AI in CS at WWU – Today and Tomorrow: Artificial Intelligence is here. In the classroom. In industry. In the private sector. We are actively innovating the curriculum and seek to provide opportunities for students to become efficient users and architects of current and future AI technologies. Our commitment to our students is steadfast: https://cs.wwu.edu/ai-computer-science-western.
We provide a rigorous and forward-looking education that prepares students to thrive in today's rapidly evolving computing landscape. Our hands-on approach ensures that students move beyond mere programming to depth and mastery of the fundamentals, and to develop insight, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous growth as they engage with both the enduring challenges and emerging opportunities of computing. Major-level courses are capped at 35 students and taught by full-time faculty. Many courses are project-based, in which students collaborate in teams that reflect the innovation and teamwork found in tech careers. Through this collaborative and inclusive learning environment, students become effective communicators, creative problem solvers, and responsible professionals. As AI continues to reshape society, we teach students to develop and use AI tools effectively and ethically, using sound judgment to identify and mitigate potential risks. Our graduates thrive across the tech landscape, from global leaders to fast-growing regional IT companies and startups, while some continue their academic journeys by pursuing Ph.D. degrees.
Degrees, Minors, and Certificates
We offer an ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, a BS in Data Science, and a BA in Education. Our BS in Cybersecurity is a 2+2 program partnering with Western's Cybersecurity partners in Bellingham, Poulsbo and Kirkland. Students are exposed to various aspects of the CS discipline, including theory, algorithms, and architecture foundations. Ethics, as well as communication and presentation skills, and critical thinking, are emphasized throughout our curriculum.
Opportunities
We offer a variety of student opportunities to enrich the classroom experience. These range from student-run clubs to faculty mentored research projects, in areas such as Virtual Reality, Cybersecurity, Machine Learning, Data Science, and Human Computer Interaction. Networking with regional companies and lecture series further enrich the student experience, as do our peer-mentoring and advising efforts.
