The zero-sum view of the economy can be disproven in less than a minute. Think about America a century ago. Or Canada. For starters. The population growth since then. The economic growth. The technological growth. The growth in life expectancy. And the growth in personal Income. It would take a special kind of willful blindness to think that this all came from a fix-economic pie.

- the federal government can conjure money, but the states can’t.
- big businesses want uniform regulations across as large of an area as possible.
- the political debate occurs on screens with global reach.
To a (hopefully) lesser extent, a disappointing proportion of people on all sides want to impose their beliefs on others and view the ends as a war that must be won.
]]>What doesn’t work is capricious unpredictability and micromanagement like capping credit card interest rates at 10% and banning institutional investors from buying houses.
It’s sad. This is what happens when people don’t operate from an understanding and respect for American principles (mainly respect for individuals rights and liberty). People should judge politicians and policies against these principles. They should trust politicians less, even their favorite ones.
