Thoughts

TODAY’S VERSE
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
II Corinthians 10:5 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The battle is in our minds. Truth versus lies. False assumptions versus God’s promises. Negative predictions versus faith. Roots of bitterness, jealousy, fear, and shame versus the mind of Christ. And though God’s power can overcome all these strongholds, how much better if we never let negative thinking get that far. We can if we follow Paul’s advice. He asks us to “demolish arguments and every pretense that sets itself up against the knowledge of God and to take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” A stronghold begins with a simple negative thought. Then, instead of renouncing it, we make a subtle agreement with it. “God doesn’t care.” “I can’t do it.” We start to generalize using words like “never, always, and every.” Oh, not a stronghold yet, but if we don’t stop and start to disagree with the thought, what are we really doing? Soon, we begin to ruminate and start to build on the negativity. Before you know it, we have created a full-blown story. We have “set ourselves up against the knowledge of God.” God wants us to renounce and correct negative, unbiblical thinking. Today, commit your mind to God. Let His Holy Spirit guide your thoughts and align them with His Word.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your presence in my life. I commit my thinking to you. Holy Spirit rule in my mind. Help me know and believe Your truth so I can make all my thoughts obedient to Christ.
AMEN

Wisdom

TODAY’S VERSE
Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:1-2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Much of the sin in our lives stems from our emotions. We get upset, worried, stressed, and emotional pain starts to build up. This can lead us into anger, jealousy, fear, bitterness, and other painful emotions. Treated negatively, it can lead us into sin. The solution is found in relationships. Relationships with God and other close friends provide us with the love, support, and comfort that can help tame our sinful behavior. Likewise, you can be that loving help for someone else. It is in these deep relationships that Paul encourages you to gently and humbly help a person return to sanity and stop their negative behavior. How? By sharing their burdens and pain. In using a kind word, a listening ear, and a prayerful heart, your sincere help will keep a person from acting out on their negative emotions. Your empathy and love will help keep them from committing grave relational sins. Today, ask God to help you share in someone else’s burden and restore them to a place of peace and joy.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me be there for other people. Help me share their burdens and gently bring them back to You. Thank You for Your grace and mercy extended to me. Help me do the same to others. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

My Church

TODAY’S VERSE
I am afraid that I will find quarreling, jealousy, anger, selfishness, slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorderly behavior.
II Corinthians 12:20 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Paul is concerned about the behavior of the church in Corinth. He was afraid that he would come to Corinth and find the church full of quarreling, jealousy, anger, selfishness, slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorderly behavior. As a result, Paul encouraged the people to examine themselves and repent of ungodly behavior. What if Paul came to your church, what would he find? We are human, so no doubt he would have similar concerns. Therefore, we need to follow the same example as the Corinthian church. We need to examine ourselves and ask God to cleanse us of relational sin. We need to ask God to fill our church with His Spirit and to really love each other. Today, pray for your church. Pray that together you would be a witness to your community of His love.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come and pray for my church. I ask that You would fill us with Your Spirit. I pray that You would help us repent of sin and live the life of love that You have called us to. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Get Rid Of Anger

TODAY’S VERSE
Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret- it leads only to evil.
Psalm 37:7-8

TODAY’S THOUGHT
In life, you will always find situations that will make you angry. It is what you do next that makes a difference. Many who have acted out their anger justify it by saying that it was “righteous indignation.” But I don’t see righteous indignation listed by Paul as one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Instead, God encourages us to react differently. In today’s passage, we are told to be still before God and wait patiently for Him. We are to stop fretting, refrain from anger, and turn from wrath. Paul writes in his letter to the Ephesians that we are to get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, brawling, slander, and malice. Paul admonishes us to be compassionate and forgiving toward each other like Christ is to us! Today, when pressures mount up, when there is a misunderstanding, when you feel like there is no way out, don’t let anger take over. Get rid of the bitterness, rage, and anger that consumes you. It is a habit that needs to be broken. Instead, pause, take a deep breath, lift up a prayer, and ask God to help you react in a more Godly fashion. Do what Paul suggests. Be kind, compassionate, and forgiving toward those that have made you mad. Why? Because Christ has already done the same for you!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know how anger comes so easily for me. You know how I struggle to let you control my life, especially in adverse situations. Forgive me. Help me trade my anger for compassion, my bitterness for forgiveness, my rage for love. Help me live the way You would have me live. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Strength Of My Heart

