What is Text Shadow?

Text shadow is one of those little known CSS tricks that can make your words pop off the page. Every object cast shadows, then why not text. Basically, it adds a blurred or solid shadow behind your text like the drop shadows you see on old movie posters or album covers.

People overuse it sometimes and end up with that early 2010s "everything must glow" look, but when you keep it subtle, it is honestly a game-changer for readability and style.

Common Text Shadow Effects

Here are some of the different types of text shadow effect:

Soft subtle drop : The everyday hero. Something like text-shadow: 1px 1px 2px rgba(0,0,0,0.4);. It just lifts the text off the background a tiny bit so it doesn't get lost, especially on photos or noisy patterns. Every portfolio and SaaS landing page from the last decade owes this one a beer.

Hard crisp shadow : Think retro posters or brutalist vibes: text-shadow: 4px 4px 0 #000;. No blur, pure offset. Looks bold and confident, works great with chunky sans-serifs and bright backgrounds.

Multiple shadows (the glow + drop combo) : Stack a tight shadow for crispness and a bigger blurred one for glow: text-shadow: 0 0 10px #fff, 0 0 20px #fff, 2px 2px 4px rgba(0,0,0,0.6);. Instant neon sign or cyberpunk headline.

How to use this to generate text shadow css
