About
Welcome, y’all.
Charming, but single is a personal Web log about dating, not dating, online dating, thinking about dating, vowing never to date again, bad dates, good dates, nondates and (of course) frequent frustration with the male of the species.
It is the story of one woman who read too many tales with “happily ever after”-type endings growing up, who has seen “When Harry Met Sally” too many times, who admittedly paid too much attention to Carrie Bradshaw when she was in college, even though her reality is more “Steel Magnolias” than “Sex and the City”. Who writes when she gets cranky, likes college football and regularly sings loudly and off key when no one else is around.
It is also a journal of a Southern Belle hesitantly becoming the Grown Ass Woman she always knew she could be. A tale of finding Mr. Right by way of all of the Mr. Wrongs. Of a woman learning to love herself, warts and all, and realizing along the way that she won’t actually die without the marriage and the children and the monogrammed towels and the white picket fence that speckled her childhood dreams. (Though, she would like to point out that this doesn’t mean she is opposed to finding the Man and the Marriage and the Ankle Biters. The picket fence? She could take it or leave it. The monogrammed towels? Eh. They’re just towels.)
Shorter: Charming, but single is 27 28 and lives in the South. She likes both her drinks and her boys tall.

Your blog is humorous and makes me laugh. I can understand and relate to a lot of what you write. This may sound crazy but I’ve learned a lot about dating by being involved in sex work. The dark side of dating that is: double standards, cheating husbands, men who don’t want to date prostitutes but have no problem paying them, most of these men have wives and girlfriends who don’t have a clue. The fairy tale phase for me ended long, long ago. If you want to see a very jaded view of sex and dating, come by my blog sometime…
I am also a glowing optimist and really enjoy your column. I would like to thank you for contributing to my procrastination by posting such genuine and enjoyable posts. Keep on trekkin!!
I cannot believe you got featured in The Hindu. Its a newspaper in Chennai here in India. And they have NEVER covered stuff about dating etc. Well not till say 2005 or whatever. Just shows the power of the internet.
we read a lot of the same blogs and I can’t believe we’ve never crossed paths before. We sound very similar and I hope you find your tall man, sticking out in a crowd. 🙂
Just trying out online dating…any comments, hints, suggestions? Did you find you had to sift through a lot of weirdos…? I’m a tad concerned. Need some advice!
Charming, I just want you to know that you are truly one charming gal! I had nothing to do tonight and was feeling terribly low about my state of still being “single” and I happened upon your blog… my did your posts make me smile! I just wanted to thank you and to tell you that you are not alone and that (fingers crossed…) we will find the special “man” who will love us “warts and all…” i hope sooner than later…keep writing!
Gilly — Run! No, I’m totally joking. You should be open minded, e-mail and wink at a lot of people. Never trust a picture only. E-mail and IM for at least a week with people, always meet men in a public place. Don’t be ashamed of doing it … we all have to find our own way.
That’s probably too short …
I really enjoyed reading your blog – it is the first one I have read since I started blogging several days ago – I hope you come over to my side of the fence to read my blog and say hello – Jenn
I forgot to let you know that I put you on my favorite websites to visit if that’s okay!
Hey very cool blog..i totally identify with your situation. Even i grew up on a staple diet of happy endings and ‘kate and leopold’ type movies…And m too waiting for my tall guy to walk in…although i am enjoying life as a single…and in no hurry to find Mr. Right, If he does exist! adding you in my fave blogs…

I really really hope that you’ve never done speed dating. I got paid to do it. Funny thing, the lady who hosted it really wanted me to do because I’m southern and was at the time living in nyc.
Stay gold!
Elvi!
Hi,
I think u have a charming little blog… Added ya to my blogroll 🙂
Cheers
I love your blog! It’s funny and refreshing. Your stories remind me of all I hear of my single friends!
what an adorable blog!
Love your blog! 🙂
Great blog! Been there, done that and got a couple t-shirts! I had one hell of a dating life and had a lot of fun through the ups and the downs. I learned so much about myself through my dating adventures. I credit my mom for always saying, “Honey, it’s okay to play the field.” And yes, I agree … It IS okay! I use to hate people that said, “There IS someone out there.” But after meeting him (on e-Harmony) and getting married in June – I’m a believer. Life is this weird adventure through the good, bad and ugly and I’m just glad to have someone by my side to experience it with. I do think Mr. Tall exists – keep your chin up and remember – You deserve to be LOVED completely and honestly! My favorite line from Bridget Jones was, “I need something more extraordinary” … that was my matra for years! Good luck!
jesus christ, you are my arch nemesis
hello there,I read your press review, congrats on your achievements
Hey, I love your blog. Just wanted to let you know that I blogrolled you and hope you will do the same. 🙂
Hey, great blog. Where in the south are ya?
Yep, me too….I’m still wondering what in the heck happened to me.
I like your blog. I’ll be watching and reading. I’ll link to you if that’s ok.
Charming, I just found your blog & I LOVE IT! It’s a great balance of humor, ironicalness, and dash of seriousness. I’m recently single after a 9 years relationship (Phew, glad that is over) & I have been considering writing about my crazy stories (They are starting to pile up). Your Blog inspires to try it out.
I’m looking forward to your next post!
How have I missed this blog for so long??? Sounds like the musings of a single girl called Haute, trying to navigate the uber murky waters of LA’s (non) dating world. LOVE IT! You’re on my list of favs.
Hi, I just came across your blog while drinking my morning coffee and sharing cinnamon toast with my 3 yr old and watching my other baby play on the floor. I never thought I would be doing this, well maybe in my early 20’s but then finding myself single at 30 and watching all my friends marry and have children, I thought I will never meet my soul mate. I did, it was a mixture of luck and putting myself out there. I feel for you, I have been there, I have friends that are there.
I just found your blog and boy do I sympathize with you. I can say that our situations are similiar. I was working almost to the point of exhaustion only to find myself more miserable than before. I also found either shopping or eating to be vices which cause great debt. I am past that phase now. This one is more of a coantent with myself phase. I still LOVE a great handbag though. I’ll be back to read up on your next adventure.
your blog is absolutely a tribute to women, i’m much younger than you (by about 10 years aha), but already i definitely relate to a lot of what you’ve said about guys and i’m sure i have the rest to come. keep writing so we can all keep reading!
Hey Charming,
I just thought I would say hey and to say that I really enjoy your blog. I just found your blog a couple weeks ago and have pretty much been slowly reading through all of your archives. It has been quite a journey and I have to say you have chronicled it well and I look forward to reading more about your adventures in dating and not dating and life in general.

PS I looooooooooove your romantic taste in music 🙂
As a member of the seriously minor minority around here (aka. a guy) I’d just like to chime in and say a) were not ALL like that. honest. and b) this is absolutely some of the best writing I’ve come across in a while.
Charming! I’ve just stumbled across your blog recently, and I have to tell you that reading it is like reading about me! I love it. It’s quickly become a favorite. I, too, was raised down South and completely understand what you’re going through. Wrong men who just won’t go away, friends and family trying to marry you off, etc…You tell it like it is, and I love you for that!
Absolutely love the blog!!
Stop by mine when you get a chance: todaystatus.wordpress.com
Great blog, keep up the good work!
I ran across your blog and I just want to tell you I really enjoyed reading it. You’re not alone… hope you have a wonderful 2009!
