This battle needs to “Go National” since once these lands and rare species are lost…they are gone forever for everyone. We’v got a tough battle ahead of us fighting developers’ massive lobbying and campaign contributions.

Sun, 20 Dec 2015 02:04:38 +0000https://cicindela.wordpress.com/?p=2033#comment-761In these days of increasing evidence of global warming and possible sea level rise, Mother Nature may already be hedging her bets where her Miami Tiger Beetles may survive future climate change. Adding a few more individual to the species base does not take away from its’ severe susceptibility to possible extinction. It’s no coincidence their only known populations are now in protected habitats. Their “Lifeboat Habitats” have to be vigorously protected. There are donors willing to buy developers’ lands to preserve these habitats for the more than the dozen rare and endangered plants and animals there. But current developers are refusing to sell and the U of Miami continues to insist it did nothing wrong selling land it got from free to further research and education….to a local developer to put up a Walmart Strip Mall. Lurking in the background? Was there an existing business relationship between Top U of Miami Officials and the land’s ultimate buyer? And why did the school fight so hard for years to keep it from being listed as endangered land and at the same time block independent experts from seeing what is really down there? We know on 2006 the school paid some $400,000 to settle a Federal Investigation into illegal nuclear waste dumping in the Pine Rocklands…..allegedly contaminating the soil and water.
Hope the answers come to light someday, and this entire habitat can be saved from Bulldozers.

Mr Cummings, please put your ego in check and do the right thing by perserving or selling the whole Richmond pine rockland.

Comment on Blight? by SunshineNews

Wed, 21 Jan 2015 23:46:05 +0000https://cicindela.wordpress.com/?p=1492#comment-678In reply to Smeecree.
Dennis Moss introduced this resolution woth public notice or comments several weeks ago before the Dade health and Social Services Committee. It passed without opposition. It is now scheduled fro a public hearing and final vote March 3rd, having been rescheduled from January 21st. If approved, it declares the entire Richmond Tract a blighted slum, and sets up a CRA to offer tax breaks, finance bond sales, and streamline development there as well as offer tax breaks for businesses moving there. I believe it also eliminates many environmental regulations. He’s trying to “end-around” the public process similar to how this rezoning for UM got slipped in with NO NEIGHBORS aware of what was going on, and only realized what happened AFTER it was too late to appeal the decision. This whole deal stinks and I believe the Dade Grand Jury and Federal Prosecutors need to look at it very closely.
Here’s the Blight Study that cost us $39,000 to produce and DOESN’T MENTION 1 ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERN or that most of the area is now Federally protected, Critically Endangered Habitat..

Wed, 21 Jan 2015 19:04:17 +0000https://cicindela.wordpress.com/?p=1492#comment-677Please help me understand what it means when the Resoluation 142509 is signed on 1/21/15, but wasn’t on the commission adgea for that date? Does it mean that they approved it? I see it is scheduled for a 3/3/15 public hearing. What Can I do to keep this from going forward. The development of this area would be environmental genocide.
