Bio & Contact Info
I edit the Web site Stateline, a project of the Pew Center on the States. At Stateline, we cover politics and policy in state capitals from a national perspective, for an audience of primarily policymakers and journalists.
Previously, I spent a dozen years at Governing magazine, a national monthly that covers trends in state and local government. I was a staff writer there for years, and later became managing editor and then executive editor before the magazine was sold in December of 2009. I wrote the magazine’s Urban Notebook column, among other features, and I also have contributed to Preservation and Planning magazines. I currently live in Silver Spring, Maryland.

- I'm a D.C.-based journalist who knows that the real action in America's civic life happens outside the Beltway. This is a collection of my latest writings.
