Maria Health: simple, easy healthcare access online

I stumbled on Maria Health  when a friend posted about the company receiving a funding for it’s Philippine operations. Curious, I visited their website and finally found a a place where I can see Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans available in the Philippines.

Usually, HMO plans are part of your job benefits but Maria Health gives you an opportunity to select your plan based on what you need. The website basically sort out the plans between (1) individual plans vs. business plans, (2) prepaid plans and post-paid plans, (3) plans for kids, adults and seniors and (4) plans by HMO company.  You can also opt to buy bundles (kids, adult, senior or family) or purchase coverage just for ER or consultations or both.

This is really a great website. I think a lot of people can benefit from it – those working for freelance, those who want to purchase for their household help, those who are in between jobs and what coverage or those who don’t have no HMO plans in general.

ShopBack: Coupon Codes, Promotions + Cashback

I don’t remember how I came across ShopBack but I do remember being wary of it. Maybe it was some kind of phising scheme. I mean, they were asking for my bank account, of course I was scared! But after doing some kind of research, I found out they were legit. Basically, ShopBack allows you to earn money while shopping. They have affiliate websites like BeautyMNL, Lazada, Zalora and Shopee. Instead going directly to your website of choice, you first login at ShopBack first. This way, they can measure and monitor your purchase via the “click-thru” and you earn a small percentage depending on your total bill. That easy. Here’s a video of how it works!

The redemption just takes a while though. Sometimes it can reach to months. But I can say that it truly works. I’ve earned about P7000 from all my online shopping purchases and so far redeemed 800 to my savings account. I can even earn more if I refer people. Should you decide to make a ShopBack account, here’s my referral link – Sign Up with ShopBack

Lazada: Top Up Mobile Prepaid

I’ve had a postpaid line for over a dozen years but for a short time last year, due to work, I had to get a prepaid sim card. I thought it would be so bothersome to load up my prepaid sim card  (I remember having to go to store to buy the cards when I first had a phone). Glad to find out I was so wrong. Did you know that you can go to Lazada for prepaid load? Just to go their website and click the “Load & eStore” (black arrow below).

Click “Load” again. After that you’ll see this Top Up Mobile Prepaid page. Just fill out your number and select your operator, and just select your mode of payment.

What’s, you get a 5% discount from the amount and you can use your credit card, haha! Now nifty and convenient. Sometimes, I even buy load for my officemates and they pay me the full amount 😛 Anyway, that’s just a quick Clars find for today.

Book Depository: Millions of Books with free delivery worldwide

Book Depository is basically a website that sells a wide range of books, even obscure ones. What’s great about it is that it’s free delivery and furthermore it delivers straight to your shipping address which is very convenient . For us here in the Philippines, that is a God-send. The only downside I see is you pay in US dollars and our exchange rate is bad at the moment. But if you find a good bargain, you should go for it! I’ve purchased twice so far and the books have arrived within 2 weeks to a month after I ordered. They are all in good condition, well-packaged problems. They also provide a way for you to track you order and that’s neat. Just don’t be surprised that it’s not consolidated in one package or box. It depends if the books you bought came from the same seller or country.

Here’s a screenshot of their landing page

Tide to Go: Instant Stain Remover

I’ve always known about Tide, the laundry detergent, but I never heard of the Tide To Go, an instant stain remover, until about two or three years ago. During a christmas party, a friend spilled a bit of pasta sauce on her white blouse. Immediately, another friend offered her Tide To Go,  a “pentel pen-sized” version of the detergent.

I was so amazed that it worked! The stain lightened, if not disappeared. I soon found myself going to Google and searching where to get one and found one I did at the Lazada website! It was being sold on sale by True Value and I remember I got one for P245 pesos.

It’s pen-like design makes it easy to bring and/or store. It’s always in my bag and I carry it everywhere. Some people at the office even borrow it when they have “accidents”.  One caveat though, if you plan to use it on colored clothes, you have to do a color test first. I used the pen on a light blue top and now it has a white blob. Other than that, I beliwve it’s a great investment.

BPI eCredit: The Internet Shopping Card

I don’t exactly remember when i started shopping online. All I know the feeling of uncertainty, not just of the products I’m purchasing but also of inputting my credit card details online. All that changed when I received a BPI eCredit card.

bpi e-credit

My BPI eCredit came with my regular credit card replacement but anyone can request for one and it’s free. It has a different card number and CVC (or is CVV?) code. When I received it foro the first time, I believe I had to call BPI to set a limit for the eCredit. That way, my online spending can be curbed and if my credit card account got compromised it’s only until the amount I had set.  Note though that the purchases using the card is still under the main BPI credit card.  Anyway, with all the shopping apps and website, I suggest you get one. Not much of a hassle for a bit of security .

