Trust God

TODAY’S VERSE
Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
Proverb 3:5-6

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We never seem to run out of opportunities to “trust” God. That doesn’t mean we choose to trust Him. If we were honest with ourself, we would admit that most of the time we choose to fear, run, hide, get mad, pout, strike out at others and a myriad of other reactions to the many stresses in our life. But this is not what God wants. God wants us to trust Him. Solomon knew this and shared his secret to trusting with us. Trusting is the result of drawing near to God with your heart. Trust is choosing to move from fear to faith, anger to peace, and doubt to certainty. Solomon warned about depending on our own understanding only. He encouraged us to move toward God, seeking His will in everything that is going on. It is in “trusting God with all of our heart” that we find Him near, showing us which way to go. Today, when you find yourself in a quandary, stop! Draw near to God, seek His will, and trust in Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, I come to You, drawing as near as I can. Here is my heart. I come seeking Your will and will trust in You.
AMEN

Surrender To Love

TODAY’S VERSE
And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.
Ephesians 3:18-19 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There is no greater occupation for the Christian than to know the love of God. Paul prayed that we would be given the power to understand it fully. He prayed that we would experience God’s love, even though it is beyond our comprehension. Why? Because that is the only way we will ever be complete in Him. It is in truly knowing God’s love that we are endowed with the fullness of life and power that comes from God. In his book, “Surrender To Love,” the author David Benner writes, “The Christian spiritual journey consists of more than surrender to love. But it contains nothing more important. Surrender to God’s love involves confession, repentance, obedience, and service. But as I have noted, for surrender to be transformational, it must be surrender to love. And for it to lead to union with God, it must be surrender to perfect love. Christian spirituality begins with love and ends with love.” Today God will provide all the power you will ever need to understand His love, but you must surrender. Come, spend time with Him and begin to know how wide, long, high, and deep His love truly is.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, I long to know You and all the fullness of Your love for me. I surrender to it. I need it. I come humbly before You and ask You to show me the mystery of Your love for me.
AMEN

Convinced

TODAY’S VERSE
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love.
Romans 8:38 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It seems we start out believing by nature, but soon become skeptical by practice. How many “guarantees” have you experienced as no guarantee at all? We have been lied to, taken advantage of, and let down so often that we don’t know what to believe. But Paul knew one thing he was sure of. He was “convinced!” He was convinced that nothing could separate him from the love of God. How many things are you convinced of? And what a difference being that sure of something can make. If you were convinced that you could invest $10,000 in stock and get back $1,000,000, how long would it take you to get the $10,000? Paul had that same attitude toward the love of God. He was convinced that he could invest in God’s love, which will never leave him, and receive back a peace that passes all understanding: God’s constant provision, the fruit of the Spirit, and eternal life. Today, become convinced. God loves you, and nothing will ever separate you from Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I believe, help my unbelief. I want to be convinced of Your love. Speak to my heart, move me, help me understand how trustworthy You are and how spectacular Your love is for me.
AMEN

Loving Others

TODAY’S VERSE
Then Jesus asked them, ‘Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?’ But they remained silent. He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored.
Mark 3:4-5 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How did the church ever become a country club? When did we decide it was a place to simply “Grow in the Lord” and not be a vibrant, loving witness for those outside our front doors? When did we give up the mission work to the “missionaries” and decide not to be the light of the world right in our backyard? Not many things made our Lord angry, but this was one of them. Don’t stand in the way of Him ministering to someone in need. What is so sad is that the Pharisees could have been a help. With their standing in the community, they could have gone out and compelled people to come and meet the Messiah. What an impact they could have had on the world, but they were unable to move past their traditional views. Somehow, God-loving people who were different from them, people who did not live the same kind of life as they did, was an offense. They did not see God’s love for the whole world and the mission Jesus was on. How about us? Do we reach out to those outside our church? Today, let us check our beliefs against the scriptures. Let’s compare our love for people with that of our Lord Jesus. We are His disciples. Let’s follow His words when He shared the story of the Good Samaritan and told us to, “Go and do likewise.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me love people. Open my eyes, open my heart that I may reach out to others the way You would. Work in, and through me, I pray.
AMEN

Pour Out Your Heart

TODAY’S VERSE
O my people, trust in him at all times. Pour out your heart to him.
Psalms 62:8 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Ever have anyone tell you, “I can’t help you if you don’t tell me about it.” You know, you are distressed, you come to a friend, and they can tell something is wrong. They ask you, “What is it?” and you say, “Nothing.” They want to help, but can’t because you won’t engage with them. You won’t share what is bothering you. Isn’t that how we treat God? Sure, we believe “in” Him, we just don’t believe Him. He says that He is all-loving and all-powerful. He says that we should cast all our cares on Him because He cares for us. He promised that He would never leave us or forsake us. Even if our mother forsakes us, He says, “I will never forget you.” And yet we don’t take the time to share our concerns with Him. He is not our confidant. We don’t “pour out our hearts to Him.” Isn’t it time to change? Doesn’t your heart long for a close, loving relationship with God? You can have it. It’s yours if you want it. Today, begin a new, fresh relationship with God. Pour out your heart to God; He is waiting.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I confess that I hurry through life and don’t take the time to pour out my heart to You. I do so much on my own. But Lord, I want that to change. I long for a deeper walk with You. Help me today to trust You more. Help me sense Your loving presence and share with You from the depths of my heart.
AMEN

