Comment on Iris Murdoch, The Flight from the Enchanter by Guillem66

Tue, 28 Jun 2022 22:00:38 +0000https://charleslambert.wordpress.com/?p=2358#comment-8303Yours is the most thoughtfull review wich i have been able to find about this novel. I specially like your notion about disenchantment: Being disenchanted leads to freedom through disilusion, and that is a very tough road both in novel as in real life, one that many will avoid even at the cost of remaining captive.
Aside from that, i find the character of Annete very touching: She goes into life feeling like a grown up strong girl, but unfortunately for her, she is deemed by most characters instead a very young and desirable woman. Her failure to aknowledge that fact, and to make defensive arrangements about it, arouses and appaling amount of agression from almost every quarter: Rainborough, wich she met as a little girl, now tryes to rape her and even justifies himself on account of her attitude. Rosa, who was in principle responsible for her, gets fiercily jealous because of Mischa and treats her as her sexual rival.
Even Rainborough secretary dissmisses her pleas for compassion because she also sees her as a rival.
All in all, it’s hard getting into adult life for poor Annete, the privileged girl. Luckily for her, her parents arrive just in time.

And I’m delighted that you enjoyed Prodigal so much, Nils. It’s a joy when you read a review that is not just extremely good, as yours was, but also perspicacious, as yours undoubtedly was. In other words, you got it, so thank you again! And do let me know what you think of the other two, if you have the time…
Charles

Thu, 21 Jan 2021 22:20:50 +0000https://charleslambert.wordpress.com/?p=3243#comment-7933I’m delighted that Mr. Lambert has responded favourably to my review of “Prodigal,” which I very much enjoyed reading. I had not previously been familiar with his work, and I am now in the process of reading his earlier novel “The Children’s House,” and I’ve just purchased a copy of “Any Human Face,” which is on my to-read list. Judith, I’m so sorry, I’ve only just found your comment. I don’t think there’s any family connection. My father’s family came from Lancashire and Scotland and, unfortunately, had no Faber connections as far as I know! But thanks for getting in touch with me. I’ll be taking a look at your site. And once again, I do apologise!

I grew up in Sussex but moved to Oregon, USA in the early 80s. I have published four poetry collections and a memoir. Info: https://www.judithbarrington.com
Maybe….?

Fri, 15 Sep 2017 15:18:18 +0000https://charleslambert.wordpress.com/?p=3100#comment-3466I must admit that, in Italian, I tend to say, in a slow and thoughtful manner ‘Umm, una bella domanda’ in the hope that something will occur to me before I’ve finished. But the sound bite cards are an excellent idea!

I have a few titles. usually the ones with the seedier covers.
Anyway thinking next time you are asked those questions, you need a series of sound bite cards.
Just think of the fun you could have pulling out large placards such as :
“Please clarify that.”
“tell me about yourself.”
“keep it plain and simple.”
