
This passage has constantly challenged me. Why couldn’t Jesus do miracles in His hometown? Obviously, in His own power, Jesus could have performed any miracle He chose, but that is not the way God wants it to work. Our Father wants us to join Him in His work in this world. It is our faith and recognition of His love that works in tandem with His power. So when Jesus was faced with this crippling unbelief, only a few were healed. What is shocking is that the people He grew up with should have known that Jesus was the Son of God. Instead, their lack of faith was so bad that Jesus was utterly amazed. Their unbelief shocked Him. But let’s not be too quick to judge. Is it possible that we, too, have taken Him for granted? Could it be that we also find ourselves doubting His power? Oh, that our lack of faith would never cause sadness to the heart of God. Today, might we consider our own lives? Let us examine our hearts and ask God to birth in us a fresh wind, a new fire, and an amazing faith.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for my unbelief. Forgive me for my doubt. Forgive me for taking You for granted—today, birth in me a fresh wind, a new fire, and an amazing faith.
AMEN

Hypocrite

TODAY’S VERSE
Jesus replied, ‘You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote, ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship is a farce.'”
Mark 7:6-7 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
According to Webster, a hypocrite is “a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings, puts on a false appearance of virtue or religion.” None of us start out trying to be a hypocrite, but if we’re not careful, it can happen. What starts as a beautiful relationship with Christ somewhere along the way becomes a religion. We begin to believe that God would love us more if we behaved in certain ways, and slowly go from a relationship of grace to a system of works. We end up spending more time knowing about God and less time knowing Him. Our Christianity becomes more about church and less about discipleship. We “talk” about Jesus instead “walking” with Him. Jesus said it this way, “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” Today, be real with God. Come to Him, seeking to know Him. Ask Him to reveal Himself to you in new and refreshing ways. Live in the reality of His grace and fellowship and love Him with all your heart, soul, and mind.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, search my heart. Help me to know where I have wandered from You. Forgive me for any hypocrisy and help me to live in the full awareness of Your love and grace.
AMEN

Gambling

TODAY’S VERSE
And don’t grumble as some of them did, and then were destroyed by the angel of death.
I Corinthians 10:10 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Life can be hard. Not everything works out as planned. That is why God created us with the capacity for resilience. By faith, we can return to joy from negative emotions. But returning to joy is a choice. Sadly, instead of joy, we often choose to grumble. Grumbling is different than simple negative emotions. Sadness, disappointment, and even anger can be natural reactions to stressful situations, and with time spent in reflection, we can find our way back to joy. But grumbling is different. Grumbling, unchecked, becomes a bitter root that destroys faith, hope, and joy. It grows and festers, blaming, attacking, and rebelling against anything that might cause it pain. Grumbling eventually attacks the very sovereignty of God Himself. Be warned; grumbling is an offense to God. So today, check yourself. Are you letting anger and frustration get the best of you? Are you blaming and complaining? Are you spending more and more time grumbling? If so, heed Paul’s warning and stop. Repent, seek God’s forgiveness, recognize His profound love for you, and return to joy.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for my critical spirit. I repent of grumbling and complaining. Today, I will trust You and return to joy.
AMEN

Thoughts

TODAY’S VERSE
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
II Corinthians 10:5 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The battle is in our minds. Truth versus lies. False assumptions versus God’s promises. Negative predictions versus faith. Roots of bitterness, jealousy, fear, and shame versus the mind of Christ. And though God’s power can overcome all these strongholds, how much better if we never let negative thinking get that far. We can if we follow Paul’s advice. He asks us to “demolish arguments and every pretense that sets itself up against the knowledge of God and to take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” A stronghold begins with a simple negative thought. Then, instead of renouncing it, we make a subtle agreement with it. “God doesn’t care.” “I can’t do it.” We start to generalize using words like “never, always, and every.” Oh, not a stronghold yet, but if we don’t stop and start to disagree with the thought, what are we really doing? Soon, we begin to ruminate and start to build on the negativity. Before you know it, we have created a full-blown story. We have “set ourselves up against the knowledge of God.” God wants us to renounce and correct negative, unbiblical thinking. Today, commit your mind to God. Let His Holy Spirit guide your thoughts and align them with His Word.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your presence in my life. I commit my thinking to you. Holy Spirit rule in my mind. Help me know and believe Your truth so I can make all my thoughts obedient to Christ.
AMEN

Thanks

TODAY’S VERSE
Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!
Psalms 100:4 (ESV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is easier to give thanks to God when everything is going well than it is when we have conflict and trouble in our life. When there is sickness, discouragement, failure, misunderstandings, when all seems to be lost, how can we give thanks? From a human viewpoint, we experience anxiety, depression, or despair. However, knowing Jesus, we are blessed with a Heavenly vantage. Paul says it this way, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.” Paul saw through the filter of God’s power, grace, mercy, peace, and love. The Psalmist invites us to have an ever-present attitude of praise. He said to enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise. And so today, with all there is to worry about, with all your needs, frustrations, and concerns, turn to God. And as you do, give Him thanks and praise because He cares for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I give You thanks for who You are. I give You thanks for Your grace, mercy, peace and love in my life. I give You thanks for making me Your child and promising to never leave me or forsake me. I praise You and thank You in Jesus’ name.
AMEN

What’s The Use?

