This blog is where I express my personal views about the use of computers, about computer technology and about software, for studying and understanding the world in which we live.
I am not mocking the linguistic journal here by using the name Semiotica. I am accounting, in public, for my understanding of the semantic thesis of Dr. Tom Adi and pointing out that a semantic thesis is concerned with how people represent the world in thought and in language. It is not an either/or situation or circumstance, in my view.
Linguists occupy themselves with language and syntax alone while Tom Adi and I considered the deeper questions of what connects thoughts and ideas to the objects in the world of experience –where one also finds the objects of discourse and language.
I think the world is ready for computers to be used for more than just data processing and structuring data, but whether it happens is another thing entirely. I am happy that I was able to live and work around the world while I implemented many kinds of text processing systems ranging from alphabetical indexing, to page make up and word processing, as well as automatic translation systems. Readware was the most elegant and beautiful of all the software architecture in which I was involved.
I spent the better part of my life working together with Dr. Tom Adi. Since 1985, we have extended Tom’s research and successfully implemented software algorithms, programs, and API’s for building programs.; each of them interpreting meaning from the verbal expressions of unrestrained, unstructured, messages and texts.
As of 2010, it is noteworthy that Readware is the only system in existence that transforms natural language words into formulas that take such representations into the domain and range of a function selective (and representative) of an abstract operation (used in thinking).
While it is not something that either of us can admit to fully understand, Adi used his theoretical findings to invent a new technology and we designed and built useful generic and specialized software applications. We have sold these applications around the world until 2005, when we began shutting down commercial development and sales operations. In 2010, we closed the remaining commercial operations and production facilities after taking the software off the market.
I have been privileged to be involved with the development, production and application of Readware technology, a novel software and intelligent framework of organized concepts used for document indexing, analysis, classification, search and retrieval. (Note: I am aware of several customers still using our products and those customers can still come to me for support, although we will no longer provide updates to the desktop software or internet API’s.)
Today, at the pleasure of my wife and soul-mate Gloria, I enjoy the garden, writing, some advising and consulting, contemplating and enjoying our union, and keeping on eye on what is called “semantic” technology.
