Dadography
So why Dad In The Headlights? I am a proud father of two daughters and I love them to death. However, it seems like the more time passes, the less I feel I know about parenting rather than more. Yes, I feel like a deer in the headlights. If you know me, you know that I am not actually a deer. So I changed it to Dad In The Headlights.Â
Well, let me tell you a little about myself. Sheesh, this is going to bore the snot out of you. I would suggest getting the caffeinated beverage of your choice to make it through this. Go ahead…I’ll wait…
Let’s see, I’m in my early 40s, I’ve been married to my lovely wife for 18 years and have 2 beautiful daughter (ages 16 and 12). We live on a 19-acre ranch near Middleton, Idaho and have quite a few of God’s creatures sharing our space with us:
- 5Â Cats
- 2 Dogs
- 2 Horses
- 2 Donkeys
- 1 Steer
- (sorry folks, no partridges or pear trees)
The ranch is just a “hobby”–I make my living as a Database Administrator (nerd alert). Between work, the ranch, and shuttling the kids to various activities, I don’t have time for any interesting hobbies. When I do have spare time, you’re likely to find me in front of the computer (because 9+ hours a day at work is not enough) or the TV.
So why a blog? I’ll admit, it’s for mostly selfish reasons. I’ve got a lot of thoughts bouncing around in my head. This is a good outlet to organize those thoughts and publish my insane rantings for all to see. My girls are also growing up way too fast. I admit that the inevitable changes in my relationship with them is an area I’ve had a tough time with. I’m hoping that this will be a healthy forum for me to express my feelings about things that are going on (my way of therapy without the $100-an-hour crackpot). Along the way, if I can help someone else deal with similar situations or vice versa, that’s great. Aside from that, I hope the blog will help me keep in better touch with those I care about and perhaps make new friends along the way.
What’s the theme of my blog? Everything and nothing. I don’t anticipate that my blog will have any overriding theme. You’ll end up seeing whatever happens to be on my mind in a given day. Expect to see things like:
-
something that strikes me as funny
-
thoughts on a current event or political issue
-
something in everyday life that pisses me off
-
attempts to crack the secret code of the female teenage mind
-
something totally random
One day I might make you laugh, the next cry, the one after that think about something in a little different way. If I entertain you, tell a friend. If you have any suggestions on how I can improve, let me know.

Hi, Bryan,
I followed you over here after reading some comments you made in Bekki’s blog. I found upon reading your introduction that I probably speaks Bryanese quite fluently! I understood what you were saying perfectly without a translator!
I’m afraid that I can’t help much with the parenting issue. My husband of 34 years and I decided to remain childless, and it’s not an area where “armchair quarterbacking” is appropriate. However, I am a good listener, a warm and intelligent human being, and I once was a teenage girl myself!
I’ve enjoyed reading your introduction; I DO enjoy a good writer, and you are one. If I may, I’ll check back again and let you entertain me!

Thanks for the kind words. I do my best. As I said, this blog helps me deal with the crazy things that go on in life and it also helps that I can make other laugh as a side benefit. I just wish I had a little more time to devote to it. I try to post daily but don’t always make it.
If you have a blog, let me know. I’d love to check it out.

I have a blog here on WordPress. https://saintpaulgrrl.wordpress.com. After I commented on your introduction yesterday evening, I glanced through your blog. You had me laughing, and I even read some passages aloud to my husband. He agrees: you’re a good writer! And it’s great to make people laugh. (When one is trying to be humorous, of course! 😉 )

Surprised that a “dad” with daughters would think making fun of and putting down women in every area of our state is funny?
I find it offensive and sort of degrading
to women.
