The primary goal of CMI’s work is to prevent and resolve political conflicts, which is essential for the development of countries and regions affected by violence and instability. CMI aims to create sustainable, context-specific contributions for peace, focusing on three main objectives: improving the quality and effectiveness of peace processes, enhancing the agency of key stakeholders who can influence sustainable peacemaking, and strengthening the practices of the peacemaking community to better support peaceful societies.
CMI’s approach is built on two complementary strategies. The first involves mediation and dialogue, where CMI brings together actors with opposing views. The second strategy focuses on accompaniment, where CMI serves as a trusted partner, offering advisory expertise and providing a space for stakeholders to exchange ideas and experiences on conflict prevention and resolution.
We engender trust because of our independence and because we do not have an agenda to push. Our approach is defined by our ability to carefully listen to the conflict parties and their needs. We stress the responsibility of parties and key stakeholders to propose their own solutions. We talk to all parties, but do not take sides. As we are under no official constraints, we can act quickly, and engage confidentially. Our independence gives us space to act where official actors cannot.
Our work focuses on four regions: Eurasia, Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Additionally, CMI’s work has three thematic priorities – Women in Peacemaking, Youth in Peacemaking and Digital Peacemaking.