TODAY’S VERSE

What’s the use of serving God? What have we gained by obeying his commands or by trying to show the Lord of Heaven’s Armies that we are sorry for our sins?

Malachi 3:14 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT

Have you ever been disappointed? Has it ever seemed like everything was going wrong, and God seemed nowhere in sight? Sure, it has. We all go through these “dark nights of the soul.” Often, the question arises, “What’s the use of serving God?” “What good is living the life He wants me to?” It is in these times that we reflect and pray for perspective. We come to God and ask for wisdom and mercy as we work through our faith. The Israelites didn’t. Instead, the questions they were asking were rhetorical. They were really saying, “It is no use in following God. We haven’t gained anything from serving Him.” They were bitter and cynical about life. And that is where we will be if we don’t remember all that we have gained from knowing Christ. What have we gained? We have gained forgiveness, unconditional love, freedom from our sins, direction, provision, meaning, purpose, a relationship with Him, the filling of the Holy Spirit, and everything good in our lives. What have we gained? How about a second, third, and hundredth chance, a do-over, a new life, a new Father, a new eternal home? Today, don’t let cynicism get the best of you. Answer the question, “What’s the use of serving God?” by considering all the ways you have been blessed.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Father, how I praise You for Your love and mercy. How I thank You for your provision. Help me today to remember all You have done for me. AMEN

My Church

TODAY’S VERSE
I am afraid that I will find quarreling, jealousy, anger, selfishness, slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorderly behavior.
II Corinthians 12:20 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Paul is concerned about the behavior of the church in Corinth. He was afraid that he would come to Corinth and find the church full of quarreling, jealousy, anger, selfishness, slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorderly behavior. As a result, Paul encouraged the people to examine themselves and repent of ungodly behavior. What if Paul came to your church, what would he find? We are human, so no doubt he would have similar concerns. Therefore, we need to follow the same example as the Corinthian church. We need to examine ourselves and ask God to cleanse us of relational sin. We need to ask God to fill our church with His Spirit and to really love each other. Today, pray for your church. Pray that together you would be a witness to your community of His love.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come and pray for my church. I ask that You would fill us with Your Spirit. I pray that You would help us repent of sin and live the life of love that You have called us to. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Remember His Power

TODAY’S VERSE
They forgot what he had done, the wonders he had shown them.– They did not remember his power.
Psalms 78:42

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What is worry other than forgetting the power and promise of God? The legacy that the Jews, who fled from Egypt, left for their children is that they forgot about the power of God. All the miracles, all the provisions they had experienced, and yet they were guilty of murmuring, complaining, and idolatry. They lived as if God did not exist. Jesus came many centuries later and still found the same lack of faith. He was born amongst a people who did not know the all-powerful God. So He showed them. He taught them not to worry about their needs because God would provide for them. He taught them to seek Him first, and everything they needed would follow. Jesus lived among them for three and a half years. They saw the miracles, heard His teachings, experienced His power and yet, like the Jews in the wilderness, “They forgot what he had done, the wonders he had shown them. They did not remember his power.” What about you? When situations come today that force you to take pause, will you fear or have faith? Will you remember all that He has done, or will you worry in unbelief? Today, remember that the God of all power and provision is the same yesterday, today, and will be tomorrow.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I thank You for being the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. I thank You for Your power continuing today as it has in the past. I know that You can provide, protect, and keep me from falling. In faith, I give my life to You. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Don’t Be An Imposter

TODAY’S VERSE
As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:328-42 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is so easy to be busy with “God’s work” that we forget who we work for. Question. What do you think God is more interested in, us or the work we do for Him? You must be careful. It is not wrong to be busy when you need to be. There are seasons of hard work. But why are you doing it? To earn God’s love? To keep up appearances? Because of what others might think if you don’t work at the church all the time? Brennan Manning calls this being an imposter. He writes about it in his book, “Abba’s Child”. “Imposters are preoccupied with acceptance and approval. Because of their suffocating need to please others, they cannot say no with the same confidence with which they say yes. And so they overextend themselves in people, projects, and causes, motivated not by personal commitment but by the fear of not living up to other’s expectations.  – Living out of the false self creates a compulsive desire to present a perfect image to the public so that everybody will admire us and nobody will know us. The impostor’s life becomes a perpetual roller-coaster ride of elation and depression.” Mary chose to worship Christ. And though Martha’s hard work and devotion are commendable, she was filled with worries and cares. Jesus had to remind Martha that what Mary had chosen to focus on the love that Christ has for us was the only thing Martha had to do. If she did that, everything else would fall into place. Today, might we understand that we don’t have to earn the Lord’s love. Instead, we need to live as if we already have it. We do!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me serve You with a sincere heart. Forgive me for the many times I have been an imposter, just acting a part so I could win approval. Help me understand Your love for me in such a way that I would be a Martha with Mary’s insight.
AMEN