TODAY’S VERSE
My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.
Psalms 73:26 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Asaph, the author of this Psalm, was a bitter man. He was envious of the wealthy and upset at his demise. He was consumed by what he thought was unfair about life. But then he came to his senses. He writes, “Then I realized that my heart was bitter, and I was all torn up inside. I was so foolish and ignorant”. How many have we times have we felt the same way? But who says life is fair?” Where in the Bible does it say everything in life is going to be grand? Where does it say that we will be spared from pain and heartache? Fortunately, Asaph awoke from his bitterness with the realization of what mattered. He wrote, “Yet I still belong to you; you hold my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, leading me to a glorious destiny. Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth.” Asaph realized what was the most important thing in life. He said it all in today’s passage, “My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.” It is the strength of the heart that comes from knowing God that matters. Paul said it this way, “Nothing can separate us from the love of God.” Our circumstances may crumble, our bodies fail, our enthusiasm all but gone, yet God will never, never, never leave us or forsake us. The strength of our heart from His abiding presence will remain with us forever.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me to truly understand what it is to have You as the strength of my heart. Help me treasure Your relationship above all else. Thank You for loving me and being my strength forever.
AMEN

Mind Your Heart And Mind

TODAY’S VERSE
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.
Colossians 3:15-16 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
William Backus, in his book “Learning To Tell Myself The Truth” writes, “Sadly, misbeliefs, whether verbal or visual, are the direct cause of emotional turmoil, maladaptive behavior, and most self-destructive behavior, such as overeating, smoking, lying, substance abuse, or adultery, to name a few.” It is true that the consequences of misbeliefs, misinterpretations of events, and skewed predictions about outcomes all too often lead to despair and the dysregulation of our emotions. Therefore, it is crucial that we protect our hearts and our minds. Paul shares how we can do this. First, he says we are to let the peace from knowing Christ rule in our hearts. The heart is where our emotions, imagination, visualizations, dreams, and aspirations come from. We need to let Christ rule in each of these areas. He should fill our imaginations, dreams, and visions with His peace. Satan uses our imagination. Have you ever noticed that you fear in technicolor, surround sound, and 3-D? It is the same with anger, hopelessness, and any other of our painful emotions. Our imagination goes wild. Instead, we need to let Christ’s peace fill our hearts. We need Him to be the Lord of our imagination. Second, Paul writes, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.” It is the word of God that challenges and helps correct any negative core belief. As His word dwells in our minds, we will begin to see it spill over into our belief system. This overflow happens through “admonishing one another with all wisdom, and singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.” Today, give God both your heart and your mind. Let Him be the Lord of your thoughts and imagination.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, please let Your peace rule in my heart. Let Your word dwell in my mind. Help me grow with others as we admonish each other with all wisdom. May I be blessed by singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. May I be filled with gratitude in my heart to You, dear God. In Jesus’ name, I pray.
AMEN

