Useful.We’re baaack
Useful. That’s the word that comes up most often when people describe the Civic Tech Field Guide.
Today we have something for you that’s going to make it a lot more useful. We’ve spent the summer redesigning our core app:
It’s way faster. More accessible. It works better on your phone. The back button works now!
Over the coming weeks we’ll continue launching new features and sharing them with you here.
But here are some improvements you’ll notice right away:
Search
The search engine now checks project names, project website URLs, and any previous names for the project.
You can also search right from our homepage: civictech.guide.
Better data filters
Find exactly what you’re looking for with filters for:
- Project type (Event, Organization, Tool or platform, etc.)
- Organization type (non-profit, gov, for-profit, etc.)
- Category (Accelerators, Government transparency, etc.)
- 🆕 Format (API, book, podcast, etc.)
- Based in (HQ location)
- 🆕 Working in (project’s geographic focus)
- Open source (yes, no, partial)
- 🆕 Feature (Alerts, Events, Heatmaps, etc.)
- 🆕 Civic tech community (Alaveteli, NYC, g0v, etc.)
- 🆕 Tech platform (GitHub, Matrix, WordPress, etc.)
- 🆕 Political unit (city, EU, US federal, etc.)
- Social issue (air quality, heat, recidivism, etc.)
- 🆕 UN SDG (Climate action, No poverty, etc.)
- 🆕 Year started
(All filters support multi-select and can be combined.)
More accessible

Introducing the Civic Tech Field Guide app

You can install our new directory app on your desktop or phone for even quicker access to our democracy tech bounty.
How to install the app:
You can add the Field Guide as an app on your home screen or desktop for quick access:
- Open app.civictech.guide in your browser.
- Click the download icon (a cloud with a downward-facing arrow) in the lower right-hand corner of the screen
- Click ‘Install’
You’ll now see our app icon on your home screen or desktop. On desktop, you can right-click the app in your dock (Mac) or Start menu (Windows) to set it to remain there, or to open at login.
Now the Field Guide will launch like a native app: faster, cleaner, and always up to date.
Just over 17 years after the introduction of the App Store!