Stand In Awe Of God

TODAY’S VERSE
Let everyone stand in awe of him.
Psalms 33:8 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever been blown away by something? Watching Michael Jordan make a dunk, the sunset in Hawaii, Isaac Stern playing Beethoven’s Sonata in C Minor on his violin, and the Rocky Mountains; these are just a few things that can inspire. But the Psalmist writes of something much more significant than any mountain majesty. He writes of the majesty that created the mountain. He shares, “The LORD merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born. He assigned the sea its boundaries and locked the oceans in vast reservoirs.” His conclusion was, “Let the whole world fear the LORD.” What about you? When was the last time you stopped and stood in awe of God? When have you let your mind go and just bask in His greatness, His power, and His infiniteness? No one can do it for you. The good news is, it’s easier than you think. Just stop. Close your eyes and whisper, “How mighty You are, dear God.” Let it sink in and add, “I stand in awe of You, almighty Lord.” Then wait—muse on Him. Pause and let the majesty of God flood your soul. He is awesome. He is mighty. Today, stand in awe of Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, You are mighty! You are glorious. You are worthy of all my praise. To You be the glory! I stand in awe of You.
AMEN

Love Others

TODAY’S VERSE
If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that.
Matthew 5:46-47 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is a lot easier to love those who love you. But Jesus wasn’t satisfied with that. He wants us to love those who don’t love us in return. This is harder than it seems. Paul expresses what love is. He writes, “Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice in injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” I have a hard time loving those who love me this way, so what chance do I have of loving those whom I don’t particularly care for? The truth is, I can’t. Loving the way God does must come from God. If you and I desire to live the way God wants us to, we need His power, His strength, and His Holy Spirit to fill us and exhibit the fruit of the Spirit in our lives. Today, let God live His love through you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, I want to love others the way You did, but I need Your help. It is so hard to love those who don’t love me. I need Your power. Give me the strength to love the way You would have me.
AMEN

Truth

TODAY’S VERSE
Get the truth and never sell it; also get wisdom, discipline, and good judgment.
Proverbs 23:23 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
You would think that “truth” would be a priority in our lives. But not so. If we examined our lives, we would be shocked at how many lies we believe. In his book “The Lies We Believe,” Dr. Chris Thurman exposes many of the lies we take for granted. Lies like, “I must have everyone’s love and approval.” “I can’t be happy unless things go my way.” “Life should be easy.” How about this one: “Because I am a Christian, God will protect me from pain and suffering.” There are so many more that we believe. Jesus told us that truth would set us free. Why? Because He knew that lies keep us in bondage. What can you do? Challenge the lies you believe by asking God for the truth. Lies usually come at the expense of ignorance, so Solomon suggests that you also ask God for wisdom and the discipline needed to act on it. Finally, Solomon suggests we exercise good judgment. Sound judgment and discernment will keep us living according to the truth we decide to believe. Today, ask God for His truth, wisdom, and discipline, and let the truth set you free.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, it is so easy to believe a lie. Worst, too often, I am tempted to live a lie. I need Your help. I want to live in truth. Give me the wisdom, discipline, and sound judgment I need to know and live the truth today.
AMEN

God’s Will Be Done

TODAY’S VERSE
May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Matthew 6:10 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The disciples came to Jesus and asked Him to show them how to pray. Jesus shared with them what is now known as the “Lord’s Prayer.” In the prayer, He says, “May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.” Notice Jesus did not say, “God, may my will be done on earth.” So often, that is how we are tempted to pray. Instead, Jesus teaches us to align our desires with God the Father. In “Desiring God’s Will,” Dr. David Benner writes, “The prayer that comes most naturally for all of us is ‘My name be hallowed, my kingdom come, my will be done.’ This is a prayer of independence and willfulness. It is the liturgy of the kingdom of self. The prayer that goes against our nature and that can become our prayer only through the action of divine grace is the Lord’s prayer. It inverts everything in the liturgy of the kingdom of the self – ‘Thy name be hallowed, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done.’ It is a prayer of surrendered autonomy and willingness. It is the liturgy of the kingdom of God.” Today, attune your heart with God. Pray for wisdom, discernment, and align your request with His will. Then we can pray, “May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I ask that You would help me discern Your will for my life. Help me align my joys, desires, and will with Yours, I pray.
AMEN

Search Me

TODAY’S VERSE
Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Truth will set us free. Free from bondage, free from negative thinking, free from poor choices. But the truth can be elusive. This is why we must call upon the Lord to help us be honest with ourselves. David did this. He asked God to search the deepest parts of his mind and heart and point out any offensive ways in him. Jeremiah in Lamentations encourages us to “examine our ways and test them.” And when we ask God for help, we can rest assured that He has our best interests in mind. His purpose isn’t to fail us, embarrass us, or send us back a grade. He desires to encourage and motivate us, moving us toward maturity. What better way to mature than coming before God, examining our progress, and letting Him coach us through the power of His word and the Holy Spirit? Today, let God examine your heart. Seek His direction and let Him lead your way.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, search me and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
AMEN