Black Fork Bistro

Jiddu was the one who really discovered Black Fork Bistro. He was looking to buy churros for me and found that Sancho’s Chucherria along Maginhawa was already closed. In its place was this modern-looking minimalist-inspired restaurant named Black Fork Bistro. Luckily, they had churros 😛

Being located in Maginhawa means it’s tricky to get a good parking. But the universe has been kind to us so we always get a spot in front of the restaurant whenever we decide to go there. We’ve gone there so many times they’ve recognized us and we sort of have our table. During special occasions they have a special menu or a promo na sulit. We’ve tried a lot of their food but I honestly can’t remember them all. All I know is that I’m always happy after . The appetizers, salad, soup and main course are delicious. I find their desserts (the cakes) a bit on the sweet side and more expensive so I always get churros (and possibly the giant cream puff) after meals.

Anyway, if you find yourself in maginhawa looking for a date place, or just a quiet place to hang around (I don’t think they have wifi though), consider Black Fork Bistro! Check out their Instagram and you’ll see all the stuff they offer.

OWNDAYS glasses

I’ve been wearing eyeglasses since I was 8. I’ve lost count how many pairs I bought, used and broke. It’s so frustrating finding a pair that fits your face and your budget. I usually spent at least P3,000 because of my eye grade. I hated wearing glasses. I wore contacts daily since college (at least when I’m outside the house). That is, until I fell in love with a pretty but inexpensive pair that I bought in Vietnam. But after about 4 years of using this pair, the right stem broke for some reason 😦 I tried to fix it by making a makeshift brace with popsicle sticks and medical tape but then I had no choice. Soon after, I gave in an bought a pair at Ideal Vision for P7,000 (P2,500 for the frame, P4,500 for the ultra thin lens for my eye grade of 700).

A week or two later, I was while waiting for Jiddu in Trinoma, I decided to check out OWNDAYS, an eyewear shop from Japan. I’ve been seeing their stalls/stores in various malls in Metro Manila but I never entered one since because it looks like they sell expensive frames. Boy, was I wrong! After 20-30 minutes, I found myself with a pair of OWNDAYS AIR Ultem (flexible stems) for a price of P3,850 (all in!)

I love OWNDAYS – they have so many styles, they process fast, you can buy another pair or replace your lens at a discount and they have worldwide guarantee.

owndays.png

Apart from these benefits though, what I like is that they give back.

  1. Part of their profits goes to giving glasses to developing countries via the OWNDAYS Eye Camp, where in volunteer doctors conduct eye exams and OWNDAYS makes glasses based on the prescriptions.
  2. They also have the  Respectable program, where you can donate your old pair of glasses of any brand. Just visit any OWNDAYS store and drop off your pair in the Respectable box.

So if you find yourself needing a pair of glasses, go to an OWNDAYS shop. Totally worth it!

Phone App: Quality Time

It’s been a week since the start of the new year. For 2019, I wanted to be more purposeful and mindful of my time. I realize that last year I spent a lot on my phone, especially after coming home from work. I wanted to change that so I downloaded this app called Quality Time . The app shows you how much time you spend on your phone by hour, by day and by week as well as the apps you frequently use and amount of time you use them. Also, it also help you set up usage limits so you can curb phone usage. It’s only available on Android though but I think there should be similar apps for iPhone.

quality time.png

So far with the help of the app, I’ve been able to limit my phone usage to 2hrs 30mins a day and limited selected apps, particularly social media ones such as Instagram and Facebook, to 30 minutes a day. I’ve also created a weekday block off period of 6pm-9pm, when I can’t access any of my social media apps, browser or even my minesweeper game.  This way, I can use my time at home more productively, not on my phone, possibly organizing, preferably exercising or writing, hopefully making something, or maybe just hanging out and bonding with my nephew. I highly recommend downloading this app.

Boulangerie22

I’ve seen this coffee shop/bakery before but never really checked it out until last my girl friends from work and I had a galentine’s day last Feb. We were looking for a nice and cozy place to chat inside SM North and didn’t want to go to Starbucks or places with a looooot of people. There weren’t a lot of options but good thing we walked passed Boulangerie22.

From outside, given that French-inspired name, Boulangerie22 looks expensive, but actually their prices are reasonable. Their coffee and frappes are cheap, nothing above 99! Their mini croissants and holy cheesus (cheese square bread) are good enough to snack on and the truffle mac & cheese is yummy! And they have daily promos too! The place has no WiFi though (but who needs WiFi when you have a lot of stories to share!)

My only complaint about the Boulangerie22 is that they use a lot of disposables.. From airline type “plates” for the pastas to the the plastic straws and plastic cups for the frappes. I just “offset” that with my own straw and utensils. All in all though, it’s still a great discovery. I find myself actually taking a mental note whenever I pass my a branch 😄