Forgiveness

TODAY’S VERSE
But when you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins, too.
Mark 11:25 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Forgiveness can be difficult. It is hard to forgive some of the offenses against us. But we must remember that forgiveness is a very important part of our spirituality. We go to church, and we pray; we read the scriptures. This is all good, but Jesus is making it clear that the true test for real Christianity is to forgive others. That is because all of Christianity is built on forgiveness. Where would we be without the forgiveness of Christ? In “Steps To Freedom In Christ,” Neil Anderson shares the following six essential elements of forgiveness. 1. Forgiveness is not forgetting; rather, forgetting is a long-term by-product of forgiveness. 2. Forgiveness is a choice, a decision of the will. 3. Forgiveness is agreeing to live with the consequences of another person’s sin. 4. We forgive from our heart, not our head. 5. Forgiveness is choosing not to hold someone’s sin against them anymore. 6. Finally, do not wait until you feel like forgiving. If you do, you will never get there. Instead, make a hard choice to forgive those you are bitter toward. Let go of all the unforgiveness that is eating you up inside. Today, let God help you forgive.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord Jesus, You know the pain I harbor in my heart. Forgiveness seems so far from my grasp, yet I know You have commanded me to forgive. Help me forgive those who have offended me as You have graciously forgiven me. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Take No Revenge

TODAY’S VERSE
Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God.
Romans 12:19 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Revenge. What a toxic emotion. What a deceptive motive. It is so easy to slip into this deadly trap. It starts with a wound—perhaps a deep hurt, humiliation, or betrayal. Life isn’t fair, but this is just too much! Soon, our wound festers, and anger becomes an obsession. But what makes revenge so deceptive is that we don’t have to murder someone to get revenge. Instead, we feel justified in slandering the person, shunning them, campaigning against something they are doing, or a million other ways of getting nasty. But this is not revenge. It is getting even, giving them what they deserve, or settling the score. No, it is revenge. It is hard not to go there. What can we do? Paul shares the only thing we can do. Let go. Give it to God. Let Him take over your case. The author of Hebrews was serious when he wrote, “Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.”  Today, follow that advice. Let God search your heart and pull out any bitter root that has taken ground in your emotions. Don’t let a wound fester into something worse.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, search my heart. Show me any toxic bitterness I may have. Show me any attitude or behavior of revenge. Forgive me and help me change my attitude. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Forgiveness

TODAY’S VERSE
Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt. I said to myself, ‘I will confess my rebellion to the Lord.’ And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone.
Psalms 32:5 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What hope is found when we stop doing something we shouldn’t be doing. What peace is ours when we set out to make right those wrongs that we have committed. What joy we experience when we unburden our self of things that have held us prisoner in the dungeon of guilt. David paints the picture of inner turmoil and anguish we bring upon ourselves when we store the toxic emotions of a guilty conscience. He writes, “When I refused to confess my sin, my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long.” But later, David writes, “Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is put out of sight! Yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of guilt, whose lives are lived in complete honesty!” Where there is pain, there can be joy. Where there is guilt, there can be forgiveness. Today, come to God with anything that is bothering your conscience. Don’t go another day without experiencing the joy from a heart forgiven.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for the substitute death of Christ for my sins. I know I can bring any of my wrongdoings to You for Your complete forgiveness. Lord, hear my prayers of repentance and restore joy deep into my soul.
AMEN

Tongue And Temper

TODAY’S VERSE
Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless.
James 1:19, 26

TODAY’S THOUGHT
James doesn’t pull any punches. He knows how easy it is to pretend we are living for Christ. We have all the correct outward behavior. We know the right phrases, attend the right programs, and do the right ministries. But James doesn’t talk about any of that. Instead, he gets right to the heart of Christianity. He says that we MUST be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. How different would this world be if everyone would heed what James said? How many fights, feuds, and even wars have been fought because people would not control their tongues or emotions? How worthless has our Christianity seemed to others because we did not allow James’ admonition to permeate our behavior? If Jesus would be Lord and Master of our life, He must be Lord and Master of our tongue and temper. If this has been a weakness, confess it to Christ and ask for the help of His Holy Spirit. He will guide you. Today, might we give our emotions to Christ. When given an opportunity, might we be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know how often I have been so swift to speak and get angry. You know how I have not listened to others the way I should. I confess my poor habits and ask, dear Lord Jesus, that You forgive me and fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Please give me the discipline I need today to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN
